This is a Good Show, but has a Bad Thread. Seriously, I've read through the first 13 pages and it's just so terrible. I just finished the finale last night, so I'll catch up soon and can't wait to discuss it with you guys! I was very satisfied with the season overall.

E: Ha, the thread gets a lot better on page 14.

Yeah, this is very much a real social engineering tactic. Granted, you usually don't drop 20 of them in the parking lot because that breeds suspicion, but it's a common vector of attack. I used to work InfoSec at a bank and we did exactly this as part of annual penetration testing.

Like Dr. Wu said, no, but it means remedial training and a bullet point on a report to improve before the next audit.

I finally caught up on the thread, and can't believe no one has mentioned since the finale that in Elliot's withdrawal dream, Tyrell was holding a key. Encryption key? I'm hoping the series does t go that way, and I don't think it will. The repercussions of fsociey's actions have to be real and not undone by the key, but I think it will come into play in one way or another.

I don't know what to make out of the conversation between Elliot and Tyrell's wife. I don't think Tyrell even wants back in at E corp, I think he allowed Elliot to proceed and possibly even filmed the video that Elliot focused on in the final episode. I don't know where he could be, but I don't think he's dead and I think him and Elliot are allies now.

I need to rewatch the season.

I love that the show not only seems to anticipate that the viewer's reaction will be "Oh, he's going Tyler Durden," but pretty much responds by saying "Yeah, what if he is?"

They're not trying to snow you in some effort to build to a "shocking" "reveal". It's got enough swagger to let you make up your own mind, and enough confidence to think you'll be invested either way. And it earns every last ounce.

CloFan

What were the references? I didn't catch them

CloFan
Nov 6, 2004

Man, it was telegraphed pretty heavily. Sure, there were scenes for misdiretion and to add doubt, but I really don't think it was meant to be a 'big twist'. It wasn't even played that way when it was revealed, it was more an an affirmation for the viewer.

I actually really like that the finale didn't make an effort to show the scope of the fallout of the hack. It would have been too much with everything else going on, and they maintained the dizzyness of the situation by focusing tightly on Elliot's daze.

Pretty cool artistic choice. It must have been tempting to go completely in the opposite direction for the last episode of the season, eg literally the ending to Fight Club.

Agreed. Unrelated, did you ever film a marble beerboyz finale?

DaveKap posted:

Yeah, I am constantly noticing the amazing camera work on this show. Just check out the Tyrell v Scott scene. Scott's sitting down most of the time while BatemanTyrell tries to talk down to him but the entire time, Scott has a command over the area of the frame.

And although Tyrell starts off with about a quarter of the frame, as soon as Scott admits he knows that Tyrell wanted CTO, Tyrell shrinks to the left of the frame.

Tyrell begins to walk away but Scott pulls out the coup de grāce that he knows about Tyrell sneaking into the bathroom.

He's immediately shrunk down into a tiny, fearful man. His plans failed, he's an embarrassment, and Scott will keep him in the shitter for his stupid stunts. Tyrell's the bad guy of the show yet this frame still makes you feel sorry for him.

Also note the changes in depth of field, I can't get enough of how well done this cinematography is! I look forward to the Every Frame a Painting video that will inevitably go over the first season of this show.

I love this show. I finally watched E1-2 yesterday, and caught 3 tonight. Looking forward to the rest of the season, great episodes so far. I was on board for the asylum theory last night, but I don't think E3 added to that theory much besides maybe chess, which you could see being played there (but also everywhere else). That's the closest Elliot's been to a computer in a month, I guess. The religion meltdown was great, but the best part was the beginning:

"Elliot, would you like to share?"

"Nah man... my system's hung."

Finally caught up, that was a great episode! I'm a fan of the slow-burn. You don't have to have a ton of action and plot development in every episode to have a good show.

I did want to point out that the 'rubber ducky' that the one hacker gave angela is a real exploit. He says it kinda fast but I love that the writers get things like this right-- Mimikatz Exploit on Github. Between that and them using Signal to communicate, this show has not lost it's real-tech edge. Besides them not using a script for Angela, but w/e

There was a line between Price and [someone] about how he was thinking of pushing E-Coin if the bailout didn't happen. That's one of the most interesting aspects for me, to see E-Corp push their own currency as a means of economic recovery. But, there's already a sign at the deli that says they accept E-Coin, so maybe it's already in play?

That episode was fantastic! Great pacing and cinematography, and music selection.

Cisco's head is gone, and you can totally see a ketchup bottle exploding on the table in that zoomed gif. Darlene is probably alive, potentially with a couple bullet wounds though.

How did the DA assassins know where Cisco was? And how dumb is Dom's supervisor, god drat. Unless he meant to do that :tinfoil:
