:siren:I'm no rookie! Let's play the whole drat Metal Gear Solid series! [OPEN SPOILERS]:siren:

Pictured: Tactical Espionage Action

First thing's first, if you've never played a video game before and need me to tell you what Metal Gear Solid is, you should leave this thread right now. We're going to be slinging around spoilers like mad both in the videos and in the thread. There's a bunch of excellent LPs better suited to first timers. They'll also be better in general so I'm doing you a favour.

With Phantom Pain finally getting a release date, we're going to be playing straight through from MGS1 to MGS4, and possibly a couple others depending on how the thread goes. We're still on the fence with Peace Walker, since I've never actually played it before, but I do own it, so who knows? WE'RE TOTALLY PLAYING PEACE WALKER.

In the case of the mainline games, I'll be using older save files, which means we'll have some of the unlockable fun stuff! :toot: In the case of MGS1, I have both the bandana and the stealth, but in later games I only have a couple things unlocked. I'll also avoid using anything blatantly cheaty unless it's either funny, or helps me skip something bullshit. Also boss battles are fair game for the bandana. :colbert:

Spoiler protocol is don't worry about it, spoil whatever you want, although consider going light on Peace Walker spoilers if you want us to play it down the line.

This will be a very cas' LP, including talking over some cutscenes, embarassingly bad gameplay, blatant spoilers, and inappropriate jokes during serious sections of the game. At the very least I have most of these games memorized, so if I get confused, there won't be any episodes of zero progress. :v: Don't expect this to be overly informative or skillful though.

So since I am a man who codifies hubris, I decided to challenge myself to a drinking game. I'm kind of a wuss when it comes to beer (I'm a cider man, dammit, the only beer I've liked so far are draughts) so I figured I'd give myself a reason to try new stuff and also punish myself when I suck. Each session I'll have a new beer to try, or I'll bring back an old contender from earlier in the LP. I mention this in the video but I also got sassed by guards and Grace a lot, so I didn't explain it too well.

- On an alert (either my own fault or due to story reasons, as long as the time says "ALERT"), One Drink
- On eating a ration, Two Drinks
- On a Game Over for any reason (not including Fission Mailed, Fake Death Pills, or the Sorrow :colbert:), One shot of Rum.

Will you be using any of the alternate costumes for MGS1?

Snake and the Ninja have their alternate costumes, Meryl and Otacon are in their normal outfits though. I'm probably going to run through a second save file two more times off screen and make a bonus video to show those two off.

I read somewhere that Otacon and Meryl get new costumes if you beat their endings with the tuxedo, I never tried it myself so I'm not sure if it's true, but I'll try them both at some point. Considering the bullshit I'm doing offscreen to set up for MGS2, this isn't anything major

EDIT: Apparently Meryl's other outfit is only in Twin Snakes, and Otacon has no other costume at all, it's just one of those things that immortalizes as truth, like how you could TOTALLY tranq Ocelot after talking to Ames and get his dogtags, you just have to be fast. :argh:

Especially since you are by your own admission a hefty Canadian man.

Shot of rum every time a character gets an introduction.
drink every time the codec points something obvious out.

And this but only when it happens in a cutscene.
doing it for every instance will turn your liver into pâté.

Just wait until episode three, Grace was a goddamn liar about me beating it without getting a game over. :frogdowns: also protip, regardless of height or nationality, don't knock back multiple ciders before doing a drinking game involving rum.

I might switch out the rum condition for a beer related one, and then also accept drinking words/conditions from the thread. If you guys haven't noticed, we're basically making this poo poo up as we go along

Bizarrely enough, the two scenes it didn't like were the scene where Snake is in the SDV, and the part where he talks to Octopus right after the sepia-toned flyaround of REX. The rest was fine apparently :psyduck:

Aw, man, MGS drinking game.

I tried that with a couple of friends, once.

Take a shot every time someone mentions nanomachines. (This rule was preemptively waived for anything past the first game)

Take a shot every time someone says "Metal Gear".

Take a shot every time Snake repeats the previous sentence in the form of a question.

It went from "This is boring, I'll just take a drink whenever" to "Holy poo poo, I literally cannot drink fast enough to keep up" in the space of the DARPA chief scene.

I genuinely considered the nanomachines one, then I watched this video again and decided against it.

Speaking of the drinking game, I've updated the second post with a description of the drinks involved, and I'll be keeping it updated as we go along. We're also going to stick with the normal rules for the next session, but plan to introduce thread decided conditions later on. So far I have a bad feeling about it considering what's already been suggested.

:siren:Let's Play Metal Gear Solid Episode 2 - Tumbling Down:siren:

Fun facts for this episode:

-If you do manage to beat the combat segment with Meryl unarmed, Snake automatically scoots over to the socom and picks it up. Also note that Meryl shits on us later for being a gunless dumbass when we met :buddy:
-When Baker mentions Jim, he's referring to Jim Houseman, the secretary of defense. You may remember him as the total prick who's technically leading the mission, despite his only active input being sending a plane to nuke you.
-The line Ocelot was saying before I shot him in the rear end was "I love to reload during a battle, There's nothing like the feeling of slamming a long silver bullet into a well greased chamber". If it weren't for the torture fetish and the implied rapes, Ocelot would easily be my favourite character.
-You can call Campbell after speaking to Meryl and tell him she's okay. He's super relieved. :unsmith: I did it off screen between episodes though, so whoops.

Well, they DO have a couple uses, but only as makeshifts if you don't have better items for it. If you smoke while standing near lasers, the smoke refracts the beams and makes them temporarily visible (this is used much more in Metal Gear 1 and 2, and the MGS Game Boy game). Also, iirc, don't they also calm your nerves in sniper mode a little, but not as much as the pills?

I remember them being SUPER useful in MGS4 because taking a smoke break did wonders for Snake's psyche.

Considering Deep Throat was named such deliberately after the hugely popular porno out at the time (seriously, Deep Throat is probably the most successful porn of all time, doing better money than most Hollywood films that year) I think it's okay to giggle at it, because at the end of the day it's a pun (DEEP cover) based on blowjobs.

Also, Deep Throat is a weird movie. Not as out there as other mainstream at the time porn like Devil in Miss Jones or anything, but a movie about a woman born mutated so she has a clit in her throat is pretty weird still. Also it feels scummy to even think about its popularity because years later the star, Linda Lovelace, claims she was forced to do the film (sometimes at gunpoint!) by her husband who got all her money, and considers the film to be her getting raped multiple times.

We just recorded another four episodes, and I didn't take a single shot. :smuggo:

With that said, it was also the most cutscene heavy and backtrack heavy section of the game. :smugjones: Probably going to leave the drinking rules as is for the rest of MGS1, but come MGS2 we're definitely doing current rules + thread suggested/voted conditions.

We've also recorded enough to keep up an episode every two days for the next little while, barring any scheduling issues I want to keep that up. Unfortunately I have an 8-day work week, so I work different days every week. Scheduling is bound to get fucky at some point. Oh drat I never even thought of that, I stopped trying to shoot him after I chaffed him and he crouched down and wasted forever without being able to hit him

Weihenstephaner is amazing, but for some reason it's only good when it's on tap. I had some at Wurstkuche (German sausage place in LA, highly recommended) and it was loving amazing. But when I buy it in the bottles, it's not the same.

Weihenstephaner kristall, even bottled, is really loving good though and I recommend it.

I'll keep an eye out, our liquor store is wierd in that they have boxes with all the bigger brands, and then a rack with like fifty kinds of random-rear end beers from around the world with no rhyme or reason. also 60% of the building is dedicated specifically to wine, which I'm way too serf-class to be drinking.

Also, I'm convinced now that Danaru doesn't actually know that you're safe from cameras if you stand directly underneath them.

I do, but Snake controls a bit... "heavy" in MGS1, and sometimes I forget that and end up popping off walls when I don't mean to, leading to an alert. Plus we basically have infinite chaff grenades, so cameras can suck it :colbert:

If I was in any financial situation I could describe as stable, I would legitimately consider this. I loving love REX

I'll excuse it for some spots, but when you kept getting frustrated at the VERY slow moving cameras at the corners above the stairs in the first room was ridiculous. They might be literally the easiest cameras to avoid in the whole game.

You mean the ones in the tank hangar? The problem I had on the right side was trying to get the right timing to snatch the guard without walking on the loud floor. The camera itself was barely an issue since half the time it looks over at a dead end I have no need to go to. The one on the left I chaffed basically on autopilot because I couldn't be arsed with it.

The ones in the warhead storage area I DID just run under since no one is wandering too closely around them.

My main regret is not thinking to just flip the guard and run away, considering that's pretty much been my mainstay so far. :(

Mantis, you might want to recalibrate that psychic stuff.

Fun facts for this episode:

-If you repeatedly call Mei Ling and say you don't want to save, she sticks out her tongue at you. We were planning on doing that until she killed the mood by yelling at us a bunch.
-I totally thought Psycho Mantis was a Latino luchadore when I was a kid, apparently he's Russian. This game is an accent catastrophe.
-Apparently Mantis worked for both the KGB AND the FBI before joining FOXHOUND. Hell of a resume, bro.
-Atavistic: relating to or characterized by reversion to something ancient or ancestral.
-I actually really liked the Metal Gear Solid book. It was just as campy as the game :v:

I don't dislike MGS4 as much as most people do, it has some really great gameplay additions, the only problem being that the locations are sorta lovely, and good loving god 90% of the game is cutscenes and that awful Prague level. They even managed to make Shadow Moses suck by filling it full of hundreds of bullshit fun-killing robot enemies. :( Also loving Naomi "HI I DIED IN AN EARLIER ACT HERE'S A VIDEO OF ME EXPOSITING THE SAME loving THING FOR ALL ETERNITY ISN'T THIS A GREAT REWARD FOR THE MICROWAVE HALLWAY" Hunter. I seriously hated Naomi less when she was actively trying to kill me. Also I'm sorry but I love the ending scene with Big Boss. Yeah it's dumb but dammit they both get closure and Snake gets to ride off into the sunset with his Totally Heterosexual™ boyfriend and they get to go on plane adventures with their adopted daughter :3: How is that not the best thing

Also here's a bonus video. Joke's on you Psycho Mantis I'm a trash human being

Who's ready for some backtracking?!

Fun facts for this episode:

- The reason it doesn't let us backtrack is so we can't get the PSG-1 early. Doesn't mean I have to like it though.
- Apparently my muscle memory remembers the pupcave way better than my brain does
- I loving hate the sniper wolf fight. Snake moves the PSG-1 so slowly that you usually get shot before you can get your sights back on Wolf. MGS1's controls did NOT age well. The entire difficulty of the fight is solely how difficult it is to aim.
- We finish up the most egregious backtracking in this and the next episode. I don't mind the PAL key backtracking as much, at least it's the same building, and we get to see REX by then.
- Grace is a liar.

The auto-fire comment means if you use an official Sony controller that has a rapid fire setting on it, he'll tell you to stop cheating and start over from scratch. I had an off-brand that he couldn't tell for and totally cheesed it all the time.

Also, I totally called it back in 1998 that they were lampshading that Big Boss wasn't dead here as the big reason why they weren't sending his remains to the terrorists.

I forget, doesn't if you wait long enough in the prison cell Grey Fox comes and springs you?

Yep! He slashes up the door lock, and even if you don't leave, Johnny notices the door is open and shoots at you.

Also if it does catch you doing autofire, it just electrocutes you forever and never actually ends. I figured something cool would happen :( I could have sworn in the Twin Snakes, he shoots you if he detects autofire, but I also can't find any videos of it.

EDIT: I found this horrible quality clip of Ocelot breaking the 4th wall even more than he did in the PSX version, I love MGS' constaint fourth wall breaking.

There are some pretty good 'hidden' codec moments in MGS2 as well, I'll be trying to show off as many as I can there as well.

One codec call I'm upset I kept forgetting about is that in MGS1, if you call Miller on a noisy floor, he tells you to walk slowly, but snake responds with "I... I can't..." because walking slowly hasn't been implemented yet :v: Miller then suggests wearing your socks over your boots.

I too remember trying the original Metal Gear on the NES and finding it impenetrable to my young mind. What's funny is going back and playing it now it's not even really that hard, it's just that the stealth/sneaking mechanic was completely different from any other games at the time (plus they increased the dog count for the system among the other changes :argh: )

My ONLY memory of Metal Gear for the nes was never getting past the dog filled hell that was the jungle. :gonk: those pups were NOT nice.

Also I've been editing the latest episodes, and made this from Episode 9. I'm pretty sure 9 is where everyone will unbookmark and unsubscribe, we're both pretty drunk by then.

I honestly believe Grace says stupid poo poo on purpose solely to get me yelled at.

Fun facts for this episode:

-Yes we lost an episode due to OBS not recording it. Also note that according to Grace, we managed to make that drink, not-record a 31 minute episode, realize it didn't record and check the other recording, and then play through a half hours worth of gameplay to get back to where we were, all in the span of half an hour. Math isn't Grace's strong point.
-As a result, we both talk over the cutscenes even more than usual, so uh, enjoy
-Here's Grace's precious drink:
