My kids watched the original "101 Dalmatians" on Disney Plus to tonight. It's not the first time, plus I watched it a lot as a kid on VHS (dating myself there).

I'm embarrassed to admit that JUST TONIGHT I realized that "Cruella DeVil" was a play on "Cruel Devil."

In the book there’s actually a Mr DeVil, Cruella’s husband, but they’re still able to get away with the whole nominative determinism angle by explaining that her husband is so harried by his dominant spouse that he took her last name upon marriage. Feminist icon!

I've never seen it, but I didn't learn until maybe early 2000s that it's not some fantastical tale about a dog who has 101 puppies and that's why Cruella wants them, as if 101 from one litter would make a better coat

The 'main' dog couple only had 15 puppies (granted, still like 3 times bigger than a regular dog litter) and Cruella already had 84 other dalmatian puppies ready to go.

Edit: And according to the wiki plot summary, even though she looks like she's loving 80, Cruella is actually the same age, or close to it since they were classmates, as the love interest, Anita, who seems late 20s/early 30s.

There's a sequel where all the humans fall into comas and they have to go to Downing Street to ask the Prime Minister's dog what's going on. Turns out aliens from Sirius, the Dog Star, have arrived to give all the dogs a lift off the planet before humans start nuclear war.

And I am astounded that Disney didn't draw on this at all for the awful sequel to the live action remake (which was also bad because the dogs didn't talk).

15 isn't that far out of the norm for dalmatians. My mom's dalmatian had 25 between 2 litters.

Playing through Ghost of Tsushima today, I learned from the resource collection menu that a "bowyer" is an actual thing: someone who crafts shooting bows.

Somehow I never consciously ran across this word outside of the badguy in Mario RPG, I've spent a majority of my life vaguely thinking his name was some sort of inexplicably poorly-translated pun on Bowser

The Aristocats is based on a previous story, but a previous story written by Disney employees to turn into animation by Disney. It's just that it was developed for something else and made into a proper full Disney release instead. It's the only original Disney full movie until the 90s where you get a run of stuff based on real people but not any specific books about them.

Dinosaur is the first completely made up by Disney story I think?

Actually I'm pretty sure The Aristocats is based off of a spoken word original draft, but Disney took quite a few editorial liberties to make the "G" rating.
