I've noticed occasional weirdness with the sleep tracking, but it seems like it has been getting better over time (and also since I tightened the strap a little.) I cross-reference my Fitbit sleep with my CPAP machine report and it usually makes sense. The CPAP screws up occasionally, too, so it's nice having two data points to compare.

I just cannot accept or get over how awful the Fitbit app is. It doesn't even have a dark mode.

Sleep tracking with my Pixel Watch 3 had been functioning without issues aside from it jumping the gun every once and awhile on when I actually go to bed. At least you can adjust sleep times after the fact unlike Samsung.

Same here, PW3 sleep tracking seems fine the few times I've checked in detail.

The recent problems I'm seeing with the PW3 are all mentioned in this list of issues introduced in the recent Wear OS 5.1 update: https://9to5google.com/2025/03/24/wear-os-5-1-update-causing-delayed-notifications-and-other-bugs/

Seeing both the delayed notifications - once by an hour+ - and the touch screen freezes. I have had to press the crown to unfreeze the screen quite a few times - and it doesn't go back to home screen when I do this, just unfreezes and brightens whatever frozen screen I'm on.

quote:

Delayed notifications appear to be one the most common bugs affecting the Wear OS 5.1 update right now, but other issues appear to be sporadic, like watch face editing causing crashes, Fitbit syncing not being up to speed, and touch screen freezes.

I'm looking for a device to monitor my dad's vitals (lol). He had a heart attack recently and he lives on his own. There are times when we aren't able to be there to keep an eye on him.
I don't want a smartwatch - just something super unobtrusive and lightweight that he can wear which will feed back to his iPhone and which will alert the emergency services (and us) if it picks up a problem. I don't know much at all about wearables but I'm assuming this is a thing?

I looked at an Oura ring, but a couple of my friends have them and they are kind of massive especially for an old person's finger.

I'm looking at the Polar H10. Seems like pretty much the simplest thing you can get which might do the job. Anyone know about Polar products in general or this one specifically?

This is a really sparse field with non-medial device wearables. Most only offer fall detection to alert emergency services. The Pixel Watch 3 just got FDA approval for loss of pulse detection. That won't work on iPhone obviously.

Polar H10 is just a workout ECG chest strap. You could use it to record heart rate continuously, but that's about it.

Understand that you cannot detect a heart attack with anything other than a 12 lead ECG who's results are interpreted by a qualified doctor. The best a consumer level device can do is afib detection and none, that I know if, alert emergency services.

If he has an iPhone you might want to look at Apple Watches. I've thought about getting my dad a WearOS watch to go with the Pixel phone I got him for fall detection and to ensure he has a way to call even if he can't reach a phone.

Alternatively maybe look at devices intended for kids that have baked in parental controls that might let you accomplish some level of tracking. Really, though, I suspect when you start looking at devices to accomplish this that the costs start getting to a point where a smartwatch seeing very light or no use as a smartwatch is still more cost effective than a more limited device.

The 7 series got a MAJOR SoC upgrade so it's one of the snappiest watches out there now.

That said, while I like the chunkiness of the ultra, it really doesn't DO anything better than the competitors out there. It's hard not to recommend a OnePlus Watch 3 and be done with it (or a Pixel Watch if you need something smaller.)

I dont know whats going on but it seems like my galaxy watch 7 is using up more energy when I turn on an exercise mode and turn it off afterwards. Battery usage is normal if I restart, but if I dont it'll burn through 50% of the battery overnight.

Getting annoyed that Google provides no way of forcing my watch to check for system updates, particularly since it teased me that an update was available and would install once my watch was on a charger, but I was getting ready for work and couldn't do it at the time. That was Thursday, and since then no more notifications to update, and I'm stuck on Wear OS 5.0 when I know that 5.1 has been released for my watch (Pixel Watch 2 LTE). The only workarounds I've found searching on the issue no longer appear to work, and just led to me tapping my watch for minutes at a time like I was stuttering in Morse code.

v1ld
Apr 16, 2012

Yeah, that is annoying.

For this particular update though, I'm on the opposite side of you: unhappy I can't roll back to 5.0 given how often the watch can seemingly freeze, drop or even queue inputs to suddenly react to a few simultaneously. To say nothing of a bunch of other issues. It's day and night how I went from happy with the watch to being annoyed with it.

5.1 needed way more testing before release. I'm on a PW3, their most current hardware, and it's been having issues from day 1 of the update. How did they not notice? WTF Google.

Can't say I've noticed any behavior change at all with 5.1 for my Pixel Watch 3.

v1ld
Apr 16, 2012

I get freezes/lockouts in the UI once every couple days maybe less, but they're annoying when they happen. Most often happens when closing out a workout and waiting on the summary but have seen it elsewhere.

The worst was when the watch was unresponsive to even crown presses for 5-10 seconds.

Most often giving up on tapping, sliding on the screen and pressing the crown will unfreeze the display and then let you go back to the tap or slide you wanted.

Never happened pre 5.1. There are other reports of people experiencing similar problems with 5.1.

v1ld
Apr 16, 2012

At least some of those UI freezes seem related to tilt-to-display when the watch UI is waiting on an update.

This morning I had a UI freeze when I ended the workout on the watch, then reached for the keys in my pocket and then went back to the watch display to see the summary. The intervening tilt-off and then tilt-on motions had thoroughly confused the UI so the display turns back on but is now utterly unresponsive to all actions until the crown is pressed. At which point it doesn't do the usual crown action but instead just unlocks the display and makes it respond again.

None of this happened with 5.0. I had the same behaviors back then and stuff just worked.

I've also had PW3 UI freezes and unresponsiveness, in the same areas - tilt-to-wake, and during workouts. It's all very very annoying. And Garmin isn't any better these days, with constant UI bugs, the occasional freeze, and now adding a subscription. There are no good smartwatches out there!

I put an (official google) band on my pixel watch and I think it's broken or something to the point where I can't remove the one side of the band anymore. Like the locking mechanism that connects to the watch can slide back and forth in the slot and it doesn't feel like it's going to disconnect, but I can push the release button and slide it over and it just doesn't come off. Not sure if I'm just doing something wrong but it sure feels like it's stuck on there.

I found the band-release method super fucky when I put the official leather band on my Pixel Watch 2, and am glad that now I have normal grommets. That said, are you sure it's actually fully seated in the watch? It sounds like you're describing some side-to-side play in the band which I'm pretty sure is not supposed to happen.

CaptainSarcastic

On another topic, a Galaxy Watch 7 unactivated in a box shouldn't be a concern when it comes to the battery yet, right? Like it should take months and months for it to lose charge to a dangerous point (in terms of battery health)? Right?

I got one a while back because of an absurd trade-in value for my Galaxy Watch 5, and intend to use it to trade in toward a Pixel Watch 3 if Google or BestBuy ever add the 7 to the list of models you can trade in. I'm loathe to break the shrinkwrap and open the box just to charge something I have no intent of keeping, potentially losing value.

Problem is no I don't think it is fully seated in the watch because I can slide it all the way to one side towards the release button or slide it back into the "normal wearing" position and at no point do I seem to be able to jimmy it out of the track to get it out. The release button seems to pop all the way up like it's supposed to when the band is back into the locked position but I can still move the band in the track back and forth. I was trying to move it into the spot where I presume it should be able to come out and gently pry it a bit to see if it would pop out but I'm worried about breaking something at this point. Thankfully I like the band I guess?

I discovered soon after my last post that Always On Display had been enabled on my watch. I never enabled it myself and I had explicitly disabled it before so I'm guessing it was enabled as a byproduct of the 5.1 update. I only went looking because there was this weird elliptical ring around the time display that would disappear soon after I tilted to wake which then made me realize the display was always on when I tilted to wake.

Anyways, after disabling AOD I haven't had a single freeze - and that's been 3-4 days. Tried to get a freeze in situations I would see some and nope, all good.

May want to check if it was enabled for you too.

The elliptical ring disappeared once I disabled AOD. I think it's how the AOD display indicates the screen while on is inactive, but who knows?
