The protagonist is a cryogenically frozen pre-war soldier. That was in the VA audition sides too. Same dude turns up at the top of page 1 as concept art.

Fallout 2 had two gag characters based around how dumb a premise this is so obvs they had to do it for reals.

Wait why is it a dumb premise?

Because it's a lazy way of giving the protagonist pathos and ignorance of the setting, but the necessarily brief glimpse we get of his life before the story proper starts undercuts our ability to care about what he's nominally lost.

Give him amnesia I say.

The Courier doesn't have amnesia. He or she is just a totally blank slate who can be as ignorant or aware as the player wants.

But it's also not an issue of laziness. I'm sure they've put a lot of work into their dumb premise, complete with flashbacks and lovingly designed ruins full of dioramas they've set up to give you emotions. It's just wasted effort, like all the father/son crap in Fallout 3.

I don't want flashbacks/pre-war stuff either.

Tbf, FO2 did overdo it with the wacky references and diluted much of the original's atmosphere. I still prefer 2 at the end of the day, but 1 is a more even experience.

There's still supposedly some big announcement coming. Multiple journalists have gotten emails telling them about something codenamed Fallout 4.1 that's supposed to be disclosed pretty soon. Some people think it's gonna be more promo material, and some people think it's gonna be a non-numbered game or spinoff, but I really wouldn't be surprised if it were a Zenimax owned-and-operated platform for DLC and mods. Probably with payment options.

That would be the dumbest thing in video game history

At the time I remember being skeptical of what a Bethesda Fallout would mean, but the early concept art teases had me hopeful we'd at least get some virtual post apoc eye candy.

What we got was a bit of a let down.

The new trailer, again, isn't quite the jump I was hoping for or even expecting, but it does already feature some evocative vistas.

If you had a gun skill of 1 (out of 10) I wouldn't really mind if the weapon had mad sway that made it nearly impossible to aim accurately at range when you tried to aim down sights or something- but if you still miss when you're clearly aiming at your target, that's silly for the same reasons morrowinds approach was silly, with your weapon just passing harmlessly through your opponent.

I could certainly see more of a gradient in weapon proficiency. Instead of just weapon sway, the further off from the requirement the worse the recoil, the sloppier and slower the reloads, the higher chance of jamming etc etc

Not that will ever happen since people really like to watch poo poo blow in slowmotion.

I'd just like a semblance of strategy to the combat. Open world enemy AI is probably hard, but they can do much better. The fact that the game's reusing the crappy running animations - meaning no big overhaul, making new more complicated animations like jumping to cover less likely - doesn't fill me with hope.

The Westside exterior was so poorly designed. Along this massive barricade of condemned buildings and rubble, there are slightly different bits barricade that act as doors. Yes there are "entrance signs" (silhouette of a person in a yellow diamond shape), but if you don't realize their function they just look like trash stuck onto the barricade. The whole area is monotonous. Probably part of why so many people miss the Thorn on their first playthrough.

I will be so happy to say goodbye to artificially boxed up communities in FO4. (please no/much less cell loading, Beth)

Yeah, but I don't think they made the right compromises to meet those limitations in the case of Westside. Other settlements managed to be more interesting than a set of repeating walls of garbage. Westside looks like a place the player (i.e., the person playing, not the character) is supposed to ignore.

Todd Howard recently described Fallout 4's intended gameplay as a "pinata of micro-experiences".

"Some games are like a steak dinner, but I think [Bethesda's] flagship IPs distinguish themselves by being more like candy-filled pinata. The player hits it hard enough and they're going to be showered with a bunch of little narrative bits. It's like...'oh, a Jolly Rancher'? That would be a mini-quest to escort an NPC to a village. And then 'oh hey, here's a Dum-Dum'--you've got to find and skin five mole rats. A pack of Smarties? Probably, I don't know, something related to bottle caps."

"Ludonarrative dissonance is rendered completely irrelevant by this approach, because the player is obliged to construct their own story based on all of these bits and pieces--these snapshots--of the Fallout setting."

Speaking of Salvatore's, one thing I missed in the new generation of Fallout was the old world mystique of energy weapons.

It's in service of gameplay balance, but being able to find laser weapons on any random fiend feels wrong. I also don't particularly like the ramshackle look of FO3's EWs.
