latest updates: The End What the hell is this This is Valkyria Chronicles 2, the sequel to the tactical turn-based strategy game released back on PS3 and recently ported to the PC. Unlike the 1st game, this one was released on the PSP. Also released during the peak of "Monster Hunter" syndrome which lots and lots and lots and lots of grinding in the worst way. What's the story? As this is the sequel to VC1, you should probably watch Apepresident's LP here. Spoilers for VC1: The Imperial army and Gallia have a ceasefire after Gallia kicked their asses, only for the Queen/Archduchess to reveal she was a Darcsen all along. Also reveals the gods/religion of Valkyur was a big fat lie and Darcsens were treated like poo poo for no reason. Too bad that doesn't stop a bunch of southern racists from really not giving a drat because they hate blue-haired people that much, and started a Civil War. Which only a school academy can stop for some reason.... ...yeah. Spoiler Policy Don't spoil the plot. Does that really require more than a sentence? Style of LP Screenshot, and casual. I'm not getting any A ranks or super maxed out or whatever, we are just going to experience the game as it is. If I missed anything, probably tell me but I'm not going out of my way to reset a mission just because I didn't get a A. I'll still post artbook pages so I'm not totally lazy. Prologue The Opening https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjH8bWaEZcY I really hate openings that spoil so much. We'll get to the other options at a later point, because we're diving right into the game here. No time to waste! There's an actual difficulty setting, and I was tempted to choose Easy since this is a casual run. But I have my reasons for going Normal. And it's honestly not that hard aside from...a few missions. This is just a basic overview if you didn't play VC1 or forgot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMh88MVgQsY Valkyria Chronicles 2 takes places 2 years after the war. And for a very stupid reason, even beyond the usual reasons for war. But first, a small and peaceful town. What can I do for you? Hey, my brother Leon goes there! You'll confirm that this is your brother, then? I realize this is sudden, and it pains me to the bearer of sad tidings...But your brother, Leon Hardins, has passed away. I offer you my sincerest condolences. Hey, wait just a minute! Why is...How did he die?! All that goes on at the academy is classified for national security. I'm afraid I cannot tell you any of the details surrounding his death. That pose? You're going to see that a lot. He does that. A lot. Leon wouldn't...My brother can't be dead, man, that's crazy! He was stronger than anybody I ever- *Explosion from afar* *Machine gun fire, more explosions* That was nearby. Rebels, now?! Of all the times they could pick... Uh, is that guy on the left okay...? O-okay! Just remember what we all learned back in training and we'll be fine. Now let's go! Every mission begins with a summary of what the battle is about, Victory and Loss objectives. This mission is a failure if Avon dies, Morale is 0, or if for some godforsaken reason you don't win in 20 turns. It also gives you info on the enemies and other stuff that will be explained later. Avon has two rifle fodder with him, but they all carry the same equipment so use whoever to murder these "Rebels." Avon Hardins. There's something I'd like to go over with you. Hubert is basically giving us a tutorial. Currently we're in Command Mode, a bird's eye view of the battlefield. To go into a third-person mode where you control a character, you have to select one of your blue circles. Stars appear in the upper left, and each star represents CP (Command Points). Selecting a character uses up 1 CP, as Avon will demonstarte being chosen. Now we're in Action Mode, where moving requires the left analog stick and/or the Dpad (for walking). Camera is controlled left/right using the shoulder buttons, while going up/down is controlled by Triangle and Square respectively. The orange bar is basically your stamina for traveling. Once you run out, you can't move anymore though you can still do other actions if available. Attacking in VC2 is used with the Square Button to initiate aiming, and Cross to confirm the attack. Definitely a change that will trip up VC1 veterans. Keep in mind going to aim mode stops the enemy from firing, so one trick is to just mash the Square button once you enter Action Mode if an enemy is nearby to prevent them from getting off a shot. Can save you lots of residual health over time. Normally I would try and hide to creep up an enemy to reduce damage, but enemies here barely scratch Avon's health bar. So I just run right up to an enemy's head for the killshot. There's basically no reason not to hit the head whenever possible, as it deals almost twice the damage of a body shot. It's also worthwhile to get as close as possible because the orange reticule is the range of the bullets. The closer you are, the less variance the bullets will fly off other than the enemy's head. Once you're done with a character's turn, press Start to go back to Command Mode. Keep in mind that the enemy will stop firing once you exit out of Action Mode, so theoretically you can camp right next to an enemy, spam Aim mode and exit out before the enemy fires a shot. Useful for close range fighters to get hits in without dying. Now this is still my first turn, so Avon is just going to mosey down to the next guy with my remaining AP. This is important to do because picking a character again in the same Command turn gives them AP fatique, which means Avon would start regardless with less AP next time I choose him this turn. By the way, I got shot like 8 times. Look at Avon's health. He is bulletproof. Sandbags and general places where you can crouch via Circle button are incredibly important. Being in a crouched position gives a huge defensive bonus. Shots to the head that would overkill by 2 bullets would barely do half to a crouching enemy. But right now, they're not needed. Obviously killed that soldier, but extra shots managed to reach the other one. More of a happy accident, because most of the time it won't happen and the effort to set up double kills isn't worth it. This is Avon after being selected 3 times. His AP is way down, which is how the game encourages you to use up quantity over quality. Avon easily destroyed these 3 Rebels, but on a different map with more enemies, I would use the Rifle fodder to travel farther on the other side since he's fresh on AP. All right! We sent them packing! We did it, team. Team work, team work After each mission, you're ranked based on how fast you finished the mission. Considering the turn limit, Avon basically hugging the Rebels with bullets was the only way to guarantee the best rank. After the battle A fine bit of leadership. gathering those men in the face of a surprise attack. Apparently it's a family trait. Hey. You really won't tell me how my brother died? That is correct. It's classified information, I'm afraid. I guess that ends our conversation. What? You want to enroll? Leon can't be dead. My brother just wouldn't so down that easy. Period. I must beg to differ. This certificate of death indicates that he-- *rips paper in half* I'm telling you I don't buy it. Not until I see proof with my own eyes! I don't think that's how death works, Avon.... Hmm. Then I suppose you'll be needing this. An application for new enrollment at Lanseal. I have to apply?! Come on, you said you're a teacher! Avon, that's not how schools work.... As a non-scouted applicant you'll face stricter standards for acceptance. If you still wish to apply. I won't stop you. All are at liberty to try. But if you think just anyone can get in. well... You'll learn soon enough. Um.... Now, if you'll excuse me. Perhaps we'll meet again. Good day. *walks away* If Gallia's ever gonna be at peace again, guys like us have to fight for it. Application for student enrollment? Fine, I'll pass your stupid test. I'm not sure what Avon is trying to say. Is he trying to cut a promo to call out on Death? End Prologue https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1JfdP8SxVE Still reeling from the recent invasion, Gallia now faces new troubles from within. This is basically Abraham Lincoln revealing he was British AND black AND Indian. Somehow. United by their hatred of the Darcsens, a group of nobles forms the Gallian Revolutionary Army. So despite being told that their entire reason for hating Darcsens was completely false, they just really hate blue hair it turns out. Look at that fucker with the twin drills. We're gonna get goofy rear end boss fights in this game. The SOUTH, eh? Late title card, right on cue.

This game. One the one hand, it is painfully more generic than the first game, and the release on psp basically killed the series in the U.S. On the other hand one of the characters ended up becoming one of my favorite characters in a video game, possibly one of my favorite characters, period. So I have very conflicting emotions with this game.

I am so happy that somebody is trying this again. The plot may be as anime as possible, but they put a lot of effort into fleshing out the characters, so that they were not the one dimensional stereotypes from the first game.

No part of this game is without flaw, but I maintain that it's the best implementation of classes in the trilogy. Developing your animes into different specializations is fun and meaningful, and it manages a kind of balance where half a dozen classes are incredibly overpowered instead of just one or two. Of course, they manage to ruin even this with the insane grind for promotion certificates and stuff.

January-Entrance Exam Your school--the Lanseal Royal Military Academy! Oof, it sure was a haul, though. My butt's still numb from the train ride. Man, is this place big! How many students does a school like this have? It's pretty cool to see it for myself after hearing all about it from you. Leon.... They said I need to change into uniform and get to the classroom. Here goes! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWTlLUCBY3c The oldest and most prestigious martial institution in all of Gallia. Victory through diligence; peace through strength. Why yes, that is a tank doing exercise. Even gears need a workout, apparently. So outside of missions, gameplay is basically moving around the academy. Double explanation marks is mandatory story stuff, and it's the only available option right now. But what kind of school makes you wear a uniform just to get on campus? I know Leon said access was restricted when I asked if I could visit. National security and blah blah blah, outsiders arrested on sight. Brutal! Well. that’s the military for you. At least I got this loaner for the exams. First up's the written test. Ugh. brain work was never my forte... Oh we're doing this, are we. Hmmm...No, no...Aha! Perfect. "Your greatest adversary lies within. Wage war with the weakness in yourself." Daaaang! That's so true. bro. You always had the best quotes! *Later that day* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFSLj3orF4Y Nope, all yours. Thanks a lot! *takes the seat* Oh, uh hi! My name's Cosette, Avan. It's really nice to meet you. And thanks for the seat! Hey, anytime! *Cough heard* Why can't people wear glasses just to wear them.... Ooh, right. Sorry. I'll be super quiet. Huuup... What is Cosette doing? Is she...laughing? Supportive? Look. I came here because I was scouted. Thanks, but I don't need support from some starry-eyed applicant. Oh poo poo, the red thingie is out! Ngh! Nnnnnnnnnnngh! C-Cosette? Are you okay? Hey, what's wrong?! BWAAAH! Huff...pant... I...what Wha--? How did that seem like a good idea to you?! Even Avan doesn't know what the gently caress. Ugh. it's like a train wreck. I don't want to stare. but-- So VC2 does active portrait moving since they can't fit in actual character models to interact. Avan's picture bumps into Zeri to indicate pushing I think. Whoah...uh, keep your kinks to yourself there Hmph. Jerk. L-Let's just all get through this, yeah? Good luck, guys! Hm... The test will begin now. I'll begin by passing out your question booklets. *Time passes and the school bell rings* Pencils down! I'll collect your response sheets now. Next up is the field exam. Dress for combat report to the drill ground. Bleagh. I managed to get to all the questions, but I was mostly guessing. I mean, I know they did the whole dumb anime trope of "I have a superpower that can solve all these problems but I won't because it's some kind of existential self-betrayal", but uh, there's an ethnic cleansing going on. This game broke me. No, it was not the anime ww2 high-school, I'm fairly resilient to (even if Avan and Cosette could use a brain). The grind. Oh god the grind. The unit with horribly overpowered potentials and stats finally joined the group. Then I realized I'd have to grind said unit up . When broken god-units elicit such a response, you know something in the gameplay is messed up. Godspeed, and may the RNG god give you the right certificates in a timely manner.

You know, when I waiting for this game I was excited to play it since I love the first game and didn't mind the school setting since it's japan and am used to it by then. But man the game was disappointing and for the fact it killed any chance of the 3rd game ever coming out (They would have even made it a digital release but now the lack of sales of 2 killed any chance of it ever coming out). At least the 3rd got fan translated and the art book came out officially in english which I got (I got all three games artbooks) which is something at least, anyway time to relive this game again.Francis posted:Valkyria Chronicles is anime garbage through and through. It outsold both VC1 and VC2, and was so popular it re-released with so much extra content it was basically an extra game. Sadly the translation only covered the main story but way better than nothing. VC1 was not popular at all in Japan, and VC2 was a response to the anime of VC1 being popular. When VC2 tanked as well, VC3 was the swan song of putting everything out there like Front Mission 5 and Fire Emblem Awakening was.

For most people, its easier to approach a character that isn't hyper intelligent so they make the main character average. Bad writers take this to an extreme where the main character is borderline retarded. But hey, if Avan can pass the test to get into a military academy he can't be that dumb...right?
