Are possums really that common? Like if it wasn't winter and I looked outside onto any grassy area I'd probably see 3-4 squirrels without having to even turn my head. Are we talking that level of common?

They are less common than that, in so far as they are usually hiding in trees and only seem to come at at dusk and night. There's also the brush turkey which is pretty common in my area. But that's not a mammal so I don't think it counts. Where are you that you see echidna's?

Being nocturnal you don't generally see them, but they do come down to ground level in the park in the centre of the city at night to forage for cigarette butts and other intoxicating substances.
