I love how as bugfuck nuts the main games' plots are, the more you dig for the more obscure points of plot or side things, the more insane it gets. My favorite piece of weirdness is the novella about the weirdo obsessed with peanut butter that sneaks into a post MGS Shadow Moses in a seal costume.

Between Subsistence's Snake Tales and the pre-mission briefings, MGS2 just has the best side material.

Oh, man. I think it was the background material in MGS2 that really hooked me in. In retrospect, I love that they gave the most superfluous member of the MGS1 support team a chance to tell her story. ...and then she disappeared into a black hole forever.

The North Remembers.
I've been a huge fan of the MGS series since the beginning; when we got our first Playstation it came with a demo disc (remember those?) which had the first two areas of MGS1 on it (the loading bay and helipad). I played through that demo more times than I can remember, and so when my brother and I were told we got to pick one game each to get I had to get MGS1. Though not in the Solid series, I remember having and playing the original NES Metal Gear as well, and it being impossible to a kid of my age.

That said I'm amazed at how much of the "extra" stuff mentioned above it still completely new to me and how there's still things I'm seeing/hearing about in your playthrough right now that I didn't know about (Never saw the women's bathroom codec calls; Grey Fox will spring you from the cell? What??). So needless to say this thread has already been great, and I'm looking forward to what other insane crazy hidden stuff get's shown.

Also, +1 vote for AC!D, only because I own both games and never got around to actually playing them.

Same here, but you know what really gets me about it? At the time I got the game I must have read every strategy guide or walkthrough on it, online and off, featuring all the neat tips, tricks, and easter eggs there are and I don't recall a single one of them mentioning this.

I too remember trying the original Metal Gear on the NES and finding it impenetrable to my young mind. What's funny is going back and playing it now it's not even really that hard, it's just that the stealth/sneaking mechanic was completely different from any other games at the time (plus they increased the dog count for the system among the other changes :argh: )

There are some pretty good 'hidden' codec moments in MGS2 as well, I'll be trying to show off as many as I can there as well.

One codec call I'm upset I kept forgetting about is that in MGS1, if you call Miller on a noisy floor, he tells you to walk slowly, but snake responds with "I... I can't..." because walking slowly hasn't been implemented yet :v: Miller then suggests wearing your socks over your boots.

My ONLY memory of Metal Gear for the nes was never getting past the dog filled hell that was the jungle. :gonk: those pups were NOT nice.

Also I've been editing the latest episodes, and made this from Episode 9. I'm pretty sure 9 is where everyone will unbookmark and unsubscribe, we're both pretty drunk by then.

Yeah, like I was saying, those dogs in the NES version are just too much. The MSX version has far less of them, and they're easy to handle. Probably the most frustrating part of that one is the tank fight just because it wasn't thought thru (You have to put landmines in front of it and hope it decides to go forward onto them without getting hit yourself).

Yes, fighting a tank is one of the many things unoriginal about MGS. Seriously, it's harder to list the things that aren't reused from Metal Gear 1 & 2. Like, some of the personalities present, certain plot devices like Foxdie, and the PAL key, and Grey Fox being a zombie ninja (though the cyborg part kinda hearkens back to the robots of part one that may or may not have been prototype Snatchers) anything to do with Psycho Mantis, and the sniper stuff are all that's really springing to mind as not having some sort of similar presence in the earlier games. Maybe the chase scene at the very end, though there was an escape countdown at the end of the first game.

Acid and Acid two had god drat amazing alert themes. Everything was pretty good on their soundtracks, but their alerts REALLY stood out for me.

Also just so no one gets their hopes up, much like many things, my skill at MGA also waxes and wanes between "holy poo poo I'm an expert" to "HOW CAN YOU gently caress UP FIGHTING RAVEN'S TANK THIS MANY TIMES". There will be no skill runs involved with this thread.

Also those wolves are crazy. One time I went through during a point after this in the game and didn't do any measures to make them like me, so they were all riled up, and I decided to take a breather outside the crawlspace. Then I hear this scraping sound, and look in first person, and one wolf is actually crawling very slowly under the rocks, scraping against them to get to me in his rage, and made it through to fight me. :dogbutton:
Even moreso than the tank fight, this is my most dreaded room in the game. Not only do I get lost each time, I also get mauled! Those pups play far to rough. Danaru effortlessly getting through it each time sure puts my attempts to shame.

That ones new to me as were the womens bathroom ones. Did the mens bathroom have any special calls? Also, if you happen to end up back in the first Sniper Wolf fight room, whip out the sniper rifle and hunt rats. That nets you a pretty amusing call.

One thing to note about the Metal Gear Acid games is they are a different continuity than Metal Gear Solid. Snake is still a legendary soldier who blew up a Metal Gear and killed Big Boss but there's no Liquid, no Ocelot, no Patriots or anything else.

This allows the creators to give Snake an entirely new backstory just to mess with him.

Then there's Ghost Babel for the Game Boy that might take place in between Metal Gear 2 and MGS1? Or it might be its own continuity as well. It doesn't really contradict MGS per se.

Also, regarding men's room conversations I think there might be one or two, where they awkwardly mention how, even though it's embarrassing, even the most highly trained super soldiers need to take a leak every now and then. I'd say this is a call back to Metal Gear 2 where during the part where you and the lady soldier you befriend are escorting a captured scientist to freedom who is in no way acting suspicious at all, no sir, you end up having to take a break (in raw sewage) so he can go off to use the bathroom, and not at all inform the bad guys where you are.

The first Metal Gear is still kind of it's own thing but yeah, Metal Gear 2 is basically a 2D version of MGS, so many gameplay *and* story elements were straight up copied 1:1.

I'm not entirely sure about this, but I think I've read years ago that MGS actually started development as a proper MG2 remake, because almost noone knew that game, even in Japan. All the parallels would make sense that way.

Ghost Babel takes place a few years after MG1 and pretends MG2 never happened. It's an alternate version of MGS1, Snake is forced out of retirement by Campbell, he gets introduced to Mei Ling at the start of the mission etc. So yeah, it does contradict MGS.

The time bomb is always planted in your inventory, thankfully with a 25 minute timer (and a Deepthroat call just in case you're really dumb or unlucky) so it's hard to completely miss it unless you're DarkSydePhil.

Are you sure that the Zanzibarland land intrusion didn't happen in Ghost Babel's timeline? I don't remember anything explicitly contradicting it. But yeah, Mei Ling being there totally causes a problem with MGS. Apparently the time line has Metal Gear happen in 1995, Metal Gear 2 in 1999, and Ghost Babel in 2002, while the MGS story is set in 2005. If they hadn't put Mei Ling in there (which is probably due to laziness on the writers adapting the game to be based off the success of MGS) all four could have co-existed without problem.

-I don't know if any game villian has as much fun as Liquid does.

I would say it's less that Youtube hates this game, as it is that lately due to their controversy, Konami's decided to double down on content matching. See the recent controversy about the guy who made a video about how Kojima is leaving the company and how Konami initially put a content match takedown request on it, only for several hours later Youtube itself making history by saying "no dudes, you're full of it" and putting the video back up. Their claims they later used as "proof" was less than a minute of MGS V footage, which was mostly the title screen in a static shot. The company is seriously having a clear and obvious breakdown as a result of their head deciding that pachinko machines make more money than videogames (to be fair, he's not wrong.)

I remember, as a young child, thinking it was really neat to have a game where you killed the enemy leader midway through the story, but of course any credit such a move would have given the game was taken away when Liquid turns out to be pretty much immortal.

Legendary soldier indeed!
