Don't need a holster if you never stop shooting.

1. What is your primary form of transportation - car, motorcycle, bicycle, train, bus, taxi, Uber, Lyft, walking (or other)?
Car, but I'm getting in the swing of using a bike more.

2. How many vehicles do you have?
1

3. For current vehicle owners - did you buy new, buy used, or do you lease?
Bought new.

4. What brand vehicle do you drive?
Toyota Camry

5. For owners - what was the purchase price of your vehicle, and how long have you owned it?
$22,500, I believe. I have owned it for 34 months.

6. How much do you spend annually on transportation (cab, bus, train-fare/payments/insurance/fuel)?
$1,100 on insurance, $40 a month on gas, $3600 in payments, plus $100/yr in miscellaneous public transportation = ~$5,300.

7. How much do you spend annually on maintenance for your vehicle?
Typically around or below $100 for basic upkeep.

8. How far is your commute to work?
2 miles each way. In the process of switching to biking to work, but if I know I'll be working late (happens often), I'll take my car because part of my route is in a bad area.

9. If you do not use public transportation - explain why you do not
I used to use public transportation to get to 2 out of the 3 locations where I may work on a given day, since they were very close to the stops. Now I live close enough that the gas expense costs less than a ticket and is a quicker trip to any of them. I bike to the closest one when it's practical to do so, but if I'll be moving between the offices (usually carrying a stack of 24x36 blueprints) it's much less of a headache just to take my car.

10. If you use public transportation - explain why you do not use a vehicle
I use public transportation when it would be faster, safer, or cheaper than taking my car or bike (if there is an accident or the roads are covered in ice).

I live 1 mile from a light rail station, and the light rail could get me to work in 20 minutes, AND my light rail pass would be free from work. Jumpjet, melta, jumpjet. Repeat for ten minutes or until victory is assured.
What thing I think you're missing is the size of household/number of drivers. 1 car for a single person household is very different from 1 car for a family with 2 adults and 2 teenagers, for example.

1. What is your primary form of transportation - car, motorcycle, bicycle, train, bus, taxi, Uber, Lyft, walking (or other)?

Biking for getting to/from work. Car for most other things, although I occasionally bike to the park/grocery store/church.

2. How many vehicles do you have?

1 car shared between my wife and I (we also have a toddler).

3. For current vehicle owners - did you buy new, buy used, or do you lease?

My dad gave me his old car when I was in college, and I am driving it into the ground.

4. What brand vehicle do you drive?

2002 Honda CRV.

5. For owners - what was the purchase price of your vehicle, and how long have you owned it?

Purchase price $1, have owned it for almost 7 years now.

6. How much do you spend annually on transportation (cab, bus, train-fare/payments/insurance/fuel)?

Wow, it's hard to estimate...I'm assuming you're not including airfare for trips? I'd guess between car and bikes like $3,500-4,000?

7. How much do you spend annually on maintenance for your vehicle?

On average probably like $1,000? Although this year was brutal with some repairs costing like $2,500 in a month.

8. How far is your commute to work?

8 miles.

9. If you do not use public transportation - explain why you do not

I do occasionally use Caltrain, but mostly do not because it's only marginally faster than biking in the usual case and I'm not very good at sticking to a schedule. Plus it costs more than just biking and means less exercise. Other forms of public transportation are too slow.

Car

2. How many vehicles do you have?

3. For current vehicle owners - did you buy new, buy used, or do you lease?
Bought used in 2012.

4. What brand vehicle do you drive?
2005 Toyota Prius

5. For owners - what was the purchase price of your vehicle, and how long have you owned it?
Purchased for $9,000 in 2012. Financed for 5 years @ 6.84% with a $2,000 down payment. (This is before I started learning about personal finance...). The car is now paid off and owned outright.

6. How much do you spend annually on transportation (cab, bus, train-fare/payments/insurance/fuel)?
In 2014 I spent about $5800 total. 2015 will be significantly less since I no longer have a car payment, my insurance is way cheaper, and my commute no longer has tolls. (estimate: $2500?)

7. How much do you spend annually on maintenance for your vehicle?
2014 was pretty typical, and I spent about $850 total.

8. How far is your commute to work?
17 miles each way. Depending on traffic it can take anywhere from 20-60 minutes one way. I work 10-6, so usually I avoid rush hour and can do it in ~35 minutes.

9. If you do not use public transportation - explain why you do not
The public transportation where I live is excellent, but I live in a small city on the outskirts of the metro-area (in other words, not near the hub), and I work in a suburb.

I once priced out and explored the possibility of taking public transportation, because it's technically possible to do so. It could save me a few thousand dollars a year, but my schedule would become extremely inflexible, because there's only one combination of connections in the morning and evening that would get me from work to home and back again. So I couldn't stay late at work, ever. Nor would there be any wiggle room in the morning getting in. Also, it would more than double my commute and involve 3 different buses.

The discomfort of the long commute and transfers I'd be able to put up with if it saved me a lot of money, but I don't think it would be wise (for my career) to have rigid requirements for when I have to leave work every single day.

I'd be pretty isolated without a car, living as far as I do from my friends in the area. Taking the train to see them would involve several hours, and the regional train has limited service on weekends. Now it's like 20-30 minutes driving.

Finally, I have a dog, and it's easier and cheaper to travel with him in a car, and it's good to know I can quickly and easily transport him in a pinch.

It's also much cheaper to drive to visit my family about 300 miles away (which is a trip I take several times a year) as opposed to flying, taking the train, or taking the bus.

After the analysis, I classified having a car as a need, at least for now.

1. What is your primary form of transportation - car, motorcycle, bicycle, train, bus, taxi, Uber, Lyft, walking (or other)?

Walking to and from work and around the neighborhood which is 90% of the time. Car for when we run errands outside the neighborhood.

2. How many vehicles do you have?

1 car between my wife and I.

3. For current vehicle owners - did you buy new, buy used, or do you lease?

We bought new. I worked at the dealership at the time and gave myself a really good deal on the car I sold myself.

4. What brand vehicle do you drive?

2011 Subaru Impreza.

5. For owners - what was the purchase price of your vehicle, and how long have you owned it?

~20k, 4 years.

6. How much do you spend annually on transportation (cab, bus, train-fare/payments/insurance/fuel)?

Not including car payments, maybe $1500 / year? With car payments, roughly 6000. We get gas maybe once a month for 40 bucks, insurance is 600 dollars a year, and then public transit makes up the other 500. My wife takes public transit to work.

7. How much do you spend annually on maintenance for your vehicle?

~200 dollars or so. Car only has 23k miles on it, so nothing has gone wrong with it yet.

8. How far is your commute to work?

2 miles.

9. If you do not use public transportation - explain why you do not

I like the walk to work and 2 miles isn't very far to walk.

10. If you use public transportation - explain why you do not use a vehicle

I use public transit only when it is either raining outside, or really really cold. It is faster for me to walk to work than it is to take the bus.

4. What brand vehicle do you drive?
'08 Scion xD

5. For owners - what was the purchase price of your vehicle, and how long have you owned it?

6. How much do you spend annually on transportation (cab, bus, train-fare/payments/insurance/fuel)?
$1,100

7. How much do you spend annually on maintenance for your vehicle?
<$500 including snow tires, millage might reach 36k by the end of this year

8. How far is your commute to work?
2 miles - I don't walk cause the way to work is almost completely up hill (a steep hill that sometimes makes my ears pop driving down it) and due to narcolepsy w/o cataplexy, walking like that would take 30min. and require a nap at my desk to function for my job.

9. If you do not use public transportation - explain why you do not
Bus route there would take 30 min. and it's unreliable (anywhere from 5 min. early to 15 min. late)

1. What is your primary form of transportation - car, motorcycle, bicycle, train, bus, taxi, Uber, Lyft, walking (or other)?
Bicycle/Bus/Train I take lyft occasionally too.

2. How many vehicles do you have?
1 (just the bike, though, so that's more like 0.5 of a vehicle)

3. For current vehicle owners - did you buy new, buy used, or do you lease?
used (craigslist bike)

4. What brand vehicle do you drive?
Strida

5. For owners - what was the purchase price of your vehicle, and how long have you owned it?
$450

6. How much do you spend annually on transportation (cab, bus, train-fare/payments/insurance/fuel)?
about $40/month on public transit costs, probably about the same or somewhat more per month on lyft costs. I try to minimize the amount of times I use lyft because it's a lot more expensive than the bus, but buses are obviously slow and sometimes I'm in a hurry.

7. How much do you spend annually on maintenance for your vehicle?
About 50 bucks. This year I bought a new tire and replaced the inner tubes a bunch of times at 5 bucks a pop

8. How far is your commute to work?
1.2 miles

10. If you use public transportation - explain why you do not use a vehicle
I never got around to buying a car, and now that I live in San Francisco I'd rather deal with the hassle of taking public transit everywhere than the hassle of finding a place to park everywhere

11. What country do you live in?
USA, San Francisco

12. What is your gross annual income?

I apparently spend about 1000 bucks a year on transporation not owning a car, which is a little sobering.

$18,200 - have owned it for about a year and a half.

6. How much do you spend annually on transportation (cab, bus, train-fare/payments/insurance/fuel)?

Payments are $309 a month, gas about $80-100 a month, oil changes about once every 4-6 months as I don't put a lot of miles on it...

7. How much do you spend annually on maintenance for your vehicle?

No major issues yet so nothing outside of oil changes and checkups, maybe a couple hundred a year?

There would be no reasonable way to get to my workplace or anywhere near where I live without a vehicle. I live in Minnesota, it's well worth the additional cost to save the 1.5 hours per day minimum a bus would cause me to spend commuting.

Just not this year..

1. What is your primary form of transportation - car, motorcycle, bicycle, train, bus, taxi, Uber, Lyft, walking (or other)?
Car

2. How many vehicles do you have?
1 for each myself and spouse

3. For current vehicle owners - did you buy new, buy used, or do you lease?
Used from single owners who maintained the vehicles well

4. What brand vehicle do you drive?
Dodge

5. For owners - what was the purchase price of your vehicle, and how long have you owned it?
Both vehicles were in the $10-13k range, paid in cash. Approximately 4 years each.

6. How much do you spend annually on transportation (cab, bus, train-fare/payments/insurance/fuel)?
Honestly, no idea. Too much. Probably $3000-3500, depending on the price of gas.

7. How much do you spend annually on maintenance for your vehicle?
As much as it takes - I've had almost no non-routine maintenance on either of our vehicles and they have 100k & 122k miles. I will also do any work myself, apart from things that require welding or lifting the engine. I am not equipped nor experienced for these.

8. How far is your commute to work?
20ish miles

9. If you do not use public transportation - explain why you do not
I have to get my kids after work. Also, I just looked for a bus route, and it would triple my commute time in the AM, and almost quadruple my PM commute time.

This thread has just been survey responses so far. Anybody noticed anything interesting/worthy of discussion? I noticed that a lot of the "conventional BFC wisdom" like buying used cars doesn't seem to be commonly practiced in here.

Also, lots of people being ambiguous about their income or editing it out. Are you worried your fellow goons will kidnap you for ransom? I promise I won't but can't speak for others.

Don't need a holster if you never stop shooting.

I think a lot of people buy new because a) they just don't want the headache of car maintenance and b) we have a lot of higher earners here, so they can afford it without taking on any real financial burden. There's also the fact that the buying slightly used cat is out of the bag and low mileage toyotas and hondas get snapped up at near KBB values these days, or so I hear. I bought new because I needed a car within a tight timeframe and used the time I had to negotiate a good deal rather than pray I come across a viable beater to use in DC traffic.

People are probably shy about posting their incomes because it could potentially open them up to harassment or allow people to track them down. I don't blame 'em. Wouldn't be surprised if someone who posted about their mid-6 figure salary got hit up with the occasional PM asking for a student debt bailout or somesuch.

Much like buttholes, families are meant to be tight.
One thing i've noticed is a lot of people make more than me annually yet I drive a nicer car which has made me critically think about my car leasing/purchasing decisions and I think the next time around I'm going to drive something a little more modest.

Bugamol

When I was car shopping for a 1-2 year old Honda the price difference for something with low mileage wasn't worth the "unknown" of not knowing how the previous owner drove it. It was literally only $3000-$4000 more to buy new. Personally absolutely hate and dread dealing with car maintenance, and I can afford not to.

Unless you actually enjoy working on cars I think people absolutely undervalue the time / energy / stress spent on car troubles.

From personal experience I had no troubles talking about my income to friends/family before it broke $100k. It feels like six figures + age makes people think you should just pay for everything and expect hand outs. I'm pretty generous with my family and friends because I've been very fortunate in life, but people can go from grateful/appreciative to needy/demanding in the blink of an eye when they realize how much you make.

I should also mention that I drove a hand-me-down 1991 Mazda 626 throughout all of high school, college, and starting my first job. It broke down all the time (dying at stop lights, breaking down on country roads, flaky AC, etc.) even after multiple repairs and was an absolute nightmare and I sort of promised myself that if I could reasonably afford it I wouldn't put myself through that again.

Extreme BFCers sometimes like to pretend that it's super easy to just go pick up a reliable beater car and drive it until it dies. Either those people are stupid lucky, already mechanics, friends with a mechanic, or know a local mechanic that is willing to cut them a deal and help them out.

The whole "make friends with a mechanic and they'll fix all your cars for a case of beer!" is pretty over zealous. I know a few mechanics (my Dad being one of them) and they were never super excited to work on my 626 for the 50th time.
