HELL SERPENT
Lipstick Apathy
Our story begins at the corner booth of the Cracked Pot, a run-down tavern more known for its watered down drinks than anything else. Cardomir, your local fence, hurriedly ushers you into the cramped seats:

Melinda Brewer, played by DivineCoffeeBinge
Greg "The QM" Charlton, played by Redeye Flight
Gregory Rowantree, played by FewtureMD
Varakyn Wraithtouch, played by Comrade Gorbash
Cole, played by Josef bugman

He lays out a hastily scribbled map, with a house on the corner of Treadmoor Alley and Warehouse Walk marked in pig gristle. Looks like Card had an early dinner.

"This here's the home of Lestor Bestoc; you know 'em, local merchant, likes to collect antiques. I hear he's just 'ad another shipment come in this week, and the stuff's bound to be in there tonight ..."

Everyone leans in just a little bit closer as Card lays out of the details. The off-key singing of the drunken patrons drowns out your hushed whispers as you begin discussing the deal. Perhaps not the most valuable of scores, but everyone needs to start somewhere, and you all especially need the money right now.

Okay, to begin our first score, I'll need some details about the house:

Varakyn, what's the one thing about the Bestoc house that makes it especially vulnerable to a heist tonight?
Melinda, what's the valuable item in the house that the crew will want to make off with?
QM, what did Cardomir tell you to avoid during the job?
Cole, how will the crew get in? What's the approach?
Gregory, how will the crew get out?

And finally, who will initially be taking point?

Feel free to discuss among yourselves, but remember that all the actual planning is supposed to be abstracted down to single short statements. I will be aiming for updates every 24-48 hours, or oftener as long as people keep posting.

"Bestoc's a slimy one, from what I hear," Melinda notes. Her fine silks are not on display tonight; it would make her stand out, and standing out isn't her job during this phase of the operation. That'll come later. Long hair, bleached near-white after many dye jobs and changes, is pulled back in a stark ponytail as she sits back in her chair. "He likes to pay for companionship with coin, and he's had to pay off more'n a couple of madams once it turned out he sent them back overly damaged. It'll be a pleasure poking 'im in the eye."

I'm waiting until we learn what our approach is before making my point man suggestion, but the single most valuable item, the one we really, really want, is a bust of a long-dead Akarosi nobleman. It's rumored that a local underworld higher-up is looking to acquire it in order to somehow 'prove' his rather dubious claims of noble descent (reportedly the noble bloodline had a distinctive nose...).

Greg swirls the brandy in his glass, focusing on the map. "Ahh, Bestoc. Better to drown in the sea than take his hand in rescue. Slimy, sure, but he hasn't pissed all his coin away on company and furnishings." He takes a long draw of the brandy. "Man's paranoid. Convinced the Lampblacks are out to get him. Step the wrong way inside that house and the whole thing'll go up like a bomb."

gradenko_2000 posted:

Bestoc's house is festooned with traps and alarms, both mechanical and magical, but in particular the ground floor exterior is a hornet's nest. Crack the wrong window and you'll get shot from two concealed crossbows while an alarm wakes half the neighborhood.

Should we get an IRC channel, for discussing like this?

"Slimy is good, I think this may give us an edge." Cole leans forward the long hood obscuring any physical signs other than the slight tenting of the fingers. "Nothing wrong with paying for companionship, but it sounds as if he may be both paranoid and slimy. A somewhat deadly combination". Cole moved slightly to look at Melinda and, appraising her, turned back to everyone else and said "I think I have a plan though".

"I recommend we set up our erstwhile artiste with a particularly obvious conquest, to deceive her way in", winking before gently elbowing Melinda "Then the rest of us start infiltrating the place, doing our best to keep quiet, take some valuable objects that he won't miss as well as the bust". A slight drumming of the fingers was the only sign of nerves "The only problem is if he is as foul tempered in the bedroom as you say. I'd sooner not see you hurt Melinda."

Using a Deception plan to give us initial access and provide a distraction for our mark and Infiltration Plan to ensure that we can get in and out as quickly as possible, preferrably without setting off any alarms. That is okay right?

I just wanted to talk through this to see if I've got a clear idea on the (beginnings of the) plan and the game mechanics.

If I'm understanding right, we're looking at Melinda taking point to get inside with a Deception plan. Ideally I'd like to take some time and check in with Melinda's friend Nyryx to get an idea for the kind of girl that Lestor favors; then she can use her Fine Disguise Kit to match his (ahem) specifications. I'm betting he's not got a thing for higher-class ladies, and even if he does I don't know if you can get a +1d bonus for more than one Fine item at once, so her Fine Clothes probably aren't going to factor in. Now, if Cole or Gregory are game - either could work depending on the angle we take with them - I'd like one of them to play a supporting role in this particular deception (an escort, if you will, supposedly hired to ensure that Lestor doesn't treat her too roughly) for an additional bonus... if one of 'em is willing to take the Stress for an Assist action.

So that's 2 dice for Melinda's Consort, +1d for her disguise kit, +1d for an Assist, for a total of 4 dice, used in a Controlled action. Success gets us a way in, and while Melinda is keeping Lester's attention, whoever's assisting her does a quick look around to spot a good entry method and double-check that our previous planning seems to be accurate.

Then I hand Point off to whoever's outside and leading the Infiltration group, who slips inside (possibly with another Assist bonus from whoever Assisted Melinda... if, again, they're up for the Stress) and opens the way for the others. Then we're all inside, and that's step one complete.

Have I got all that right?

Fine items give you an extra die on your Effect roll, not your Action roll, so your attempt to deceive your way in would be 2d because of your Action dots, +1d since you're a Con-Man so this is definitely in your background's wheelhouse, and another +1d if someone will provide you Backup. Under a Controlled situation, since you're working off of a plan.

You would then also roll for Effect - let's call it Will out of "How thorough is your influence over someone else?"

You'd roll 2d because of your Effect diamonds in Will, +1d because of your Fine Disguise Kit, and that would determine how long Mr. Bestoc is distracted, how freely you can walk around in the house, etc.

And then yes if the rest of the crew is still outside, then they'd also have to get in, but most likely with a bonus from what you (and/or your escort) do while they're inside.

As an aside, could you guys please edit the posts I linked to in the OP to have the character bios in them too?

Finally, I don't know how often I can be on IRC, but ok let's try: #bladegoons on synIRC

The street should be quiet, and all the bluecoats will be uptown, making sure none of the high and mighty have to lay eyes on a dirty beggar. And when the moon goes black, darkness will be our ally."

She pulls at the elbow length gloves she's wearing, hiding her distinctive left hand. They'll be off when the time for the job comes. "We can always set a fire. Give Melinda a reason to depart. Make it harder to tell what was taken."

Sorry for the delay. Trying to get a feel for how the game works.

Need I remind you of what happened on our last job, when you set a fuse in an entire barrel of gunpowder to make our escape route!? I'm still not sure how we made it alive out of that, and my stock of burn salve is dangerously low, so let's be a touch more careful this time, eh?"

So that's Melinda working her way in with a Deception plan. We've all agreed that it's a Deceive action in a Controlled situation, that Melinda gets 1 additional die from a matching Background, and another die from Greg serving as Backup (and Greg will take 1 Stress for it).

For brevity's sake, make your Effect roll at the same time, with 1 additional die for having a Fine item to aid you in your deception.

What'll happen next is that the result of the Action and Effect roll will determine how deep Melinda and Greg can work their way in, and how they can help Varakyn, Dr Rowantree and Cole with their Infiltration plan to get past the ground floor's security measures. That Infiltration plan is still missing its detail: "what is the entry point?", although I would expect that that's part of what Melinda and Greg will be finding out once they get inside.

Melinda

At the appointed time, Melinda sets her part of the plan into action. Having acquired information about Lestor's preferences, she's dyed her hair copper-red and done herself up with an overabundance of makeup; the effect is less 'classy lady' and more 'trashy lady trying to pretend to be classy.' Which, of course, is just what she's told the situation calls for.

Arrangements having been made, she meets up with Greg and heads to Lestor's home, telling the heavy at the entrance that "Oh, Maestro Helleren sent me, dear. I think he wants to butter your employer up to get a better price on some merchandise, if you know what I mean. Hmm? Oh, he's with me, sweet thing; here to make sure I come back to my own employer undamaged, don't you know..."

Deception Plan: 4#1d6 4 3 1 2

Oof. Not as nice a roll as I was hoping for. I could proceed and drop a level in the Effect roll, but instead...

The guard looks less than convinced, maybe even a little suspicious, and so Melinda draws a deep breath - both to steady her nerves and to (ahem) display herself a little more clearly to the guard. "Oh, don't be like that, handsome. Maybe once the boss is through, I could maybe spend a bit of time with you, too, hmmm?"

At a success level of 4-5 on a Controlled position's Action roll, I can proceed with reduced effect or I can open myself up to greater danger and take a Risky roll instead, which is what I'm doing here. I suggest 'the guard decides not to wait and drags Melinda off for some abuse' for the added danger. Because what's life as a thieving con-artist guttersnipe without some risk, eh?

Deception Plan, Risky: 4#1d6 6 2 4 3

That's more like it! Success and avoidance of the danger. I could choose to overreach and get bonus Effect plus the danger, but no, that would be silly of me.

Deception Plan Effect: 3#1d6 6 5 1

6! That's 4 segments of success, which ain't too shabby at all. If I had any Stress I could angle for erasing one thanks to my Slide talent, but that's moot at the moment. I think that's worth a tick on Playbook Advancement for a Slide, too, but it's early yet for that. So! Let's see how far into the compound Greg and I can get, shall we? And let this be a lesson to you - never underestimate the power of corsetry to distract the average thug.

edit: Having just taken an action on Point, I believe I'm now unable to remain on Point; depending on the situation we find ourselves in, I suspect it'll be up to Greg to mark and possibly open the new entry point for the rest of the team while Melinda Assists (I'll take that Stress) by distracting all the guards - though depending on our situation it might be a matter of one of them taking point for the entry. It was a nice success, after all. I was hoping for a crit on the Controlled roll so I could create a new opportunity (i.e. "hey guys we opened a window for you" or what have you), but alas, 'twas not to be.

Just something to keep in mind for the next time, but you're not supposed to roll the same Action twice to get past the same danger. Command, Slip or Sway may have been appropriate alternative approaches if the initial Deceive did not work, or as first actions before using Deceive.

The guard lets the pair in, with Greg one step behind. The guard does not follow and stays outside. What they find in the living room is not so much an opulent house, so much as what a house might look like if someone was trying very hard to look opulent.

Melinda works her charms on Bestoc, whose hands begin to wander almost immediately. The good news is that he's well distracted enough that Greg has a fairly wide berth on moving about the house without attracting attention, and there does not seem to be anyone else in immediate eyesight.

From the living room Greg can see stairs leading up, the dining room, what looks like the wet kitchen and maid quarters, a side entrance, and a hallway leading further in.

Greg, you're on point now. Melinda's Deception worked well enough to completely disarm any suspicion of the guard or of Bestoc. You have some idea of what the exterior's security measures are like, based on what you've told me. How do you plan on letting the others in? You can ask me a question for additional information, if you'd like.

Mea culpa! Though, truth be told, you can make a pretty good case that the Risky move was more Consort than Deceive, as she was acting friendly to the guard instead of just straight lying. Which would have given me the same dice pool, so all's good. Phew! Still, I'll remember that next time, thank you.

It's an odd feeling; with Melinda leading the merchant off, he finds himself alone on the right side of the most dangerous walls this side of Whitecrown. Typecast as dumb muscle, the help gives him about as much attention as they might the statuary; after all, it's their job to be... invisible...

Greg focuses on one of them, heading upstairs with what looks like gardening tools in her hands. Where's she going?

I'd like to Stalk the maid upstairs; there might be a balcony, or a conveniently placed trellis near a window, any of which would be less lightly guarded and warded than the lower entries.

Alternately, we could do a teamwork action, and Melinda could consort with the guy in order to set up an act of violence so that Varakyn can murder him; then, as I understand it, the effect dice of my action get added to your effect dice for actually knocking the guy out (I suggest knocking him out, it's less messy). I think the first one, putting him to sleep, covers our tracks better, and I'll gladly donate the stress to help out. If that goes wrong we can still jump him, whereas if jumping him goes bad we have fewer fall backs.

If you're solid with that, I'm totally fine with you indicating what sort of sound or whatnot Varakyn makes for your distraction.

Spider-Man's Amazing Construction Company
Melinda

Smiling and laughing, Melinda lets Lestor 'charm' her, sipping wine and fending off the occasional grope with murmurs about how good things come to those who wait... all the while waiting for Varakyn to arrive. She's had about enough of this pig. Once the Stranger arrives, Melinda maneuvers him into position so that his back is to the Cutter...

...there's a soft 'thump' as a vase falls from a nearby end table onto the carpet, knocked over by a small pebble thrown by the Stranger, so that when Lestor whirls at the sound - which of course he does - he's still not looking in her direction. As the dealer rushes over to retrieve the expensive-looking-but-actually-cheap-knockoff, muttering, Melinda moves to slip some Trance Powder into his wine...

I'm assuming a die from Melinda's Background, as well as her 1 dot of skill and one for Varakyn's assist...

Slip (Controlled): 3#1d6 1 2 3

...motherfucker.

...but pauses as she spots a fairly sizable cache of Trance Powder sitting by Lestor's bedside. He must, it seems, be a regular user of the stuff - and if he is, then the relatively small dose of powder that Melinda's brought with her isn't going to be enough to put the guy out. Shooting a glance at Varakyn, Melinda shakes her head almost imperceptibly, visibly re-pocketing her dose of powder before moving to Lestor's side. "Oh, honey, put the pottery down and let's go to bed. You have been patient, after all..."

I am abandoning this course of action and backing out of it instead of escalating to Risky; by keeping Lestor's attention on Melinda I'm hoping to (and am willing to) Assist Varakyn on any action she decides to opt for. Uncool, Orokos, uncool.

Uh-oh! Okay, so I think Varakyn is going to jump him while Melinda has his attention.

With her assist and my Murder 1 and assuming I get the matching Background die, I'd be rolling 3 on what is probably a Risky position. I could get to 4 with a Devil's Bargain - say a stress for scuffling with him , or leaving evidence behind?

So it comes down to whether that extra die is worth the bargain...

Varakyn, you are definitely taking a "calculated risk". You can get extra dice from Melinda's assist (everyone, make sure you're tracking your stress points!) and from the Devil's Bargain - he'll definitely remember being knocked out and stiffed on his entertainment for the night no matter what happens.

General principle behind PbPs is to :justpost:, especially in a game like this where there's no set initiative order

Varakyn

Varakyn tenses in the darkness as Melinda leads the mark past her hiding place. Something most have gone wrong with drugging him. She carefully slides her sword, blade blackened with grease so it won't reflect, out of the harness on her back, muscles taut as she waits for the right moment...

The Stranger explodes out of the shadows without warning, bringing the pommel of her weapon down hard on the soft spot behind the man's ear, as her left hand whips around to pull him into a choke hold. She tightens her grip and holds it until she's sure he isn't struggling. Not enough to kill him, just incapacitate him.

Let's get our Murder on then. Managed a 6! I'll avoid the danger.
Murder (Risky) + Devil's Bargain + Assist: 4#1d6 4 6 3 1

I have to admit to not being entirely clear on how Effect rolls work in this case.
