Tempora mutantur, et nos mutamur in illis

Detroit MI. Run down building

quote:

Take one last look
at the place you're leaving.

The day brought rain and it kept on raining into the night. The message said to meet at midnight. In addition to the deluge, fog rolled in off of the lake. The location happened to be a cinder block building that had a brown coating of dirt, dust, grime and years of weathering. The only light to be seen came from the more populous parts of the city. All of the street lights were out, only the light pollution from the city provided any illumination. A lightning bolt cracks in the sky, lighting up the building temporarily. A small strip of broken concrete shows the way to the location. Right at the front of the building is a windowless metal door. To the left side there's two large garage doors that don't look as if they've been opened in years. As uninviting as the building happens to seem, the door is open.

Inside the building there's a few light fixtures doing their best to fight the darkness. The result ends up being more shadows then light. The further away from the overhead lights, the darker it gets. At the far ends of the warehouse there's nothing, but darkness. The inside of the building looks as though it was gutted. All interior walls have been removed, leaving a hollow shell of a building. The remaining supports keep the exterior walls and roof in place. In the center of this large cavernous room is a large folding table and seven chairs. Some where in the building there's a steady drip as rain seeps through cracks in the roof and lands on the bare concrete floor.

In the message that brought you here, it said to go inside and wait. Not certain what to expect you go into the warehouse.

Welcome to the Seventh Warehouse 23 game. I'm running this game as same as I run my other games. Here's what you need to know before you post.
General rules for this game are as follows:

Post format:

Name - Location
In game text.

Actions and rules stuff

Out of character posts can either be regular text without a name tag or in italics. If I need stat blocks, then use either [pre] or [super] tags. As long as things are fairly easy to read, I'm good.

I need people to be fairly consistent posters. I'd rather not have to repeatedly prompt people to post. If something comes up, just let me know and I'll work around it. If the game isn't working out for you or if there's some reason you want to drop, please let me know. If its a non-game related problem, I can work around it or at the very least make sure it doesn't impact the other players too much. If the problem involves the game itself, then I'll do what I can to resolve the problem.
At the start here, characters will have found their way to the warehouse in question.

Jack Stone - Detroit MI

Cresting a hill, Stone finally catches sight of the run-down building. He pauses to catch his breath.

"Thank god... The least those bastards could have done is give me a lift! I haven't had to trudge through so much urban decay since... St. Petersburg? Yeah, Petersburg, ugh."

Pulling out his hip flask, Stone takes a quick gulp of his liquor du jour, then picks his briefcase back up and begins walking the final few hundred feet towards the building.

"I hope that building has somewhere to pee..."

And here's stats for equipment:

PRIDE briefcase -
Appears to be a normal, if a bit old, attaché case. The only two notable things about it are the emblem "PRIDE" emblazoned on one side, and the fact that when you hold it up to your ear, it appears to be faintly... vibrating? Weighs 2 lbs.

PRIDE printer -
A bulky, large, older-style copy machine. The logo says "PRIDE" instead of Xerox, the paper tray appears to be locked shut, and there's a strange compartment on the side of this machine. Weighs 50 lbs.

PRIDE holdout pistol -
This must be a joke. This appears to be a child's toy gun, although made out of polished chrome. One on side of the barrel, a stylized PRIDE logo is emblazoned. On the other, a cartoon depiction of an agent with oversized ear plugs reminds the user, "Always remember to wear your ear protection!" The holster it is hidden within, strapped to the small of Agent Stone's back, has a handful of earplugs haphazardly stuffed into the bottom.
3D Corrosive damage, Accuracy 3, Range 18-54, weight 1.8 lbs, Bulk 2, Rate of Fire 1, Shots 66(3), ST 4, Recoil 1, REDACTED

Dapper Vest -
The top of the line in Georgia Valerie's "Agent chic" line, this off-the-shelf suit hangs over a dozen pounds of protection over it's wearer, concealed within a pinstripe navy wool/cotton blend vest. The tag on the lapel proclaims, "Guaranteed to save your life, or your money back!"
Torso protection - 9 Damage resistance versus Piercing or Cutting attacks, 5 Damage Resistance versus Crushing attacks, 3 Damage resistance versus all other damage types. 14.5 lbs, concealed as a business suit.

Agent Watch -
The end-all, be-all of espionage tools, the Agent Watch is only available from a single buyer, whose identity is the best-kept secret in the world of spying. This is the watch Steve Jobs wishes he could have made. Appears to be a normal, if large, Rolex. However, when a special catch underneath the face is triggered, the top of the watch flips up, to reveal a screen and a small touchpad, with an automated voice greeting the user. "Hello agent, what can I do for you?"
Sophisticated watch crafted from expensive materials, the Agent Watch combines the functions of a cellular phone with a miniaturized computer. Although it only contains 10 GB of storage, it has a complexity two processor, and comes pre-loaded with several important programs such as RemDetPro, TRCKR, ScanQuik, and Dragon Voice-to-Text 12x. In addition, the watch also has a high-quality mic, lens, and extendable document scanner. The only two downsides to the Agent Watch are that it's compact size prevents more than one program from running concurrently, and that it is heavy for it's size. Weight .66 lbs, rechargeable battery, disguised.

Radio Beacon -
An old-style magnetized car beacon, subtle this is not. When slapped underneath a vehicle, this devices latches on, and begins transmitting a loud, traceable signal.

Agent Glasses -
Custom-built, these aviator glasses are the envy of agents the world over. Using repurposed military parts, and exotic (expensive!) materials, the glasses combine several important functions into one pair of innocuous, if bulky, sunglasses.
Powered by two AAA batteries loaded in the oversized temple bends, these glasses have a small button discreetly hid on either side of the frame. Clicking the left button activates a built-in infrared illuminator/detector, and provides the wearer with Night Vision 4 for up to 30 hours. Clicking the right button shutters the shades, both providing the wearer with a handy disguise in the event of a Kanye West concert, and also providing Nictating Membrane 4. When in standby, the glasses function as normal sunglasses, providing Protected Vision and DR 1. weigh .66 lbs

Nonlethal Multivariable Pistol -
Originally intended for SWAT teams, the creator of the NMP was ruined when his product failed to sell. Only a few hundred of these were ever produced, but a well-connected buyer can still find one occasionally. The device appears to be a slightly-modified TASER M26, with an oddly-shaped Picatinny Rail on top. The device accepts "Clips" of AA batteries which provide up to 40 seconds of stun, either through the drive-stun feature at the end of the barrel, or by firing specialized cartridges containing electrode darts, seven yards of coiled, shielded wire, and two gas containers to eject the leads. When fired, or using the drive-stun feature, the weapon incapacitates targets with a burst of electricity. The rail on top is specialized to accept a Foster-Miller Webshot grenade tube. This allows the NMP to launch one of four different types of nonlethal grenades, and allow the user a staggering amount of options in a firefight. Current Webshot-compatible munitions include Net grenades, Smoke grenades, Tear Gas grenades, and Illumination grenades. Also comes standard with a targeting laser.
Range between 1 and seven yards for TASER shots, up to ten yards for grenades, weight 3 lbs, bulk -3, recoil 2, rate of fire 1, damage and effects vary-
TASER cartridge 1d-3 pi, $20 .3 lbs apiece (Anyone hit by taser must make a HT-5 roll for every 5 seconds of electricity to avoid being Stunned)
Net damage 1d+1(0.5) cr dkb at <5' range, $50, .5 lbs apiece (If hit, target is captured in a 10'x10' net, and also must make a HT-5 roll to avoid being Stunned)
Smoke damage 1d+1(0.5) cr dkb, provides 8-yard radius of smoke for 25 seconds. $15, .5 lbs apiece, comes in Red/White/Black
Tear Gas damage 1d+1(0.5) cr dkb, provides 8-yard radius of tear gas for 20 seconds (Anyone in cloud must make a HT-2 roll to resist coughing, and a HT-2 roll to resist blindness) $15, .5 lbs apiece.
Illumination damage 1d+1(0.5) cr dkb, provides 185 yards of illumination for 40 seconds $25, .5 lbs apiece.
Battery clip - provides 40 seconds of stun time for TASER. $4, .8 lbs apiece.

Cufflink Detonators -
Although incredibly useful, these devices do not see much use. Most agents disdain using explosives, and most saboteurs don't care too much about hiding blasting caps on their person. This small case contains 6 mother-of-pearl cufflinks, which contain a small radio receiver, power source, and a minute amount of explosive. When activated, by twisting the top of the cufflink, a signal sent on a preprogrammed radio frequency can activate the links, igniting them and any explosives they are attached to. $30 .05 lbs apiece

ManScaping Kit -
Sold by SpyBay (Your one-stop shop for spy gear!) this standard men's grooming kit contains a few added features. The two bars of Brad's Bees brand soap are each .5 lbs of plastic explosive, (Note: will not actually clean) the tube of Pearly White! brand toothpaste actually contains .25 lbs of extrudable explosive, (Note: Don't put this in your mouth) and the can of Smooth Dude shave cream contains .9 lbs of foam explosive. (Note: DO NOT SHAVE WITH THIS) A disclaimer on the kit says "Do not expose to open flame"

Advanced Disguise Kit-
The most advanced disguise kit on the market, this large box is filled with everything from foam rubber applicators, to spray paints, to silicone face molds. A necessity for an experienced field agent.

Crash Kit -
This duffel bag is filled with medical equipment for almost any situation. There are a few questionable additions to the bag, however, such as a small case containing ten vials, five marked "Serum", five marked "Applicator", and an anesthesia mask with several chloroform bottles under it.

Crash the party Kit -
This duffel bag is filled with various bottles of alcohol for almost any situation. There are various wines, from goon to high-end, tequilas, scotch whiskys, bourbons, rums, and one ominous black jug marked XXXXX.

The printer and the disguise kit are crated, transported, and set up at whatever location Agent Stone is currently using as his home base. His crash bag is usually loaded into whatever vehicle he is currently using, along with his duffel bag of booze. He keeps his holdout pistol under his shirt on the small of his back, his NMP in a side holster under his jacket, and his hip flask on... his hip. The first two are loaded, and the third keeps him loaded. One of each type of grenade is clipped to his belt. His multitool is in a suit pocket, along with a handful of zip-tie cuffs and a small wad of hemostatic bandaging, giving him 26.66 total lbs of worn gear. Spare ammunition, misc. spy tools, and the like are kept in his briefcase, along with a spare bottle of whiskey. He carries his briefcase with him everywhere, it weighs 14.15 lbs when fully-loaded.

Toby Philips - Detroit MI, Inside Warehouse

Stepping out of the cab, Toby, put on his sunglasses in his front pocket and started taking in the building. He had been on some weird heists, but this was something else. Dressed in a button down blue shirt, worn leather jacket and some cargo pants and sneakers he looked rather unassuming as was the intent. Putting some gum in his mouth and taking out his pen flashlight he started scanning the building quickly as he walked inside. Flashing it inside the building, he took the open door as his welcoming party and walked inside. As he smacked his gum, he looked over the walls and ceiling.

"What a loving dump." Was all he could say. He knew it would be bad, but the man in the suit had seemed a bit more clean room, going to autopsy you way less run down building way.

Toby adjusted the heavy bag on his shoulder and his backpack. They had his tools, this was a job, not a pleasure cruise. Walking over to a folding chair, he wipes off the dust from the seat and sits down, his heavy equipment bag and his backpack in front of him. Looking around he plugged in headphones into his phone and started playing a song.

Bobbing his head, Toby didn't even think to look outside for anyone, after all he was here to do a job, and sometimes he just needed a moment to relax and not see everything all at once.

A Velociraptor!
Aug 20, 2007

William Palgraves

The crack of lightning briefly illuminates both the building and the man who stands outside, safely covered from the drizzle by a trusty umbrella, of which he would never be caught without. The taxi man had given him the oddest look when they arrived at the location. Really, he can't blame the driver. This must all seem so strange to one not already in the know of what was to happen here, or why indeed it had to happen here. Of course, he hadn't explained a thing and he's sure the man was more than happy to not get an explanation. So money was simply exchanged with barely a word and now he here he stands.
The rain makes an enjoyable patter on his overhead cover and he savours it for a moment as he observes the building before him. A locale to be expected, by all accounts, he thinks to himself. Hidden away from the world, yet still a part of it. Really it seems like the only obvious choice. A chuckle escapes him as he then walks over to the already open door and passes straight through without any hint of worry for what might be on the other side.

The umbrella is shaken out and closed as he regards the building's sparse interior.
Shadows surround an empty room, save for a single table and seven chairs. It all looks and feels quite familiar, but he can't exactly place it. He peers further into the building and smiles into the seemingly endless darkness, giving a nod as he does. Then he promptly walks over to the table, runs a finger along the surface and brings it up to an eye for close inspection. "Hmm." he says, as if he's answered a nagging question for himself.

Then catching the hint of sound from headphones, he turns to regard the man already sitting in one of the chairs with a most quizzical look.
"Oh." He turns to the open door and then back again to the man, a look of mild confusion showing briefly. Had the man been here all along? No matter. Striding around to the occupied chair, he extends a hand to it's occupant. "So sorry. Have we met?"

Toby Philips - Detroit MI, Inside Warehouse

There isn't even a second of surprise, the timing seemingly exact as the sound clicks off and his hand extended into the suits hand. "Pleasure to meet you. Here about the job yeah?" Toby didn't seem very put off by the question if they had met or not, "I don't think so, I don't really hang around the business suit type, if you take my meaning. At least in ways that you would remember me." There was a natural smile and a bit of cockiness in his shake, taking off the head phones and stuffing them in his pocket.

"I look like someone you know?" Toby said smacking his gum with a bit of a grin. There was a formality to these heists never give out names and information and all that, Toby wasn't sure what this one was going to be like, so he kept it close to his chest.

The man's shake is returned just as firmly, although he does retract his hand rather quickly. "A pleasure for me as well, I'm sure. The...job." He clicks his fingers as if remembering. "Yes, most certainly. I received a message and everything. It simply told me to wait here though, usually I would expect someone to be here to greet us, perhaps even with refreshments." His look darts back to the darkness at the other end of the building for a moment before he takes a seat himself opposite the man, setting his suitcase and umbrella down on the frightfully dusty floor. "Oh well. I'll wager we won't be waiting very long at all."

He smiles at the grinning man with a shake of his head. "Oh, everyone looks like someone I know. Or knew, to be more precise, I suppose. You do seem slightly familiar in particular though." He examines the man's face further, although the lighting here does not make it remarkably easy for him. "You didn't spend time in Norway, by any chance, did you?"

He reaches into his pocket and produces a sweet smelling bag. "I'm Palgraves, by the way. William Palgraves. Care for a jelly bean?"

"Did someone say refreshments?" Stone asks, as he strides into the room, shaking off water. Setting his briefcase on the table, he opens it and pulls out a bottle in one swift motion.

"Whisky, anyone?"

Toby Philips - Detroit MI, Inside Warehouse

"Yeah the Job, I heard it was one of those multiple contract ones." Toby lied, not really thinking about it. Better to think that we all were going to be best pals and buds. Generally Toby was a people person, liked to mingle, but he didn't really work with the mingling types. It was a sad state of affairs that you can't count on the courtesy and honor among stickup men and thieves. "I was expecting a bit of the same, more like a hospital style setup or something. But yeah this place is just a dump. Waiting, I don't have a problem with. If everything is on the level there isn't anything to worry about." He said tipping his head and getting a water bottle from his pack.

After taking a swig, Toby notices the movement in front of the warehouse.

"Hello there." Toby said before the new man could fully enter the room. Without skipping a beat he turns to the suit, and gives a bit of a nod. "Only place I've been in Norway is DNB ASA Bank for business. Not the type that makes many stops beyond that. Mostly I just have a flat in Brisbane, and I guess... now Detroit." He said before considering the flask that was put before them.

"I'll take grape jelly bean, but I'll hold on the whisky, I like my bundy. Also not sure if we are going to have to work tonight, you dig?" He said back, considering his options he figured a little name couldn't hurt. "Names Toby, by the way, and Willy, if you don't mind me calling you that. What parts do you fair from? Also Mr. Whisky, what brings you around about this way other than the job."

"Yes, indeed. I've heard that a team is often the preferred choice of this sort. Personally, I am all for it. Always better to work with talented company around than on one's lonesome." He may be perfectly capable working on his own, but he will admit that he does not enjoy it all that much when that is the case. At the end of the day, he feels more comfortable with another watching his back on a particularly hairy contract. Even if his back does not need watching all that often. Besides, it at least guarantees conversation with someone other than himself and that's always a plus.
"Not the most cheery of locations, is it?" he agrees with the man as his gaze follows the dripping water not so far from them up to one of many cracks in the roof. "Still, it does make sense to meet here, I suppose."

Another man enters, this one answering his early request for refreshments, although sadly not the sort he had envisioned. "My my, a fellow comes well prepared, it seems." He nods to the whisky man. "Nice to meet you, but I do believe I'll pass as well. Hard to rule out the possibility of working straight away at this point and it would not make for the best first impression among new faces. The night is only halfway done, after all."

Turning back to the first man, he smiles warmly and genuinely, but only briefly. "Toby. A pleasure again. So only a bank in Norway? Perhaps not who I had mistaken you for then." He goes silent for a moment before nodding to himself. "Although I suppose my trip to Norway would have been a considerable time ago anyway now that I think on it. Oh well, think nothing of it. Ahh, a Brisbane man?" The smile returns for longer this time. "Wonderful city. Passed through there some time ago, but I imagine the beauty remains the same. A shame this business brings you so far from home, no?"
He reaches into the sweet bag and produces a number of grape jelly beans, of which he hands over to Toby. "As for me? I call Devon my home, back in England. But I get out and about quite often, which often leads me into places like this."

The jelly bean bag is offered to the newcomer as well. "Didn't catch your name, Mr. Whisky?"

Toby Philips - Detroit MI, Inside Warehouse

"I try not to spend that much time in cities I work in. I do like to vacation somewhere cold. Stockholm and Amsterdam are my usual hang outs." He looked down as put away the water bottle and takes a grape jelly bean and starts to chew it. "Never been to Devon, might not have what I normally travel for." Leaning forward, he looked over the bare table and sighed. It usually was going to be some sort of event just that night, unless they were going to have to hold up here. Toby found himself looking for places to bunk comfortably and not finding any just shook his head.

"Willy, you have the sound of someone who has done all this before haven't you? I would hope this isn't where we have to bunk. Brisbane is alright, it has a lot of sun at least." Toby said distractedly as he looked around. "I haven't been back for almost a year, put everything in storage and just started traveling abroad. I am going back might buy a house, I don't have much, but it does what I need it to do."

William

"In and out sort of man?" he says to Toby. "I can appreciate that. Not much reason to often stick around once a contract's fulfilled, right?" He begins to rock back and forth on the back legs of his chair. "There is not much in Devon, that's a certainty. Nice scenery though and you can't quite beat home. Stockholm and Amsterdam are lovely too, but it has been some time since I was last in both. And I'll gladly take some of that Brisbane sun right now. I'd have happily left the rain back in England." He can't resist himself with the sweet bag still in his hand and has a treat of a few beans as he talks.

"This certainly isn't my first rodeo, you have that right. Although it is my first official contract with this client. I take it then that this particular arrangement is all fairly new to you? Not your usual sort of job that is?" He looks over Toby again with a more calculating eye this time, making various mental notes that will most likely be forgotten by himself within the hour. "Anyway," he says with nonchalant shrug. "I wouldn't worry about having to spend the whole night here. Someone will be along shortly, I'm sure. I imagine they intend for us all to gather first and address us all at once." Simply looking at the still vacant chairs, he makes the logical guess that five more are yet to come. "It tends to be their way, so I hear. Judging by our seats, there will be a fair number of us."

"It's Stone. Jack Stone. And I'll gladly take a few jelly beans, as well as your shares of my drink."

Stone takes the jelly beans, and drops them in his flask. (Good thing today was Vodka day!) Then he takes three generous swigs of his whiskey bottle, before replacing it in his briefcase.

"Trust me, if this job is anything like my last few, you'll wish you had a few shots of liquid courage in you by the end of the night."

Taking a seat, Stone fiddles with his watch. The top cover flips up, and a pleasant female voice can be heard. "Hello agent, what can I do for you?"

"Hello beautiful, I would love it if you could run facial recognition matches on my associates here and tell me who I'm working with. Just basic searches, don't dig too deep. After all, we're all friends here."

Turning to the other two at the table, he launches into his introduction.

"So, while she works, why don't we get to know each other better? I'm Jack Stone, agent of PRIDE."

Lt. Det. Roy Cooper, Retired

The rain felt somehow oddly fitting. Roy Cooper had always preferred it to be raining on nights like this one. When he had to go see about a new case, or he was working on something big, or even just had an important meeting with brass, rain always made it felt right. Maybe it was just the little bit of background noise. Maybe it made him feel like he was in an old detective movie, like he was a kid again and daydreaming. He always tried not to think about it too much, though - he thought it better to save the psychoanalysis for witnesses and perps.

Besides, after all that had happened to him...if he dug too deep into his own mind, he might just not come back out again.

His busted-rear end Olds gets parked just outside, the wipers barely keeping up with the rain even when they're running - as soon as the engine shudders itself to a stop the windshield is practically useless to see through. A Marlboro gets smushed in the car's well-used ashtray. After grabbing his briefcase, he's to the door in a few quick strides. Against all odds, his immaculate gray pinstriped suit hardly looks rained-on, let alone soaked like it should be. He paid good money for good suits, and he got his money's worth, for sure.

He quickens his pace. The warehouse looks to him like it's burned-out and dying, like the city it's in. But he hears a bit of chatter. That strikes him as odd - he didn't see enough cars outside to match the number of voices. At least one someone didn't want an obvious link to having come here, is his assumption. Well, he'd just have to see about that.

Roy steps through into the 'waiting room'. Three here, drinks and introductions flying, and talk of jobs. "Well," he says. "At a guess, this isn't fuckin' AA, that's for sure." Then he grins. "Glad I'm not early."

Nick Brophy

Nick's plain little Corolla was parked a couple streets down. He sat in it and watched several people arrive already and step inside the building that he had been instructed to go to. Looks like recruitment was for more than one position. He lights a cigarette and takes a couple long pulls. He wasn't thrilled with the rain, especially this far out. It meant that if anything went weird then running through the streets would be that much more unpleasant. I guess he'd just have to hope that nothing took a turn for the dangerous. He patted the pockets of his rain coat for his belongings, making sure everything was there. Pack of cigarettes, check. Wallet, check. Recorder, check. Leave the piece in the car, this is a job introduction not a shootout. Anything smells fishy it'll be his feet that'll get him out, not guns.

He pulled down the brim of his ballcap to keep some of the rain from blowing on his face. He stopped and considered the door for a moment, looked left and right, then took one last drag before flicking the butt away. It made a gentle hiss as it hit a puddle. The door opened to a cavernous building, a lonesome table, and several people standing around in animated conversation. Looks like that's where we're supposed to be. He picks one of the unoccupied chairs and hangs his rumpled raincoat over the back.

"Hey. Evening." he says pleasantly to the first person to acknowledge his presence.

I am Centurion Titus Polonius. And the only trouble I've had is that nobody seem to realize that I'm their superior officer.

Nathan Reyes

Pulling alongside the curb in front of the dilapidated warehouse, the driver turned around to look quizzically at Nathan Reyes. "You sure this is the place?" Nathan glanced at his phone, and nodded his head. He pulled his backpack and a duffel bag out of the cab, paid the driver, and then glanced around for a moment. There were two other cars parked, but none of them looked like the kind of vehicles he had seen Warehouse agents driving. Unless that was the whole point. But still, it seemed as if he was not the only new hire at this meeting. He hustled inside as the rain began to soak through his light jacket.

Glancing around the cavernous room, Nathan didn't see anything too out of the ordinary. There were 5 other men there already, more than he had expected. Walking towards the table, Nathan drops his duffel bag on the ground with a clunk and holds out his hand to shake with the nearest man. "I'm Nathan Reyes. I assume you're all heare for the, uh, meeting?"

"Yer drat right this isn't AA. Leave that crap at the door. I'm still keeping straight til I know that we aren't going to have to run a job tonight." Toby said slipping back into his seat. Turning back to Willy, he made a few motions, "I am use to my own team, little more leeway. That way the client and me have a bit of an understanding. Anyone flips, no one knows what is going down." I said looking at the parade of people coming in and Mr. Whisky going into his lap.

"Mr AA, this is Willy" with a jab to William, "Mr. Whisky, also Agent Stone" Motioning to Jack Stone with a finger, finally, the last jab,"I'm Toby." He nodded to everyone and unzipped his leather jacket, and leaning foward.

"So whats your story, Mr. Trenchcoat." Toby said to Nick as he gave his curt greeting. "Rines, nice to meet you, It feels like we are filling up the seats at the very least." Toby finishes as Nathan gives his impromptu greeting.

"I dunno, it looks like it still could be," quips Cooper. He sits down in one of the questionable-looking chairs and takes a light swig from the offered whiskey. "Thanks. Rude to turn down a drink, I always thought." He offers a quick nod and half-wave to Jack, William, Nathan and Nick in turn. Toby instead gets a question. "So everyone's on nickname-basis already? I must really not be early."

"Nah man, better to know what is going on. When I did jobs, we had a rule, no names at all. So you come up with nicknames. Unless the client is a real dick and insists you go by colors. Mr. Green, etc. Guess who was always Mr. Black. I'll give you one guess." Snapping the gum in his mouth he looked around. "Nicknames make it easier encase it becomes an issue that whoever is listening has no idea who you are talking about. Like Mr. Whisky here, and you Mr. AA. Your on the wagon in my head. There, I know who you are, and no one besides us six will have any idea what I am talking about."

"Now that is just my professional experience, so take that or leave it. I'm not going to take offense anyway." Toby said leaning back a bit, stuffing both hands in his pockets. Finally coming out with another stick of gum that is unceremoniously jammed in his mouth with the current stick.

He listens intently. Or pretends to listen intently. Or maybe he doesn't need to seem to be listening intently to be listening intently, but does anyway. One way or another he lets Toby do his spiel, then grins. "We're in a fuckin' Tarantino movie now, got it. Make sure no one loses an ear," says Roy. More seriously, he adds, "poo poo, if it works for you, I don't know. I ain't wearing a goddamn badge, so I ain't gonna worry about the rest."

"In my experience there usually isn't a bizarre survey for employment in criminal organizations. Besides, this is real life and Tarantino is a goddamn hack. Watch some Scorsese, that's how you run a crime family." Nick pulls a cigarette from his pack. "This", gesturing with the unlit cigarette to the giant empty room "does not feel like a heist, unless it's someone who's seen too many movies. Fell in love with that cloak and dagger bullshit. Perfectly honest, I have no idea what the hell it's about but I think we're past the interview stage. Nick Brophy by the way." Nick politely waves away any proffered whiskey, it doesn't smell like scotch so he's not interested. "Mr. Trenchcoat's pretty good, I like it. Better than what I had on the force. I worked a few years with Boston PD, enough to vest in the pension then go back to being self-employed."

"Anyone mind if I smoke?" He puts the cigarette in his mouth but leaves it unlit and dangling.

William

He watches curiously as Stone reveals some impressive piece of technology of which he seems more than happy to flaunt in front of them. A chuckle is given to the thought of a facial recognition search of him. Just what might show up for the man? He has to admit that he's interested to find out, even if it may well lead to certain questions being asked of him that he would prefer to save for later in their time together. Still, he does not argue against the man's intentions or move to stop him.
As the minutes pass and the chairs around them begin to fill, he smiles and nods to those who enter and extends his hand out to those who do the same. "William Palgraves. A pleasure to be working with you all, I'm sure."

The talk of movies pretty much passes him by, he can't fully say that he's aware of most of the films the others mention. Perhaps he should work on that in the future, help him blend in more. With the talk of nicknames though, he pipes up. "In my experience with these sorts of contracts, it is difficult to work with someone who prefers an alias to their name. Hard to trust a man to work well with you when he will not even trust you with his real name. So, I do believe calling me William will be just fine, thank you, Jack Stone." He shakes his head with a deep sigh. "'Jelly-Belly...'" He pops another bean into his mouth.

Something Stone mentioned does rattle in his head for a while as he tries to pinpoint what sounded so strange about it. The realization soon comes to him then with a snap of his fingers. "Ah! Mr. Stone, you mentioned you work for PRIDE, yes? If I do recall correctly, they and our employer here are the most hated of enemies, unless that has changed since I last looked at it? May I ask what brings an agent such as yourself to work with the 'enemy', as it were?" He laughs and winks at the man. "Planning to bring them down from the inside, eh?"

"Well well, someone here is well-read," Stone says, with a grin. "No, no, believe me. They are well aware of who I am and who I work for. In fact, you might say that's the entire reason I'm here! Surely you're aware that in the world of espionage, allies and enemies are terms that can be very fluid, yes? They have their agenda, we have ours, and my being here... it's an attempt to see if we might be able to line those two up."

Under his breath, Stone adds, "Doesn't hurt when they've got you tied up in a chair, either."

Fighting poverty...one bum at a time.

Geoffrey Burke - Warehouse

Doctor Burke pulled his rent-a-car onto the warehouse's street, hoping he had the right one this time. His phone's GPS had already gotten him lost once, and he had the sneaking suspicion that some of the street signs in this part of town had been tampered with. This place was sketchy, to say the least. But a little sketchiness was to be expected, taking a job like this, Geoffrey figured. He just hoped he wasn't making a mistake quitting his job at the university.

He eventually spotted what he was fairly certain was the warehouse, a belief reinforced by all other cars out front. He parked the rent-a-car nearby, giving the car's door handle a cautious tug before heading inside.

Inside was not much better than the outside, Burke found; it looked like a great place to catch some tetanus. Geoffrey cleared his throat and addressed the men assembled inside, "Excuse me, is this...", before reciting the warehouse's address.

William

"Ahh," he says to Stone, nodding as the man explains. "A lot of pressure riding on you for the betterment of your company then, one could say. Allies and enemies do tend to change regularly, it's true. And two powerful enemies becoming allies can be truly something to fear. Better for business all around. It's nice to see that even our current employer and PRIDE can understand that these days." The man's soft spoken line about the chair tying perks up the side of his mouth, although it is not the strangest start to a business relationship that he has heard of. "Anyway, I look forward to working with a PRIDE agent. I've heard interesting things about them. But when you've been around this line of work as much as I have, you hear a great deal about many interesting things, I'm sure you'll agree."

To the new arrival at the door, he says. "Yes yes," waving the man inside. "You're in the right place. Take a seat and tell us your name perhaps. I'm William. Whisky? Jelly bean?"

Burke

"Thank god.", said a relieved Burke as he took the last chair, "I'm Doctor Geoffrey Burke, pleased to meet you, William. I'll have a jellybean, if you don't mind." He decided to pass on the offer of whiskey, professionalism demanded it. Besides, he had probably done enough drinking for the day on the flight out of California. Geoffrey appraised what he assumed were other potential employees. They definitely were professionals, though none of them seemed to be academics like himself. Perhaps one of them had some actual details on this job?

"So, do any of you know anything about this job?", Burke asked, "Because all I know is that they want me researching what am I am fairly certain is code for 'weird poo poo.'"

William

"A doctor! Wonderful. and we already seem to have two former police officers, as well. Quite the crew we are assembling here. I myself am a qualified medical doctor, if you can believe it. But it has been some time since I practiced, I have to admit." A strange thing to admit, given his own appearance gives no hint of being over the age of thirty. "What is your field of expertise, if I may ask?" He passes over the bag of jelly beans for Dr. Burke to help himself.

"'Weird poo poo' indeed. I've done this sort of thing before and I do believe that the 'weird poo poo' will be the bulk of our time working together. Hope none of you have a fear for what might go bump in the night, because I'm sure we'll be bumping back. As for specifics, we are still waiting on a representative of our employer to make themselves known and give us the full briefing."

Nick Brophy

"Dr. Burke, Nick Brophy" he says extending his hand. "As far as I know we're all pretty in the dark about the details."
He pulls a lighter out of his pocket and lights up his cigarette. He takes deep inhale and then casually exhales the smoke.

"I didn't walk away with any jewelry either Hartford, I was in it mostly for the health insurance that you can vest in three. The Union's got mooks like us covered at least that much. Hey William, pass me one of them candies."
He takes another puff on his cigarette.
"Scorsese is fuckin' fun, he knows how to write a dramatic fuckin' screenplay. You ever seen Raging Bull? 'Course you have, they don't let you outta the academy without seeing it. William, you ever seen Raging Bull?"

William

"Of course. Here." The jelly beans are passed over to Nick. At this rate he'll need to break out the second bag that is covertly hidden within his coat. Hopefully he will not be needing the third. "Raging Bull... No, I never had the pleasure of watching the film, I'm afraid. Did see the man once though. Lovely chap. Talented boxer too." After a brief pause, he rubs his nose and adds. "So I'm told."

Nathan Reyes

Nathan shakes hands with Doctor Burkes, and then glances at William with an appraising look. "A medical doctor, huh? I'm qualified as a paramedic, I was in the Air Firce, Pararescue. I can do some basic meatball surgery too. What's your specialty?"

He ignores the whiskey, that could wait until some down time. The Warehouse had enough reasons to be wary of hum, without drinking on the job.

Father Frank

Rainwater drips off the priest's wide-brimmed hat before sliding down his raincoat to the gravel, some of it going by way of his black leather briefcase. Father Frank did his best to walk with purpose and conviction even when he was totally unsure of his course of action, and this time is no different. He enters the Warehouse with such confidence, throwing his luggage down on the table to announce his presence, as if the drippy figure clad in dark fabrics striding in wasn't enough,

"Evening, gentlemen," he says, as if expecting to see everyone there, "Sorry I'm late." He removes his hat, revealing a head of very short, very receding red hair, "You've already made your introductions, I see. Don't worry about me. I'm just getting settled." He opens his raincoat, revealing a black shirt and clerical collar.

"Hmm... unless my vision is doubling already, I count eight people and seven chairs. The last time this happened to me, I ended up being a bit disappointed about introducing myself to everyone."

William

"A paramedic, you say?" Nathan's appraising look is returned with one of his own. "Seems we're learning a lot of each other already. How marvelous. Me, I was just the typical sort. Did some work in a hospital for a time before moving onto other things that held my interest more. I'm fairly adept at surgery too, although I learnt most of that in the armies." He catches himself and corrects, remembering his audience. "Sorry. The army."

The newcomer dramatic entrance causes him to sit up, wondering if this is the person they wait for. With the reveal of the man's clerical collar, an eyebrow is raised. An odd thing to see a priest here, but certainly not the strangest thing he expected to find. "Welcome. You've hardly missed much. Just exchanging pleasantries. Jelly bean?" He holds out the sweet bag for the priest.

Stone's observation on the seating arrangements grants a nod. "Unless our religious friend here is somehow the company representative we're waiting on, maybe they simply forgot one. Or perhaps they plan a game of musical chairs."

Nathan Reyes

Nathan shakes hands with Father Frank, greeting him warmly. "Pleasure to meet you, Padre".

He smiles at William. "Well, to be honest, army style surgery is probably all we'll need in the field. As long as you can stabilize someone and get them in good enough shape to move'em, then you can get them to whatever specialist they need."

Nathan glances at the chairs, counting in his head. "Huh. It's probably some kind of test, they want to see how we'll react to it. Like in Men in Black, the first one I mean, when they give Will Smith a test and he drags the table over." He peers into the darkness near the walls. "Maybe they have some other chairs stacked up somewhere?"

"You kids sure are a talky bunch," Roy announces suddenly. "Probably know more than I should about half of you already, and I haven't even asked a drat question yet. Shiiit. The Father's probably smart for getting here last, like that." Eying Nathan, he adds, "Oh, I'm sure they've got some kinda weird-rear end test planned, or this little meeting is already part of a test, but I dunno if the...chair situation's all that relevant, you know?"

Burke

Burke took a few jellybeans from the bag before passing it along. "What do I study? Well, my PhD's in Chemistry, but I also have a degree in nuclear physics.", he said before popping a couple of the jellybeans into his mouth. He watched Father Frank come in with interest, wondering what they would need a priest for.
