I still don't get why Bedelia went with him to Europe and is just now regretting that she traveled to another continent with a cannibalistic serial killer. Can somebody refresh me on what happened in season 2 that might explain that decision?

A strange episode, and Fuller is a monster for not picking up from the cliffhanger. But we still love him. Hannibal's black comedy really is the marinade in the smoked leg. And on that subject. “You're not dead yet, Abel. You still have to eat." “Well, I'll have the chicken, then." “Tastes of human, sir."

She's been brainwashed, more than likely, as evidenced by her comment about believing she had full control of her own actions that day. The episode was like an odd time warp where Hannibal takes his brainwashed Clarice from the end of the book on his Italian adventures from the beginning of it.

The A/V Club review went into some detail on how Hannibal has a major psychological hold over her, it's quite interesting.

I'm excited to see the ways in which she fights back and stays a 'step ahead' of Hannibal at times, as Fuller mentioned will happen. It's interesting how the minds Hannibal fucks with for companionship are often the ones intelligent enough to fight back. Obviously his search is for an equal, but I wonder how much of it is knowing and wanting that risk he takes-- the danger it could be turned on him, especially if he reveals too much of what is beneath his person suit.

Is there some special effect going on in this shot? It looks like they brightened the picture of Satan more than what you would see just from the projector shining the light on Hannibal's face.
|
|

You're seeing it from Bedelia's point of view, which is the turning point in the episode that convinces her to pack her poo poo and get going. It's almost certainly manipulated as Hannibal seems to fade into the image.

NoEyedSquareGuy posted:Is there some special effect going on in this shot? Yeah, it's a composite shot that fades the background shot into the foreground so Mikkelsen's face appears to become Lucifer. This episode also hosed around with aspect ratios as a signal to which time period a particular part of the story was set (as well as the less subtle black and white).

I had cooled a bit on the show as last season progressed, but I loved that premiere.

I was wondering how they did that, I didn't think of a composite shot. I thought they might have had a light on Mads' face and dimmed it to allow Satan to take over.

Was that Alana in the preview for next week? It went by too fast and I couldn't tell if that was that person or not. I've been staying away from spoilers so I have no idea who survived the finale from last season.

After re-watching this episode I am really blown away at how well Gillian sells her character's fear without saying a word. Very well done. That premiere kicked rear end.

Both she and Mads (and Hugh, for that matter) have such awe-inspiring command of their facial expressions. One of the things I love best about watching the show is.....I don't know how to explain this clearly, but you'll probably get my meaning....there is so much significance in the tiniest detail, it's like your brain is literally partaking in an hour-long feast as you watch, just gorging like a pig on all the information flying at you through your eyes and ears. Your brain is in a continuous state of feeding. Just watching the actors' faces, there's a fuckton of character information in the smallest twitch of the smallest muscle. I think that was the moment the show went from "I really like this show!" to "

Yeah, they are riding hard on the vibe of dream-like/ hypnotizing direction for the episodes. I loved the episode by the way (though I did feel confused about being sick to my stomach and enjoying the imagery and food porn- as intended ). Definitely my idea of great television. Also, - Is it that kind of party? - It's not that kind of party. - No, it really isn't. I really like that the dialogues in the series seem to go to unexpected directions, thankfully not in a way that is forced or disconnected from what is going on. This is not the best example of this - it's more an example of the series humor. But it did catch me by surprise. AbstractNapper fucked around with this message at 20:44 on Jun 5, 2015 |

She didn't know about the whole ancient Romans acorn/oyster thing but I thought her reaction to finding out was more along the lines of "ugh loving Hannibal" than terror, and the oral sex joke was 100% deliberate. I mean, it's not like she doesn't already know he could eat her at any time.

Little history lesson: The opera that plays as Hannibal kills Dr Fell is Don Pasquale. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Pasquale quote:completed largely by Giovanni Ruffini as well as the composer. It was based on a libretto by Angelo Anelli for Stefano Pavesi's opera Ser Marcantonio written in 1810[1] but, on the published libretto, the author appears as "M.A." So, someone whose work was accredited to another. A fitting theme song for Hannibal killing Dr Fell and taking over his identity.

I was wrecking my brain trying to figure out why Tom Wisdom looked so familiar and finally remembered he plays the Archangel Micheal on Dominion. Which in a show that is arguably about Lucifer is sort of fitting I suppose.
