Whatever they are most vocally against, is probably what's just under the surface.

I think its that they feel such shame about having feelings that they were brought up thinking to be horrible, that they try to "make up for it" by being super-tough on everyone else who acts on such feelings. Kind of like some immigrants are much more nationalistic regarding their home-country than the people who still live there, or converts to a religion being more hardline about it than people who were brought up in that religion. Its overcompensation because they feel like they have something to prove or make up for.
