That's good, right? That sounds like a lax mission. It isn't. This specific base is constantly under attack by Imperials. My guess is that nobody wants to guard it anymore, so they pushed it to us. Hey, let's try to make the best of this! Like that new guy. He's working hard as we speak. Who? Oh, you mean 58. I think his name is Shin? He's been moving stuff all day. He's a man of few words. *Amy walks up to Shin* I see you're working hard, Shin! Do you want to take a break? Hmm, such an unexpected favor. However, I have not yet finished the mission entrusted to me. In order keep my focus on the task, please do not bother me again. Uh, s-sorry then.... *Shin leaves* And he's throwing away a rare opportunity for rest. Um, it's okay. I was the one that disturbed him in the first place. He's as stiff as they come, almost like our dear captain. I'm tempted to educate him on how to...loosen up. Don't think he's into that. That just makes things more interesting! *Time passed* Thanks for all the hard work! Do you want some tea? I must go to guard duty now. Liquid Intake must be measured and reserved. Oh...r-right. Hey now, where are your manners to turn down a gift from a girl? Which is more important, manners or the mission? I think the answer is quite clear. Good-bye. *leaves* Maybe it's just a cultural difference. How do you mean? I heard he was born his mother's country. And where's that? I think it's some eastern island nation, even farther east than the Empire. That's quite a ways from home. And the cultural difference is starting to make sense now. *Time passes* Serge Liebert, pleased to meet you. .... .... .... ...So, Shin-- An enemy?! Where?! No enemy, sorry. Being always alert is good, but you'll wear yourself out over time. Do not worry. Since I have been assigned to this job, this camp will be protected at all times. That's...some dedication, I guess. Is Zen where your from? No, it's a way to sharpen your spirit and train your military senses. I see. That's an interesting way of thinking. If you ask me, the culture of this squad is interesting. Though you're fighting for your country and the princess, there's still emphasis on etiquette between squadmates. It's something foreign to me. Is it really done that differently in your homeland? If the monarch tells its people to die, we have no choice but to comply. That is the law we abide by. Wow.... However, it seems that mindset isn't applied in this country. It's jarring, to say the least. Hmph. .... .... You...are quite silent. That puts my heart at peace. I'm just not a talker. I see. I noticed that you seem to have the warrior spirit, and know of death's grasp. That is why you are so calm. It puts me at ease. Shin... How did you end up in the Nameless? ...I came here with my father after my mother died, and traveled to his homeland of Gallia. It was supposed to be only a month, but the war started soon after. I joined the Militia, but because of the different blood flowing through me, I was assigned to this squad. Unfortunately, that's how it is here. No. Hmm? And because of that, I am in servitude of Princess Cordelia. My life and loyalty, all of it exists solely for her now. That is why I do not harbor ill will. ..... It is possible I will never adapt to a Gallian lifestyle. But even so, I will not give less than my entire fate for the princess. I do not know any other way to live. In that case, you don't need to change much. Just...pay a little better attention to those around you. It might make staying here more pleasant. What do you mean? Everyone was on their own, never caring for each other's survival... However, that all changed when Kurt became our captain. We started becoming a real squad, a group that trusted each other. .... That's why I feel it's good for you to get better along with the squad. Sorry if I'm pushing it too far. Do not apologize. It is true that's a mindset I'd never consider before. I will try, at the very least. Shin sketch

A friend pointed this thread out to me so I thought I'd chime in. I'm actually the main dialogue translator for the VC3 translation patch so all the bad writing you're getting in the patch is all my fault (the game mechanic stuff was done by someone else)! This was my first time ever translating something or even writing anything remotely resembling dialogue/narrative so that's probably the reason why everything sounds so stiff. Part of this may also be that I translated primarily from a Chinese translation patch, so some stuff may have been lost in that transition too. I still have all the tools to build a new patch and I might get around to it at some point in time, but not for a while. I'm pretty sure that all the victory quote errors are due to an off by one error where I missed a line break.

Because of this base's importance, we have to be constantly alert on enemy attacks. Yes, sir! Right. The current silence makes it easier to notice any sudden disturbance. True, as the saying goes that quiet can be too quiet. But no matter the assault, this base shall have my life to sacrifice. I appreciate the dedication, but I don't like people that cheapen their lives. Captain? Members of this squad are not to think about death, but how to help the squad the most without loss. I see...it seems I still have some cultural clashes to discuss. What do you mean? In my country, serving the monarch means you've given up all other desires and rights of life. That is how I was raised. And do you think death is something to revere? Death or life is nothing to the philosophy of Wu. Shin.... That's some culture.... What happened? There's a large Imperial detachment heading towards the base! As expected. Everyone, prepare for battle now! This may be a difficult battle.... But this vessel of the princess will succeed in this mission! Forest time, with the objective being killing a specific heavy tank. I don't know why this mission has 6 turns for S rank, because capturing the very easy-to-reach left corner camp.... Gives you immediate access to a cliffside rear-attack on the objective. I mean sure, there's a couple Gunners on the way but Gloria+ace weapon lets her headshot them easily. Shaving off 3 turns might be a new record for me. Roger that. Sound the retreat! Yes, sir! Shin! Fall back, we're retreating! No! What are you doing?! I gave the order to retreat! The monarchy has demanded that this base is to be defended. That is what I will do til my last breath! *runs* Captain, requesting to back him up! Denied. I'm not having two idiots die today. But...if we don't help him-- Alfons, how's that request? All clear. They're on their way. All right, then. All units, charge with the tank in front! Captain, what's going on? We're backing up the central militia forces! You did?! I I requested back-up before the operation started. A squad actually responded to us! Thank goodness.... Let's hurry up, now! Don't waste this opportunity! *After the battle* We managed to protect the base with the help of the central forces. As a side bonus, we managed to save a stubborn guy as well. Rgh.... Now then. Tell me why you ignored my order to retreat. I did it because the monarchy ordered it, and she is the most important of Gallia. Explain. Is serving the monarchy and her land, and my life is the price for doing that. You serve Gallia, yet ignore my orders? It is only because the monarchy is where my loyalty lies. This guy isn't making sense. He's certainly amazing to still be this stubborn.... I'm understanding more and more on how he ended up here.... I served the princess with my all, I have no regrets. Hold on, Shin. If you serve the princess, then you serve the captain as well. And why is that? Because the princess orders the army, and Kurt acts on behalf of her as the leader of the Nameless. .... Of course. Such an obvious thing. By trying to complete her overall mission, I ignored my duties to help the squad that she placed me in. Such dishonor. For committing such a violation, I shall invoke forgiveness by Seppuku! Wait, what are you doi-put that sword down! This must be done! Kurt! Please stop him! Shin, I order you to stop trying to kill yourself! ...If that is your order, I have no choice but to comply. From here on, you will obey Gallian military law. This is how you will show your loyalty to princess Cordelia! Is that understood? Sir! Loyalty: Increase defense and accuracy when near allies. Shin art page

Riela's fragment is a bit different than the others. Hers unlocks automatically after chapter 4, and doesn't unlock/replace a new Potential. However, her fragment mission does have an ace weapon so there's still gameplay benefits. Yes. It seems we have to rescue a village taken over by Imperials without casualty. It's a tricky mission because of that. I can't imagine how we'll do it... Any word from the captain? Only that he's been planning all day. He's barely slept at all since the orders came in. Keeping tabs on him? Huh? I...I'm just making sure he's fine! Hmm... *A moment passed* Sure? Good, because I've always had some interest in you. Of course, I mean it in an analytical sense. It's only now that I am comfortable to ask. O...kay? Huh? And that hair color...was that inherited as well? Um...well.... I wouldn't know any of that...since I'm an orphan. You are? My apologies for bringing it up. ...It's just that you appear to have distinct features that resemble the Valkyria of legends. I assumed that meant you were from a noble family. Noble or not, abandoning a child says enough about what they felt about me. That's true..... As far as my features go, they're something that other people have come to hate. Really? Even Yggdists that worship the Valkyria? They're just legends that no one's seen with their own eyes. No one's going to think better of me because of that. Isn't that the only reason you're even interested in me? The only thing that my features do is make me stand out. It was the same when I joined the militia. There was a guy in my squad who also became interested in me. But then soon after, that squadron was completely wiped out and I was reassigned. And it kept repeating over and over. Soon, I was called a lot of things. ""A Bad Omen", "Bringer of Bad Luck", an "Imperial Spy".... "The Angel of Death." The only thing that's kept with me all these years is my misfortune. Everyone kept dying around me.... The captain. Yep! Let's go more personal. Is there anything you enjoy? Um...I like...cow milk! My grandma always said, "If you want a strong body, you should drink plenty of milk!" Yes, it seriously helps in various aspects.... She's right! I've never gotten sick, and I'm plenty strong. What about dreams or goals? Hmm...I want to find a place called home, I guess? I just want to be somewhere where I belong. And right, that's the Nameless. Is that so...I see. Thank you for taking your time with me. No problem, but...I hope one day your interest in me goes beyond my hair and eyes. Don't worry. I believe that day is coming soon enough. Really? Awesome! It's because of that mission coming up. He's been racking his head on how to save the villagers. It's not him that should be worried about. Riela should be the bigger concern. I guess so. She's a strong gal, but still quite the worry-wart. It's hard to imagine that cheery and energetic girl was called "The Angel of Death." It's a pity. I only wish I had a girl like that back in my hotel days. Hotel...wait, just what kind of business were you running?! Hey! What are you talking about? Nothing! Nada! Zip! Seriously, you don't need to know. Eh? Come on, tell me! We were just talking about how you're great at making men happy. Hmm? Can it, granny! Really? You're offering me a job? Of course. I'd say you're the type that money follows well. Will you shut up?! Don't drag her into this! Um, don't I need previous job experience? Oh believe me, you're already ahead in the natural depa- LALALALALALALA Eh? What for? Alfons! Hey buddy and pal, why don't you take Riela someplace else? Someplace not here right now, very right now. Uh...are you sure? Very sure! Super sure! Get out! I...okay. Tsk! *Later that day* You mean when I was in the militia? It was only because you kept surviving that it caught my attention. .... Sorry if I sounded like I had evil intentions. Researching "interesting" coincidences is just a hobby of mine. Okay, then what is it? All of them suffered devastating defeats where no one should've survived. It's less that you're bad luck, and more that it's a miracle you've survived each event. ....! But then again, a miracle 5 times in a row really can't still be called that. So the big question is, how did you survive? I honestly don't know. Or lying in some underbrush....or below a pile of corpses.... My apologies. I didn't mean to bring up those memories. However, I would gladly appreciate if you could spare any information you remember. ..... *Meanwhile* Captain. It's rare to see you so worried. It's rare to get a mission like this. Is there really no solution to this? There is one, but.... Might I suggest one, as well? We may have come to the same conclusion. Alright. Send a spy to deliberately get caught, then use that to draw the Imperials out of the village. That was my plan as well, but the risk is too large for whoever volunteers. Of course I would do it myself, but who would command the squad in the meantime.... I volunteer. Hmm? I'm also the type to do things on their own. Is that so? I'll consider it. Valerie will be our lead scout for ths mission. Yes, sir. Hold on! I volunteer as well! Hmm? We can get more information with the two of us. That'll make the mission easier, right? Besides, sending Valerie alone is too dangerous! Riela.... No, that would make the plan ineffective. I also don't want her, at the very least, to find out. So what now? Do we decline her request? Not to worry. I'll correct the course once we start the mission. Understood. *Kurt and Valerie stopped whispering* Riela, your request's been granted. Everyone else, prepare for combat on my mark! *Later* As expected, we can't charge in without risking destruction of the village in the process. I wonder what Kurt will come up with? Right now, we still have a job to do. He'll figure out a plan once we return with our scouting report. Okay. Riela, can you scout the east side? I'll cover the west to make this quicker. You got it! *Time passes* The west is all clear. How was it on yours? Good. I got my report ready. Right. Let's get back, then. *Riela leaves ahead, with Valerie still in the forest* If only everything was this easy.... *At the village* Sir! We discovered enemy scouts in the west entrance! Good work. Gather your forces and prepare for battle. Prevent their ambush attempt! Yes, sir! *Back at the Nameless camp* We're back! Scouting report? There's 3 entrances and a tank.... *Explosions heard at a distance* Hmm? Where's that gunfire coming from? Captain! The enemy is approaching us! Already? What? Oh no! Did they follow us? I estimate the enemy is a small squadron with a tank.... Riela? What's wrong? This is all my fault! *Runs away* Riela! Where are you going?! *Chases* Riela, wait! This isn't your fault! Sorry, captain. It seems leaving her in the dark had the opposite effect. Never mind that. We have to get Riela back, first! Yes, sir! *A moment passes* I'll protect everyone with my life! HAAAAAAAAAAA! Riela, wait! Calm down! Kurt? What are you doing here? Hurry and run away! Will you just listen for a second? This is all part of the plan! Eh? Our squadron is already set to ambush their flank on both sides. Our plan was to lure them out with bait so the village wouldn't be damaged. I...really? I'll explain in detail later. Right now, wipe out the enemy! Back in the forest, with Riela and Kurt holding down the main camp while everyone else is trying to kill the enemy in 4 turns. Someone tell me how the gently caress did this shot miss. Fun thing, if a character's accuracy is max, it basically has no dot as seen by Serge boosted by multiple effects. Grass foils me again But I got a bunch of upgraded characters now, and yet another absurd ace weapon for Shocktroopers. It's actually better than the first enemy ace sub-machine gun, if you can believe it. I'm so glad everyone's alive! Riela, it's my fault. This fake-out was planned between Valerie and I. We both thought it was the best plan to destroy the enemy without civilian casualty. That's why the enemy found me out so easily. So in other words, you sent us just to be caught? It was Valerie's suggestion, so she volunteered. Then you joined up as well, and she said to keep the plan going. Because I told him not to. But why? The plan was mine, therefore all the risk should be mine as well. However, it didn't feel right to ignore your request, either.... Unfortunately, that led to a misunderstanding which was our fault. I figured that Riela would take the mission no matter what, and Valerie understood that. However, it almost had the opposite effect. My apologies. It's okay. I'm just happy you even considered my feelings. I never worry about these things anymore, because I already know my place. That's why I give it my all, no matter what! I certainly got that when you ran off to protect us. You're certainly more stubborn than I anticipated. I'm sorry for almost ruining the plan, though.... But it didn't. And we all learned something from it in the end. Right! You can count on me anytime! This ace weapon deals 4 more damage per shot than the other ace weapon, is more accurate, and even has a weird ammo-reduction status effect. As if Shocktroopers weren't already the best class, they're also the first to have multiple ace weapons available. Riela art page Hahahahahha goddamnit

Yeah, by the looks of it it's not so much Riela's fault that she's in the Nameless as it is an issue with the regular army and the people who command it (yet again). Presumably someone noticed that soldiers were spreading rumours about her, and instead of actually addressing or verifying said rumours he shipped her off to the Nameless to avoid her dropping morale by her presence, or he actually believed them and had her transfered to avoid getting the squad killed. Either way, not really a stellar job as a commander but that seems to be about par for the course in Gallia's army.
