Yeah, that's what I meant. By making it a movie in the Alien series it would lead to certain obligations. It has to be a slasher film, has to feature Facehugger scene, it has to feature X&Y excetera excetera. If it was a new franchise it wouldn't have any of that and it could just be about what the film maker actually wants it to be about.

I was sincerely enjoying SMGs spin on A:C. Sure, it's gimmick, but he puts effort into batshit interpretations and I appreciate that. It can take a movie to interesting places. You guys egging him on was a lot worse than his posting, everyone who said "wow looking forward to part 2" or some poo poo should've been banned instead. Covenant is still a bad disjointed movie by the way and recognizing a gothic horror plot (good for you!) or noticing that Fassbender's two characters are thematically linked (wow you're so smart!) doesn't make it good. SMG's good at coming up with interesting takes, but he's also good at being a condescending prick. It takes two seconds to remove the "You're reading me wrong, pay attention or go away" from that post and there's no problem with it. That's my bottom line. In the war between insightful but insufferable and Bowie avatar, I'll go with Bowie avatar every time. Some friends and I are trying to figure out if there's a way to trim Covenant down to a ~45 minute continuation of the story told in Prometheus, trimming out all the fat (in the form of the crew that only exist to die and endless shots of green laser sights bobbing down hallways). Does anyone else think this is possible? If so, what would you prefer to see cut?

Well, you could probably just have the last shot be David looking back as he leaves the necropolis right after the switch. So everything on the ship at the end is cut, so all scenes with the two characters in shower can be cut. I don't really agree that auch a reductive cut would be better, but I like this kind of thinking in general, and I'd be curious to see it if you guys actually did it.

What was David talking about with Oram when he showed him the dead winged insect in his workshop right before the egg scene? Was that supposed to be what came out of the ampule? During the bombing scene you can clearly see the black stuff is buzzing around like insects close to the ground.

I actually really liked his point about franchise thinking. A huge number of reviews seem concerned with what Covenant means for the franchise and how it ties into the franchise, rather than just judging it on its own merits. I don't at all agree with his "learn to write better or get out" assholery though.

I do think that too many people care about how David made eggs without a queen, or how this film is going tonlead to the events of Alien. Like I listened to that podcast awhile back with the Ridley Scott interview, and the interview was okay, but then the discussion on the podcast was 90% them talking about inconsistencies with other films and worrying that a sequel would "ruin Alien". It's like they didn't even listen to anything Ridley Scott said in the interview He described all of the preceeding films as b-movies of the "kill em all/kill or be killed" genre and went on to talk about how he's trying to do something much different and ckearly doesn't give a gently caress about the earlier films in terms of continuity. He doesn't even seem to know much about them, because he says that David Fincher used all digital effects. And everyone is entitled to their opinion. You're free to be upset that Covenant doesn't seem to tie in with all the previous films, but that's not a flaw in the film.
