I've been in the DS1 and 2 threads for a while but for some reason hadn't popped in here. I finished the main game a couple months ago, and now I'm playing through again while doing co-op with a friend who hasn't sunk quite as much time into Soulsborne games as I have. I also didn't find the Old Hunters part in my first playthrough so I've been hacking at that every so often. I finally made it to (dunno what spoiler policy here is like so here goes) Ludwig the Accursed, which is on a trajectory to be my favorite boss in all of the games so far. The music is so loving good, I love the blood-soaked arena, and his moveset is really intense to play against. I'm so sure there's a second phase, but last attempt ended at juuuuust over half of his health so I probably just barely missed out on it. That sword on his back has just GOTTA get drawn. Speaking of which, this run is using Ludwig's Holy Blade, so that's a fun lore-related twist to the fight for me.

Holy gently caress, I just got to the second stage of Ludwig while co-oping with a friend. That is definitely my favorite boss fight in the series so far. It's intense, the music and transition are breathtaking, and I love the story implications. Can't wait to do the fight again solo!!!

About 20 tries into Pthu Descendant I was getting nowhere close and usually dying immediately when phase 2 started. Tried a few bouts of parrying but I've always been bad at that. Had a nice bit of patience, a fun brawl and beat him. It always seems that when I finally stop sitting back and trying to be cute I get key dodges in that let me get behind him. His sword throw always hosed me up though. His tracking is silly sometimes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k85p-p0BIxE

After 10 or so tries on his friend one floor down again I was getting absolutely nowhere due to how aggressive this guy is. Switched modes to super bumrush gently caress you and got him down in 2 more tries. The kill looking actually pretty solid. You really fight the camera more than the boss in this one. I don't know why I didn't just shoot him for the last hit. Revenge probably.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=202p-Jg-3_s

Dodging on instinct seems to help me a lot more than thinking too much about it.

Nice! I just got the Bloodletting Beast in the Lower Pthumerian chalice and he is indeed crazy aggressive. I came in thinking it'd be Cleric Beast Part 2, but he's a very different fight. Either bum-rush mode or being SUPER SUPER careful and just getting hits in the obvious openings seem to be the ways to go, but the second is boring :D

Speaking of Cleric Beast Part 2, I'm curious to fight (DLC) the fiery Cleric Beast-lookin dude in the Nightmare Grand Cathedral. I mean he wasn't hostile when I first went in but if that ain't a future boss then I don't know what is!

E: also, I wanna fight (deep chalice stuff I spoiled for myself) Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen, but good lord it seems like a loving chore just to gather the materials to create the necessary chalice dungeon.

That sounds silly and overwrought but I think its part of what the game is going for and absolutely nails. You go from weak meek vial farmer to the scariest thing in the game and it feels that way.
Especially during chalice dives.

Oh totally. The degree to which you can get immersed in the combat is amazing.

I still do little beats in my head when I learn dodge timings, though. That's just something that's ingrained in me from having played music for many years, so it still feels instinctive and not a calculation.

For vermin, just co-op with a friend forever. I've gotten several vermin doing that; you know you'll find someone to play with and if they're decent then you also gave good chances of reliably killing the boss.

Yeah, realizing that you really gotta buy vials/bullets (especially vials, but it depends on your playstyle) rather than purely relying on drops/farming makes the system way better. At this point I always have at least 50 vials floating in storage and make sure to replenish them every so often whether or not the number is dipping.

I just picked up the rifle spear for a bloodtingey run I started recently. The weapon is pretty cool - I like the range a lot, particularly the insane transformed R2 charge - but I feel like the lack of attack variety is weak against certain enemies (dodge-happy NPCs in particular), so I really wanna get another dexy/tingey weapon as an alternate. Reiterpallasch? I've never used it but it seems right up that particular alley.

I bet 90% of my time spent on my PS4 is Souls/Bloodborne. I rebought both DS2 and 3 on there when they were on sale because I'm weak and wanted to be able to play everything easily on my TV, so that pretty much locked out my thinking about playing many other games for a while.

Don't be greedy, don't panic, just whittle him down bit by bit. Once you have the rhythm down like you said it's just a matter of patience. (And endurance)

Yeah, panicking wasn't the issue, it was just that it's harder to get the timing down for the things that one-shot me since, uh, they one-shot me so I don't get another chance if I mess up.

I got lucky in the last attempt because I managed to break its leg when it was at like 10% health, so I could kill it with a Moonlight L2 and a couple R1s before it got up. As frustrating as it can be to work on a boss for a solid couple hours just because of getting one-shotted, it's awfully satisfying when you finally finish the fucker off!

One thing I found really useful was that I didn't get one-shotted by the short-range AOE it does when gets up from being staggered, so I could just go hog wild with two charged R2s while it was down and just heal up the damage I took. Totally worth the trade.
