It says "Final" right in the title. THAT'S why he's the fastest in that one. (and that's really not a joke actually, he's slimmer and a lot faster in it. And there's a crapton of fighting scenes, just mostly not featuring him.)

If you happen to have a way of being in the U.S. and want to get into the spirit, Crackle has a few Godzilla films to stream (2000, v. Mechagodzilla 1&2, v. King Ghidorah, v. Mothra and v. Destoroyah, at least, their site is slightly horrible when it comes to browsing movies) with decent subtitles. There are midroll ads, but they aren't too frequent and are usually short-ish. If you have money to burn, iTunes and Google Play have most of the films for digital rental, but they are dubs, which might be a either a pro or a con depending on your preference.

Well I guess if the thread's becoming all informative how about three videos about a bunch of Japanese dudes and a Godzilla suit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Tul6rrrFY0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkTVjCDMb-c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvR9ZQsOeJg Now I don't know if these guys are putting on some official Godzilla suit (the one they're using looks pretty sweet) or it's a hobby project but I think it's pretty neat, especially the first vid since it shows how much of a group effort it is to put on the suit. EDIT: Actually while I'm at it how about these Making Of videos that I found in the related videos, unfortunately these are also in Japanese without English captions but are still pretty cool looking (there's a few bloopers too): Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla(1994) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUr19d2M-c8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbdtBy95Zwk FlapWrap fucked around with this message at 18:38 on Apr 12, 2015 |

kalonZombie posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1GoxU3Q2ro I remember first coming across this. It was a subtle nod to the fact that that year (2004) was the first time the original Japanese version of the first film was being released to American audiences for Big G's 50th birthday. Up until that point only the American edit was available, which drastically alters the story to tone down the anti-nuke message, and inserts Raymond Burr as an American reporter viewing all the events, sometimes even superimposing him into scenes, redubbed so that he seems part of everything! In the film that launched the Heisei era of Godzilla 30 years later (later released as "Godzilla: 1985" in the US), the American distributors went back to the same well and got Raymond Burr again for re-editing shenanigans! This time they considerably downplayed the subplot that Japan was a helpless pawn in the US and USSR's cold war meddling, and instead actively villainized the Soviet side of things. Also, it's painfully obvious that Dr. Pepper is one of the main money people in the US cut, due to their awkward product placements.

And not like "the movie the game" sort of thing it's really as in "play as three different eras of Godzilla INCLUDING THE NEW AMERICAN ONE WHO IS "

Yeah, the Final Wars jab is pretty great. There's a ton of Kaiju in it, but only Zilla ("They took the God out of Godzilla"-Actual Toho Quote) is CG, and the rest are suit costumes*. Also, in Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, a couple movies before that, there's some pretty pointed side jabs as well. The beginning has soldiers getting a briefing on giant monsters, and mention of Godzilla leads two dudes in the back to gossip "Didn't Godzilla also attack New York a few years back?" "No, they say that's a different, smaller monster, but the Americans thought that's who it was." Also, in that set of films, a giant turtle monster gets washed ashore, dead and beached, and there's comments about it being the sort of thing that Godzilla might eat, which I can't possibly imagine what they're alluding to. *This is a half truth at best.

Twisted Kaiju Theater seemed so funny back in 2001. Also, there's only two kinds of candy that come with Godzilla figures for no real reason--those little lemon sours you saw there, and these bigger ones that pretty much are just a Tums wrapped individually. I have no idea why there'd always be one of those in the box with the godzilla toy, but there was.

I The first film's anti-nuke message is really complicated. Like, nuclear testing awakens Godzilla, and is bad. And the attack on Tokyo calls back to Hiroshima. But at the same time, the film portrays the invention and use of a new weapon even deadlier than a nuke as heroic. But, further going into "complicated", it ends with him destroying all his notes and committing suicide so that no-one else can use it. If I had to nail things down, I'd say that the film is less opposed to the initial use of nuclear weapons in wartime than it is to the continuous testing of new weapons. Which is really interesting from a Japanese director.

While much about the mythos behind Godzilla is up for debate (for example, the long standing line from Toho that they named ol' Gorilla-Whale after a nickname a fat employee-who has never been named seems far less likely than it being carefully selected by a boardroom of producers) the anti-nuke message is definitely not ambiguous in the film. It IS interesting that they take the stance that science marches ever on, and it's the responsibility of the inventors to keep weapons of mass destruction out of the hands of those who would actually use them, images such as the rows of radiation-damaged victims of the monster, or the very obvious parallels to the Lucky Dragon No. 5 incident that happened that very year are about as heavy handed a message as you can get. The original film is very much a deep look at the post-WWII society Japan had become, as well as echoes of the previous generation of culture as well. Don't get me wrong, I love the standard it became of dudes in monster suits wrestling, but the original is a very sobering sociological message movie, and shouldn't be ignored as such.

This might be a good place for this, I suppose. When I was a kid I distinctly remember playing a Kaiju-style monster game, on either the Sega Genesis or the NES. Unlike every other Godzilla or similar game I have been able to find on the net, it wasn't a side-scrolling beat-em-up, it was played at 3/4s angle as your giant monster stomped all over a city, getting slammed into buildings, throwing parts of buildings, bridges, trains, etc. I have no idea what the game was called or which system it was for, other than the fact that I know I had only those two systems at the time and it was available for rental in Iowa in the mid-nineties. If you've ever played it and remember the name, pass it on please. I'd love to play it again.
