I'm playing through Fallout 3 and it's super weird. I'm enjoying it but I never finished the game and I don't remember any of it since I haven't touched it since it came out.

I'm not big on the percentages thing that they do, I much prefer passing a speech check or whatever if you have the proper points or whatever.

I really liked FO3 except for the underground areas, and I think that's because I preferred to run around with the hunting rifle until I got that kickass .44 repeater, and the metro really needed an automatic weapon of some kind.

Yeah, it definitely leads to a lot of save scumming if you can be arsed to waste a few minutes to pass a 10% speech check that gets you 50 caps or whatever.
By the way, was it possible in Fallout 1 and 2 to break locks? Because I made a serious effort never to force locks in 3/NV because of it.

I don't think so, I remember spending like 15m repeatedly trying to lockpick the entrance to the Fallout 2 mercenary caves with my nonexistent lockpick skill, finally got it after who knows how many tries.

The stupid thing is, with Broken Steel you can actually ask Fawkes, Charon or RL-3 to go into the chamber and input the code because they're immune to radiation. But the ending still calls you a coward because you... did the sensible thing and asked one of three companions immune to radiation to do something that wouldn't even harm them and in some cases would actively heal them instead of stupidly going in head first and committing suicide.

Yeah, Bethesda didn't really think the ending through at all in Fallout 3 and put less thought into Broken Steel. Oh well at least the Liberty Prime setpiece was cool.

I didn't even know about this poo poo the first time I played so I loaded an old save, went back and got a radiation proof follower, then....yeah. t:mad: Bethesda writers.

Todd Howard recently described Fallout 4's intended gameplay as a "pinata of micro-experiences".

"Some games are like a steak dinner, but I think [Bethesda's] flagship IPs distinguish themselves by being more like candy-filled pinata. The player hits it hard enough and they're going to be showered with a bunch of little narrative bits. It's like...'oh, a Jolly Rancher'? That would be a mini-quest to escort an NPC to a village. And then 'oh hey, here's a Dum-Dum'--you've got to find and skin five mole rats. A pack of Smarties? Probably, I don't know, something related to bottle caps."

"Ludonarrative dissonance is rendered completely irrelevant by this approach, because the player is obliged to construct their own story based on all of these bits and pieces--these snapshots--of the Fallout setting."

Problem with removing durability and relying completely on mods to keep things 'interesting', once you make that ideal weapon, that's it, you no longer have any motivation to do anything else with it until you ultimately just get bored with it. That's just makes everything static and lame.

Go full on CoD and put in a bunch of different scopes/foregrips/barrel mods/etc so there's no one true gun. If you want to go sneaky, put a silencer on, but its going to make you ADS slower and reduce range/damage. Slap a foregrip on for controllable full auto, or put on an underbarrel GL for maximum splatter effect. That sort of thing.

I always like it better when skills in games improve "handling" rather than damage for guns. Less wobble, less recoil, quicker reloads, etc. That's more milsim than RPG style though.

Not F4, but I thought this Killing Floor 2 putting in an entirely separate 'reloading expert' animation in was kinda cool:

If Bethesda ever put an anachronistic song in one of their Fallout games, it would undoubtedly be Pete Hines' favorite song, If You Like Pina Coladas by Jimmy Buffett, which he described as a "song for every man. I would be okay with this, as long as you can craft 100+ proof pina coladas and use them as molotovs.
