Newest video(s): 52: Shady Business/Polsy Alternate thread title: Resident Evil IV-2 The Evil Within is a survival horror game released in October 2014 to a good bit of critical acclaim, if some technical difficulties. The game draws a lot of comparisons to Resident Evil 4 and that would make sense since both games are directed by Shinji Mikami, the madman also behind the first three Phoenix Wright games and GOD HAND. I had a ball playing Resident Evil 4 so this one should be pretty good too! The story from what I know follows our heroic protagonist Sebastian Castellanos as he and two other detectives investigate a hospital that has had SPOOKY THINGS happen in the past. It also involves a bit of resource management, dodging traps, stealth, and something called the Agony crossbow. I'm excited! This is also me testing out console recording so there might be some technical difficulties. Otherwise I'm playing on the PS4 and all the videos SHOULD be at 720p60. Blind? You got it! There was a request for a blind playthrough and I figured I'd been thinking about playing this game for a while, might as well give it a shot! The only exposure I have to this game before the playthrough is 20 minutes of chapter 1 and the instruction manual! With that in mind, THIS IS A NO BLACK BAR ZONE! Don't spoil this poo poo for me! I'm not planning on telling you how Arkham Knight ends, do me the same favor! I have learned a few things today. One of them is that I am afraid of chainsaws. Another is that I should not be overwriting my save files. The reason I shouldn't be overwriting my save files is because the last 15 minutes of my recording corrupted. Niggurath posted:Hopefully though you'll start to get a bit creative and try to see if the monsters can interact with the traps at all. Good news! Using traps is a thing I've learned about. Bad news, it was all in the corrupted section. I'm pretty frustrated by this.

IronSaber posted:So if you stealth kill an enemy, are they perma-dead? And is the only benefit to lighting bodies on fire only for the ones playing 'possum?' You know I'd prefer not to have this spoiled for me just yet. It adds to the fun! As far as I can tell stabbing a dude in the head kills him for good and they're not getting back up. If I was to guess this will not always be the case. But for the moment, matches are mostly good for the guys that are playing dead.

Mraagvpeine posted:I haven't seen anything about this game, so I'm wondering if there are any secrets or documents that might have been missed in the areas we've already seen. Is it okay to talk about that? Oh yeah for sure. I think I've been pretty good about scouring the area so far but if I've missed anything feel free to point out my foolishness! IronSaber posted:Oh, I didn't know. I thought you found out. I ask only 'cause I want to get this game to scratch that Resident Evil 4 itch I've had. I hear you. I haven't found out just yet but the game is definitely not RE4. I've only finished chapter 3 so far (AND MY RECORDING CORRUPTED ) but the game has this delightful sense of panicky oh poo poo oh poo poo and I think it's because they've added the stealth elements. I'm really enjoying it so far. Now I just have to do a non-blind run of chapter 3 for video. Which SUCKS because it was a good chapter to have a blind run for. So many things learned!

CJacobs posted:You could just record the last part! Leave in the blind stuff until the part that got corrupted, then switch over to the not-blind stuff in its place. Assuming I didn't delete the clip in a rage I'm planning on doing this, the whole file isn't corrupted. The problem is the last 15 minutes got weirdly compressed into 7 minutes complete with video tearing and audio problems. It's also terrible since the last 15 minutes are the best part. BUT OH WELL. I'll probably figure it out tonight. Niggurath posted:Well it can be super easy to miss, but when you head into the upgrade mirror place there is usually a 'Missing Persons' poster and a newspaper in the main lobby for you to pick up. I think you missed those when you went there in your second video. I'll start keeping an eye out for these! Maybe splice them into a video later.

Alright. This is getting weird. I just re-recorded and the video's screwed up at the same spot. The first 30 minutes look like they work but as soon as I enter the same area as the last video it gets choppy and I lose coherence. I need to figure this out.Samovar posted:Why is there an electrical short-circuit sound when you stab people in the head? We're shorting out their neural pathways

Third time is the charm I guess. Finally got a good copy of chapter 3. Working on processing the videos now.VolticSurge posted:Still a better game than Arkham Origins. And no,I'm never taking that back. Well let's be fair. The issues with the recording were on my software side, not with the game. I think! I still like it. The game has this sense of panic and danger. Though it might be because I tend to play it slowly and carefully until poo poo gets real. Then once poo poo gets real it's time to be terrible at combat! I'm a big fan of GO TIME I'm just not very good at it Sorta like Niggurath pointed out earlier. Niggurath posted:I do really love though that you tried to fight that huge mob; I remember when I was playing and I just saw them all start coming for me, my first impetus was just to get the gently caress out of dodge.

4: Technical Difficulties/Polsy Right. Video may still be processing for 60FPS but otherwise here's the first part of chapter 3. I didn't have any issues recording this time around but that may be because I took another route. If you're interested in seeing the two previous runs I had, blind andwarts and all, the first run is here and the second run is here. I really couldn't figure any way to fix it aside from taking a different path and apparently it worked!

So! I'm going to have to change this to a "blind as possible" run since I'm still having some technical difficulties. I'll do my best to make it seamless and work and probably most of my reactions will still be genuine! I just can't be sure where the recording problems are going to crop up until after I've finished a chapter.

Mraagvpeine posted:Could it be because of lengthy recordings? Maybe if you keep it to less than 30 minutes per installment. This is what I'm thinking may be the problem now. I've been recording for an hour at a time but I might start making half hour cuts. I haven't worked with this software before so I'm used to being able to record what I want through DXtory. Console gamers have it hard. But I'm not even sure this is it since sometimes the audio is off on a brand new recording. The other problem is I can't even reliably replicate the problems!

Trip report: defusing bombs gets harder. They hurt. The game has a difficulty spike in the next chapter.TKMobile posted:Gameplay-wise, what happened to your axe? Would it have broken or something if you whalloped an undead dude with it X amount of times, or was that another glitch that deprived you of it? I believe axes disappear/break after one use. I think the one I lost was because of a glitch or something where I went into what I'm calling the mirror world. 1stGear posted:This verges on a gameplay spoiler I guess but bomb disarming is basically never worth it. Its crazy difficult and doesn't get you much while taking off a ton of health if you fail (you will fail all the time). Meanwhile, bombs can be pretty easily snuck past. I will fail to learn this lesson, I guarantee it. My greed knows no bounds.

RealSovietBear posted:It's funny how differently you play this game to me. I usually try to be super careful and sneaky and you're just "gently caress it, come at me" with the most useless melee attack I've seen in a Mikami game. Looking forward to checking out the rest of your playthrough as I go through the game myself. It's probably because I played a good bit of the Last Of Us too. I tend to stealth as far as possible and then once poo poo gets real then poo poo GETS REAL. I will probably regret this action over time I'm sure. I'm sure it probably stems from a deep seated need to subjugate the game to my will and not be seen as a bitch. For capturing I've been using Elgato Game Capture so I might need to look into OBS. At the moment I'm planning on cutting the recording into maybe half hour chunks mid-chapter so I can minimize any loss. Anyway! New video! Finishing up chapter 3! 5: A Man, A Plan, Chainsaw/Polsy

Recording in split up segments is not the answer. This is infuriating. How does one record an external device through OBS because this poo poo seriously can't go on.

Niggurath posted:Does your capture device's recording software not work for you? Cause that's normally the route I went with my Elgato. I'm using the Elgato's Game Capture HD software. I'm not sure if the problem is with the software, my computer, or the connection to the console. At certain points in the recording the game's audio will completely cut out and the video will get choppy. I've already turned off flashback play and I've got nothing taking up significant amounts of memory in the background. But the problem doesn't seem to be making smaller/different video files, even stopping one that corrupted at the end of it and starting a new one resulted in zero audio for the new file. I'm confused by this.

RealSovietBear posted:Ep5: does the crossbow spawn in different areas? Because for me it spawned in the other house? Yep, crossbow spawns depending on which house you go in first! I will second getting lucky with the fire. The first time I took the guy out involve a lot of shotguns and using the spike trap in the right house. The second time involved a lot of shotgun blasts and grenades. This time got the fire and it was pretty good! I'm going to try a couple different things as far as recording goes, just suffice to say that chapter 5 also will not be blind. Which is a shame, drat that was a good one to go into blind. Not sure how it'll stack up to chapter 6 though, I've been hearing stories about chapter 6.

Taking victory from defeat! I'm still pretty frustrated about the lack of reliable recording and it's something I need to figure out, but for the time being I'll be cutting together blind and non-blind runs as possible. So I'll definitely call this the blind-as-possible playthrough. I've got some stuff to re-record for chapter five but otherwise chapter 4 is good to go starting tomorrow.

In this exciting chapter, the game amps up the spooky factor. 6: Lost My Keys/Polsy I can definitely see all the comparisons to RE4 and the Last Of Us. The game is from the same jerks that did RE4 and there's the same sort of old village scenery, but the combat and pacing reminds me more of the Last Of Us. You'll have these long moments of quiet quiet quiet quiet and then THERE WAS A FIREFIGHT. The combat is definitely a lot more spread apart than RE4 and that's not a bad thing, gives you more time to absorb the ambiance rather than RIP AND TEAR. Fact is I'm never sure what's going to happen when I turn the corner, and that's great.

Good news! Chapter 6 is recorded and entirely blind. I'm using a different HDMI input on my TV and recording audio through Audacity rather than using the built in muxer, and it's been good for an hour and a half. Hopefully this will be the end of the technical difficulties.

Hopeford posted:By the way question about the DLC weapons, if you didn't pre-order the game is there any way to get them? Like, at all? Do they come with the season pass or something? Because I think they are really fun and it would be a pity if they were literally locked out of the game forever for anyone trying to get into it now. I don't believe they come with the season pass, it seems to be a completely pre-order only bonus. I didn't pre-order the game but buying it from a military base they usually get the pre-order bonuses, I bought the game maybe a few weeks before I started recording for this. That being said the only weapon you get from the DLC pack is the double barreled shotgun and that does get pretty quickly outclassed by the regular shotgun. Not to mention you get access to both of them in the same chapter! I can definitely say there is no point at which I've wanted to use poison bolts so far which may be a failing on my part. Incendiary bolts are pretty classy though.

The biggest thing I'm getting from all the scene changes is that the game is keeping me off balance. Which isn't a bad thing, even if it does feel narratively hamfisted. Not knowing where I'm going to show up next or if it's going to be as safe as it used to be gives a constant sense of heightened tension.

Something I find kooky is that at the beginning of the video the doctor looking at us shifts between doctor and Kidman for quick flashes. The background changes too. Also when we got dragged down to fight longhair hellbeast in chapter 5, everyone heard the noise and cringed in pain. Kidman did not. She's involved somehow.

I'm glad to hear this LP is inspiring other people to try it out, otherwise this thread would be pretty dead! 13: Oh Look, Twins/Polsy So I don't think I've mentioned it but I've mostly been spending my upgrades as the thread recommends. Niggurath is all like YO DAWG YOU NEED MATCHES and I got matches and you know so far it's worked out. There was another dude who said CROSSBOWS so I've done that as well, but I haven't recorded the next chapter yet. What do you want to see upgraded? Personally I'm leaning towards weapon damage since the game seems to be getting more combat heavy but for all I know that's going to change shortly. What upgrades do you want me to get? Also, I've been using the "eye" icon which is normally disabled on survival difficulty. This gives you an idea of if you've been spotted or if you're still in stealth. If you have it disabled invisible assholes will come as MUCH MORE of a surprise. Should I disable the eye? who am i kidding i already know the answer

RealSovietBear posted:The only problem with playing without the eye at this point is that you'll need some time to get used to it. I personally think it's more fun and tense without it (which is how I'm doing my playthrough). But then again, I play with the letterboxes on so what do I know? I mean, if anything, this is the perfect time to start playing without it. It's kind of like getting used to cold water in a pool, might as well just jump in and suffer! Niggurath posted:Also it's good to know I wasn't the only one that tried to fight those giants in the tiniest hallway possible; I was kicking myself so hard that I didn't even fight them in the large, open arena they give you and instead just ripped into them with a billion bullets. And you totally wrecked that dog's face; I had such a hard time with that dog because I was trying to conserve my bolts....and well it's a lot quicker and sneakier than you might have realized. I'd say if you ever get the chance, you should go back and let it live for a while to see what it does. Up until now (through chapter 6) I've watched RealSovietBear's Hitbox streams of the game, and I've seen what the dog does when you don't wreck it right off the bat. What a dick! He hides in the bushes and plays matador with you and you have to catch him while he's out. The biggest concern I have at the moment is I might need these bolts for the next chapter but poo poo man they're already used! I'm going to start recording tomorrow but y'know I can work with what I've got I'm sure. The game doesn't seem to be super focused on resource management so that you're screwed if you use your big items. I hope.
