Random rear end thoughts: Notre Dame is the #1 overall seed for good reason. They own the head-to-head win over Syracuse this year and have finally as a program added a good offense to a phenomenal D. Lyle Thompson for Albany is one of the best offensive players in the game, and has been for years. Denver is probably the hottest team coming into the tournament. Hopkins is down but they are always dangerous in the tournament. Colgate is dangerous but UNC gets the luck of coming in off a bye week. Syracuse looks as strong as ever.

The game at large seems to be shifting from an offensive focus to a defensive one. Notre Dame consistently makes deep tournament runs on the backs of their defense combined with very slow, deliberate offensive posessions, and other teams have caught on. US Lacrosse has gone from adding the Stall Warning rule (i.e: "keep it in the box") to telling officials to call it more often, to now starting a shot clock when a stall warning is given. Whether or not this is a good thing, you can largely thank/blame ND for it. Albany is just about the only team left that largely ignores defense and goes into games guns blazing.

This year should have another pretty open bracket. The top 4 seeds are all fantastic but it's hard to count out even some of the unranked teams. Should be a fun one.

Hopkins is a bit tough to get a bead on right now. A couple of their losses are understandable (@Cuse, @UNC), others are confusing (@OSU, @Towson). Still though, they closed out the season really well on a 5 game win streak and they've clearly got the offense to hang with anyone. They give up a lot of goals though so they basically need to get into another track meet to give themselves a good shot. I'm not totally sold on UVA (why the hell you giving up 14 goals to St. Joseph's?), so it should be a really good game. I'd love to see them put up 31 combined again.

E: Now that I look at it, that honestly might be the best game of the 1st round.
E2: Actually Albany/Cornell should be a hoot too.

E3: holy poo poo Denver gets effectively a home game in the quarterfinals at Mile High if they beat Brown. Duke's gonna be pissed. gently caress duke
