I have 2 questions about the Quiverfulls, and associated fundies. both are yucky. 1) How do they actually have sex? Considering it is sinful, and impure et al, do they do it old school jewish style through a sheet with a hole? Given the level of repression I can't imagine either of them enjoy it at all, and if they do, propably feel bad for enjoying it. I am too much of a gentleman to mention the gaping maw that is a vagina that has birthed 19 babies in so many years. 2) How does one go a-courting? Where do they meet 'suitable' partners? And how do they even ask each other out if, as I assume, they aren't allowed to associate with members of teh opposite sex? So then when the parents have negotiated a suitable match, and you go on your chaperoned pizza date where you aren't allowed to touch, lets say you don't like the other person. Are you allowed to break up? Do the parents have to do it for you? The whole lifestyle baffles and confounds me. I truly am unable to understand how they function in modern society. I am also deeply saddened and angered by the abusive, cultish, misogynistic, homophobic, insular madness that they brainwash little kids into.

With the Bristol Palin article, and Fox interview I think I understand the mindset of the defenders. It isn't the "I was forgiven by Jebus", and "women are tempting harlots, even at 5" stuff, (although there is a lot of that in there). This is what the Duggars themselves think, and it is horribl;e beyond words. I think their defenders/apologists are more "Dem evil Libruls!!!!" Given that the older daughter is refusing to 'court', (in order to protect the younger girls, or because she is gay, or for whatever else reason), I am wondering what happens to 'old maids' in this community. What happens to the girls that grow older than marrying age but don't find someone to subjugate themselves to totally? Do they have to stay with their parents for eternity? Also with the boys. This is going to sound crazy, but I will defend Josh here, (very slightly and very provisionally) You see if he had grown up in a house without the misogyny, sexual repression, and religious dogma, then he would still be an arsehole. But had he grown up in that house, he would have been able to talk to/look at women who weren't his sisters at the age of 14. He would have been able to have a crafty wank to a lingerie catalogue when he felt horny. He (hopefully), would have been taught a measure of responsibility and that everything bad wasn't demons/women/the outside worlds fault. He still would have been a useless conservative manbaby that cheats on his wife with strippers, but that is where it would have ended. I was thinking about this. 19 kids takes a heavy financial toll. Especially when one of the parent's aren't allowed to work because of their sinful, inferior gender. Losing that TLC paycheck would have been a huge blow, even for a tax-exempt church like the Duggar family is. They'll always have a fanbase of crazy fundies ready to throw money at them, but without the TV show, those fundies will quickly forget about them and throw their money away on the next Creflo E Dollar, or snake oil salesman that catches their eye. So I could see how they were desperate for their molestation show to go on. Perhaps JimBob could make money on the personal appearance/speaking circuit, but that racket is pretty full already and after all of this I reckon there would be few, if any, places that would book him.

As bad as I feel for it, I have a smidgen of sympathy for the Duggars and their ilk. Because reading about 'blanket training', and the 'keep smiling' poo poo, they are constantly suffering through an inner hell where if they let teh happy facade drop for a second they will be punished, (they are probably also beating themselves up for committing the sin of unhappiness), and are so terrified to do or think anything, anything other than what they are told, that they are paralysed with fear, self loathing, and repressed desires. Add in a bucketful of fundie Christian crazy, the insane sexual mores that they live under, and a pinch of isolation then you get truly hosed up individuals. How in the name of merciful gently caress do they survive, let alone function in the outside world? This is a legitimate question, because I cannot see them doing so without major mental collapse. This is why they huddle together in incestuous, (Josh Bob), groups and marry within the community and stay at home etc. If they are women tyhen they aren't allowed outside inm the first place, but for the men too, it's safer amongst your own when you don't know what to do, and are scared of doing anything other than what you have known. So I feel bad for them, coz this is no way to live a life. To have your choices and your agency stripped from you, and to be imprisoned in a community that, (if you are a woman), regards you as a baby mill and property, less valuable than reputation. So, and I know this is drawing a long long bow and I am giving them far too much credit and giving them sympathies that they don't deserve, but I think that the Dillard's paid South American vacation, (sorry missionary work), is a good thing for them. They get to see people outside their community, people of other cultures and communities. Hell, even learning Spanish will force them to think differently about the world. I mean gently caress the way they got other people to pay for it, and gently caress the way they are going to sneer at the locals and tell them, "You aren't the proper brand of Christian". But it may change their lives and open their eyes, which can only be a good thing.
