All games are good after all. A setting-driven game pretty much has to let the setting evolve even if incrementally in the same way, say, mainline Mario games have to change up block-hopping here and there to keep it fresh. And let's be honest, the combat in the original Fallouts was nothing earth-shattering and while FO3 and NV do some neat things, it's not exactly the main attraction. Though hell, if someone did Fallout Souls, I wouldn't complain either. e: 2 > NV > 1 > 3 bloodychill fucked around with this message at 00:28 on Jun 4, 2015 |

To be fair, there was a time (a long time ago, like 2007 but gamers never let old arguments go) when Fallout fans who criticized Bethesda's direction were the No Mutants Allowed forum veterans who were so spergy, unpleasant and obnoxious (it was between them and Smash fans over who were more toxic in their nerdom) that they dominated the discussion and criticizing Fallout 3 meant you got lumped with them. That's why people who preferred Bethesda's approach get a little hostile when an Black Isle Fallout fan comes along.

I personally think the first two Fallouts have both aged terribly and I haven't gotten very far in either.

Fallout 2 was a disappointment because you couldn't even get past the second door.

They called it Fallout 2 because there are only 2 rooms in the game, since the second door fails to open under any circumstances.

I kinda like to point out that for all the "NMA is insane" stuff that gets thrown around, their opinion is pretty much "Fallout 1, 2, and New Vegas are rad" which is basically what the goon opinion seemed to be at the end.

First time I played Fallout 1 the save that got corrupted and lost 20+ hours of progress. Then the same thing happened with 2 except it was every save. PC gaming at its finest back then.

You obviously don't remember the sheer insane nerd rage they generated between Bethesda buying the IP and Fallout 3 coming out.

Granted there aren't a whole lot of post-apocalyptic RPGs set in Greece or the Philippines or whatever.

bloodychill posted:Real gamers don't quit even when the game is telling them they probably should I'm pretty sure Spore does almost literally everything it can to get you to try to quit before you can really get going, including several game-breaking glitches that will permanently bork your save file by melting the planet, issues trying to install the game (particularly if you are reinstalling it), connectivity problems, erasing half of your creations periodically, and having an extremely boring early-game, but boy did i still play it all the way to the stupid space part, multiple times, for some reason.

Bicyclops posted:The whole point of the series is basically playing Mad Max over and over again. It's like saying "Playing hit the blocks and collect coins over and over again gets old, Mario sucks." This is a bad argument. Because the first Fallout game was post-post-apocalypse. As were 2 and tactics. Society has pretty much revived, it's just rickety because the land is still screwed up. And then Fallout 3 comes out, is hundreds of years after the first game, but the people are less developed and it becomes that boring "help the one group of not glaring assholes." The Alaska dlc was at least neat because it was different than not-mad max. NV is better because there's 3 developed societies in conflict. On another note, the reason people dislike Honest Hearts is because it's on rails when every other dlc and the main game are open.

The reason people dislike Honest Hearts is that the quest design was clearly half-baked. Pretty much all the quests are "visit these locations on the map". (I think this was because of a development time issue)

Joshua Graham is probably one of the most interesting characters in a game full of interesting characters. The fact that he was originally conceived as a catoonishly evil puppy-kicking companion in Van Buren just makes the final guy that much cooler.Hog Inspector posted:i just loving can't stand mormonism Even though they call themselves Mormons it mostly just seems to be generic Christian gospel aside from their proclivity for Utah and their missionary work. Kind of like how the "native" tribes aren't actual ethnic native americans but an amalgam of all the different nomads who were left roaming the woods after the apocalypse.

According to some vague developer statements I think they're supposed to be descended from mormons- someone mentioned that mormons would be well-equipped to survive an apocalypse due to them being so tightly-knit.

Yeah, Fallout 3 is bad in part because it wasn't iterative, it took the general concept and tried to turn it into an Elder Scrolls game. New Vegas gets a lot of good word from fans of the series precisely because it tried to return to the traditional strengths and setting of the series.

Stux posted:ironic because fallout 3 was the best fallout The internet says that Fallout 3 was objectively terrible because it featured the Brotherhood of Steel, had a half-baked companion system featuring a lovable dog companion who died too easily, was way too brown, blew a bunch of money on celebrity voice actors that added nothing to the game, had a bunch of wacky pop-culture and supernatural references that meshed poorly with the bleak post-apocalyptic setting, had a clunky UI that made inventory management a pain, and had a combat system that boiled down to targeting people's head in every encounter. The internet then praises the original Fallout, which is guilty of literally every one of those things.

The game opens with Matthew Perry doing a monologue about the odds not being in your favor while stumbling over 50s slang and makes him your main rival for the main storyline, meanwhile they have Kris Kristofferson being awesome as a side character in a location that none of the main plotlines ever require you to visit and Rob Corddry is tucked away in a corner of the New Vegas strip with an entire intentionally-bad standup routine at the Aces casino that most gamers will never actually hear. I was playing Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins a few minutes ago and I got to Wario's Castle and I was listening to You Know My Name, the main theme to the James Bond film Casino Royale, and I imagined the guy singing the song was Wario and thought "Yeah right, buddy!" and then I got to Wario and I beat him and I beat the game. This is one of my greatest moments in gaming history for me. Super Mario Land 2 and James Bond are two very good things that create a magical experience when brought together.
