I have homework due in seven hours, so let's spend my productive time with another intro commentary: Hikaru's one of the War originals, so I'm only passingly familiar with him. He looks really neat and fun to play as. Anyone who can mess with their stats on any attack is hell to play against, and Hikaru can manage all four. Remember, the core of BattleCON is that each beat, you have a minimum of fifteen options to choose from and fifteen of your opponent's to consider. Anything that opens up your decision space makes those numbers even more intimidating. Range-wise, he's got a fairly standard spread of zeroes down the board with a +1 max range on a single style. However, Trance Style disallows the use of Elemental Tokens, so Hikaru will never get more than 1-2 range on his melee bases. Power's similarly dull: a +1 on two, a -1 on others. This time, it's not Trance that gets the power, so Fire Tokens help out a bit. Priority and Soak/Stun Guard are in similar boats, lacking from the styles but sitting on tokens. Mobility is the real kicker here. Outside of the normal Dash/Burst/Drive trinity, there's just Advancing Style and Palm Strike. Combined with Hikaru's lack of range and we've got a real weakness there. Hikaru's unique base is Grasp but trading the on hit for a mini-Drive and reuse of his gimmick. On most characters a second Priorty 5 base would be wonderful; with Hikaru having his Wind Token it's merely kind of nice. Overall, Hikaru's gameplan looks to be to stand there and trade profitably through mental outmaneuvering. Voco! Voco's an odd one. He's an excellent example of how silly but cool BattleCON can be, especially when you're trying to sell someone else on it. Unfortunately, he's commonly considered to be one of the weakest characters in the game, and not without cause. Voco's basic gimmick is to set Zombie Markers down. These markers provide defense for him and bleeding to the opponent, as long as they're nearby the opponent. Which is problem one: if the opponent likes to move a whole lot, it's a lot harder to make use of his primary shtick. Now, this alone isn't bad. Everyone has good and bad matchups, after all. But then you look at those ranges. Dear god, all that +minimum range. 0, 1, 1-2, 1-2, 2-4, what in the hell? It gets worse, as two of those plus minimum range styles have him advance. It's a frustrating minigame just getting him to land hits, and the new Fate starting positions sure aren't doing Voco any favors. There's also little power, speed, or defense on these styles, just to make it worse. So what the hell do you do with Voco? You Shred. Shred is one of a rare class of X ranged bases. X range is shorthand for "this hits only under specifc circumstances, but always under those", and it's great. Setting up a Shred is relatively easy, and you never have to worry about range. It's decently fast, too. You just have to make sure there's some zombies to hit with, which is doable. Because of its X ranged nature, you don't have to worry about your minimum range screwing it over. You just need there to be a zombie on their space. Using this, Shred is also useful as an opponent manipulation tool, encouraging them to move in places that'll work for you. Voco's mobility isn't all bad, either. His styles are an example of the fighting game tactic of the crossup, where you hop over opponents a bunch in order to mess with their left/right. Advancing 2 when at Range 1 is an excellent portrayal of this, and is a tactic to look out for, on both sides. Voco has an uphill fight against anyone with high mobility, but plays an excellent ranged game, and a little bit of Soak here and there is never a bad thing, especially when it's not directly tied to his attacks. Well, it's just as I said. Against anyone with high mobility, Voco's in trouble. Hikaru, however... Hikaru wants to get close. Voco wants to stay far. This would tend to indicate a basic favor to Hikaru because eventually there's a wall, but that's not the case here. Voco's crossups will ruin Hikaru's day, and without a Fire Token, the incidental Soak will add up and put Voco at a life lead. It's not all Voco's game, though, as Hikaru has a heavy speed advantage, and a wrong call from Voco to dodge and hit will just result in a Geomantic Palm Strike to the groin. This match will not be characterized by life trades, as that implies that the two will be in mutual attacking range more than a couple of times. Instead, it's going to come down to who reads their opponent's potential movements better, and actually scores the hits. I'm looking forward to this.
