Season 3 of Orange is the New Black starts tomorrow, June 12. If you haven't watched the first two seasons, a woman named Piper Chapman is sent to prison wherein she has wacky prison adventures. Most episodes are formatted where interspersed with the main plot we get backstory flashbacks for one of the inmates, usually showing how they ended up in prison. While the show is technically about Piper, it's really held together by the strong ensemble cast of the other prisoners. Summary of Season 1: Piper, an early-30s upper class WASPy woman goes to prison for 15 months for smuggling drug money 10 years ago. Shortly after arriving she reunites with her old girlfriend, Alex, who is also in prison for the same drug related crimes. Alex and Piper rekindle their relationship, causing Piper's engagement with her fiance Larry to be called off. During her time, Piper's attitude makes her several enemies, including a meth-addict named Pennsatucky. During the Christmas pageant Pennsatucky attacks Piper, causing her to nearly beat Pennsatucky to death. Some other plots include a mentally unstable woman known as Crazy Eyes becoming obsessed with Piper, a Russian woman, Red, who smuggles goods in via the kitchen being ousted from her position of power, and an inmate Daya and one of the prison guards, Bennett falling in love, and Daya becoming pregnant. In order to conceal their relationship, Daya has sex with another guard, Mendez (aka Pornstache), who is fired when caught. Summary of Season 2: Piper, while still technically the protagonist, has little to do in this season. Her breakup with Larry becomes permanent as Larry and Piper's best friend Polly begin a relationship. Alex is released because she testifies against the drug Kingpin she used to work for, but he goes free anyway. She was last seen caught violating her parole by carrying a gun. The main plot of the season surrounds the animosity between Red and a new inmate Vee, who had a history from when Red was newly imprisoned. Vee gathers all the black inmates around her to create a gang, and they begin smuggling cigarettes and drugs into the prison. Red joins with the old ladies and uses a tunnel in the greenhouse to smuggle various prohibited but otherwise harmless items into the prison. The confrontation comes to a head when Vee nearly beats Red to death and then escapes through the tunnel, but is immediately killed when hit by the van of another escaping convict. Daya and Bennett's relationship is rocky as her pregnancy continues, as Pornstache is believed to be the father of the baby, but in the finale Bennett confesses to the new Assistant Warden that it is his child. So far Boo's the only good flashback, and it's pretty hackneyed too, but Lee DeLaria is real good so...

I can't get over how they've managed to make Pennsatucky actually likable without having to just completely overhaul her character.

Pretty underwhelmed by episode one. I don't remember the show being this cute in the past, nor its references being so forced. I guess it's going to take a while to get re acclimated to the tone, thankfully though that's exactly what Netflix shows give you. I wonder whether they will try to introduce a major villain for the season to replicate V, or if it will be more sprawling. I think it needs some more danger, but don't know if they can replicate her presence. We'll see.

Yeah, this season's.... not so hot. Really lacking in tension, I thought. And really not that funny as a result.

The first two episodes are...fine. They're definitely playing on the wacky a bit too hard. I love this show's wacky prison antics as much as the next guy but as levity from the heavier stuff. I'm hoping the stakes up later on and it doesn't just sorta become a weird hangout sitcom.

(3x03) drat it, I was really hoping Nicky wouldn't succumb to her addiction. Man, the ending of this episode was so tragic. Also I keep forgetting Piper is even a character on this show until her scenes, lol.

I'm only a few minutes into episode 2, but I was lukewarm on the first episode. Some of the scenes were cute, but some of the flashbacks were a bit meh. Poussey continues to be the best, and I'm wondering if they'll ever explain what she was put in prison for. From any flashbacks they've shown, she had a pretty stable, loving home life, and her parents didn't care she's a lesbian. And I got a chuckle out of that monotone-sounding CO (I have no idea of the character's name) siccing the muddy-handed kids on Ford because he had previously told all the kids not to touch him/come near him. I still fast-forward through Piper/Alex scenes, and the whole Daya/ Bennett storyline is such a snore.

I really wish season 2 had Piper staying in that other prison for good because her storyline's such a tedious drag. It goes nowhere and feels like a different show when she's on-screen. Piper makes Alex's role pointless in the series too. I'm very intrigued by the possibility of Alex sans Piper... and we'll never get that because the staff can't let Piper go. The new season is pretty good through 6 episodes, though it's somewhat too slow for my tastes. The first two episodes were weak, but episode 3 significantly improves with Nicky's heartbreaking departure and episode 4's excellent Big Boo flashback. I'm okay with how the season's low-key compared to the intensity of season 2, but I wish there was more of an overarching plotline. But there's still half a season left for me to watch and the private prison takeover could turn to a crazy direction. Cough Drop The Beat fucked around with this message at 18:49 on Jun 12, 2015 |

This show is so frustrating sometimes, because when it's good it's really good, but then too often it just crawls so far up its own rear end, like at the end of the first episode when that loving twee banjo music starts playing it's just like come the gently caress on, show. Very pleased that Piper/Alex have taken a backseat in favour of all the other characters, who are way more interesting. Nicky's my favourite, and every scene with Pennsatucky has been amazing, it looks like both are getting a lot of screen time this season, hopefully it won't end in tragedy.

Hey, I wrote this when we all started the last season, and it applies just as much to this season. Anything less than Daya dying in childbirth and Bennett suiciding out of grief will be a massive disappointment to me now.

I was told this morning by the National Public Radio that this season is not as good as the last was and includes too many "on the nose" lines such as a conversation relating to friendships once the girls get out of the slammer, anyone's thoughts?

Eh, this show has always been ridiculously on the nose. Remember in season 2 when the plot grinds to a halt so every character can take a turn saying how compassionate release is a bad thing? (disregarding the fact that that's not how compassionate release even works)

3x03 gently caress you, Orange is the New Black I hope this isn't the last we've seen of Nicky. Not only do I think she's the best character, I think Natasha Lyonne is the best actress on the show. That's a real shame if they just wrote her out.

3x10 Goddamn. I feel really bad for Pennsatucky. That ending was a gut punch. She was finally having a little fun... and that had to happen. She has a very unfortunate life, even compared to most other inmates in the series.

Just got to ep 6, and while some of the flashbacks/back stories are a bit too formulaic/on the nose I felt bad for (3x06) Chang, and also Lorna's breakdown, admitting the 'only person who cared about her' got sent away I don't know if it's a positive or a negative that I give more of a gently caress for the side characters than the main characters...
