As the summer hits its peak, the battle for Stalingrad is just heating up.

We've nearly secured all the land west of the Donets, and will likely break through by taking Rostov soon. A more important task will be finding a way across the river to begin the main assault on the city. In the north, we're doing a good job clearing out enemy units, and are now ready to move forward over the Don. Even the southern force stands to make some progress thanks to a failed Russian counterattack.

Axis Turn 5: July 15, 1942
Clear(dry)

We try to take advantage of the enemy's mistake at Novorossik, but the city repels our attack. At least we reduced their good infantry along the riverside.

Heavy bombardment from the artillery and unhindered bombing runs make for an easy capture of Rostov.

We demolish the remains of the initial Soviet front line, and roll the troops forward.

Allied Turn 5: July 15, 1942

Possibly we moved a bit too quickly, as several of our units are exposed to enemy fire. One unit of Rumanian infantry is lost.

One of the best Soviet tank units blocks our first attempt to gain a bridgehead over the Donets.

Using air support we suppress the enemy armor, clear out Konstaninovsk, and make a quick run to capture Tsymiank.

Voronezh is going to be a hard city to capture. Rossosh will likely fall a lot sooner.

We still have to deal with a tank unit in our way, and the hardy T-34 can prove difficult to knock out.

Allied Turn 6: July 20, 1942

There are still a few enemy planes left, but we've effectively knocked out any capability they have. They can't make a move without being intercepted by one of our patrols.

The T-34 springs into action at Konstaninovsk to block our move on Stalingrad.

Axis Turn 7: July 25, 1942

A crossing is made upriver to get our infantry into the fight. This will also ensure that we won't have more units coming at us from the northwest as we fight our way to the gates of Stalingrad.

We also get a start on the forces defending Voronezh. Some of them are in a very bad position and easy to destroy, but those heavy tanks are probably just going to wait for us to come at them.

Rossosh is nearly encircled. It will almost certainly be captured before the month is out.

Allied Turn 7: July 25, 1942

The enemy does bring some of its tanks out at Voronezh and nearly eliminates the 11th Panzers.

The T-34's at the Donets try to continue to hold us off, but the Stugs prove to be a good match for them. Losses are light.

Our attack over the river draws the attention of the troops entrenched at Millerovo. They leave the safety of the city and attack. It does end up pushing our forces back to the river.

Axis Turn 8: July 30, 1942
clear(dry)

As we spread out southward from Rostov we find the region mostly free of enemy units.

The road to Stalingrad is finally clear. We've also made a good start on Millerovo.

The Bridging Engineers construct a temporary bridge over the Don, and we prepare to cut off Voronezh.

We continue to make steady progress in the far south. The lack of enemy interceptors and (in most places) air defense guns allows us to bomb with impunity.

Allied Turn 8: July 30, 1942

Sensing that they are about to be hit from the flank, the Soviet heavy tanks withdraw to reinforce and recover.

As the month of July comes to an end, we're doing reasonably well with our plan. Voronezh is the only place where things are taking longer than expected, but thanks to the turn toward Millerovo, it's unlikely to affect our chances of taking Stalingrad on an early schedule.

side note: a few of the strategic map shots went missing, and the replay file got corrupted too (the save game is okay). So a handful of the shots in the gifs for this battle will look different, because they were taken mid-turn instead of at the start of the turn.
