Let's Play The Force Unleashed II

Someday in the distant future, someone will peruse the annals of videogame history. They will scroll down a list of Seventh Gen character action games, and they will utter... "What the hell is Force Unleashed II?" This thread is the answer to their journey.

What kind of LP is this?

Video, post-commentary. I have already purchased all of Starkiller's upgrades, so that should make the game far easier to watch, and allow me to show the mechanics better.

Why should I care?

The original Force Unleashed was both incredibly well advertised and released on every platform in existence. Everyone knows what Force Unleashed is, what its faults are, and where it succeeds. Force Unleashed II, I feel, didn't get such a chance. It seemed to be rather quickly forgotten, as was foretold by both its middle-of-the-road reception and lack of "brand new" wow factor. We're going to take a good look at the game's mechanics and storytelling to see if we can untangle it all. We won't be in for a long ride, but it will be quite bumpy.

Episode List

01. Rebirth

02. Fancy Architecture

03. Ultra Rancor

04. Finding Yourself

05. Terrorists

06. Tower Defense

07. Starkiller

08. Confrontation

Thanks for watching!

Is it just me or is the audio for the cutscenes out of synch?

In addition, the music during the title fanfare is really weird, getting totally muted in a couple of places and sounding somewhat tinny throughout.

Youtube screwed with the opening fanfare, due to copyright claims, and the second big cutscene seems to be out of sync. The in-engine cutscenes and sound-effects/dialogue all seem fine, and I honestly can't tell if it's an error with the game. I'll adjust the audio in future videos if it decides to pull that again, though.

Edit: Just found out it was an error while converting the video, should be easy to avoid in the future. Not sure why it only affected the cutscenes though.

My apologies, in the future I will refrain from editing and uploading videos at 4 AM.

I really dislike how petty General Kota and Starkiller became towards each other in this game. Kota spends what is likely several months thinking his student is dead, discovers Starkiller is apparently alive, and the first thing he does is chew him out for not being more willing to do his part for the Rebellion. Not even so much as a "hey, I'm glad you're not dead"?

So Kota and Starkiller argue, Starkiller goes to Dagobah for what is either a mostly cut level or an incredibly shoehorned cameo, and then we go to Juno's starship and suddenly Kota and Starkiller are bros again. There was no reason for the argument to happen, except in the interest of filling time and creating some fake "drama" between the characters that makes them both look dumb.

Thank you for cutting out the most boring bits of the boss fight on Cato Nemoidia. That fight was done much better in the "Wolverine: Origins" game. And even then it wasn't that great.

The characters are all over the place and seem to have frequent mood swings. I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed.

The writing in this game actually received awards, and it has an enormous "writing" section on Wikipedia, if you want to know more about what they were trying to achieve.

And how was Wolverine: Origins? I've been meaning to play it.

It's time to kick the tires and light the fires, Big Bird.

From what I remember, the lead dev/writer (Haden Blackman, I think) quit or was fired halfway through development, so a ton of this game was cut before release. The Dagobah level is the most obvious example, but even stuff like the Force Push/Lightning effects just aren't as good as they were in TFU 1 and kinda look like they didn't have time to polish them.

There's also the fact that the game is literally four hours long.

EDIT: It's also pretty clear that at some point there was supposed to be (spoiler for something that DOESN'T happen in the game, but I sure was surprised when the credits rolled without it) a Boba Fett boss fight, but no, he just shows up in two more cutscenes and that's it. There's one in Jedi Academy though, which to be fair is just a better game in pretty much every respect.

That is amazingly depressing, and it explains why I really love about half of the game and hate the other half. It does not explain why there was DLC, though.

Wow, that cutscene at the end was actually pretty nice from a Star Wars ship nerd perspective. They had that half-voice, half-buzz effect that Rebel comms are said to have and there were cameos from Z-95 Headhunters (the fighters the Rebels used before they got their hands on the X-Wing) and what looked like a couple of Action VI transports (made famous by the Wild Karrde in Timothy Zhan's novels).

Of course, it did have me wondering what the hell the point of the S-Foils on the Rogue Shadow are. They're about as pointless as the ones on the Republic fighters in Revenge of the Sith.

If I remember the timeline right, Lucasarts was basically falling apart at the seams at the time. I've always suspected that if Force Unleashed II didn't get released when it did then it never would have been released.

Whether or not that's a good thing is up to others to decide. I actually liked the first one, though this LP is showing me I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the sequel.

I picked this up during the May 4th PSN sale in the UK a few months back. It really is disappointing compared to the first. You can tell everyone involved is trying their best, it just manages to be less than the sum of it's parts.

At least Sam Witwer's still on form, for the most part :allears:

Here's the weirdest part of this game, the thing will be absolutely stunning, but only for maybe a shot at a time. That shot right at the end of the update where you see the big ship and can see all the awesome little kibble parts that Star Wars ships are known for is just perfect. Then there were a few time on Dagobah when, and I know it sounds weird, but the character models and the lighting almost had me believe it was a Real Dude. On a set. With a Muppet. It's just patently obvious throughout that some effort was being put into this game. I would have loved to have seen what they were going to do with Dagobah if they had proper time. I'm pretty sure they wanted a whole Max Payne-style Dream Sequence Level, but just couldn't implement it in time.

I forgot to mention this but, man, how obvious is it that Malastare was a cut level where you had to go get Kota and probably murder a thousand local stormtroopers?

I also just realized that that Rebel fleet at the end has a couple of Corellian Gunships, too, which were the original design for the Millennium Falcon. Man those things never show up outside of occasional namedrops in the books.

I actually enjoyed it quite a bit, and played all the way to the end. Even got some of the trophies for finding easter eggs in the levels.

The game is kind of front-loaded in terms of showing all of Logan's cool ways to eviscerate people, and it has a tendency to recycle mini-bosses. It had stealth sequences that I did not care for (mainly because I stink at stealth in games), puzzles that are kind of ehhh, and I found the final boss to be bullshit.

However, if you've always wanted to lunge thirty feet into a dude and remove his limbs with adamantium claws, "Wolverine: Origins" gives you that in spades. It also has my favorite Wolverine costume as an unlockable skin.

Maybe I'm a soft touch for Marvel games. I liked "Captain America: Super Soldier" and "The Amazing Spider-man" as well. "Amazing Spider-man 2" was not good at all, with that "reputation" system it had.

I actually loved the Amazing Spider-Man 2 game more than I could describe in words, and I found the reputation system tied into his character pretty well. (His character is based on the opposition of apathy, so it makes sense that being apathetic would be his downfall.)

Haha, at 14:14 you can see a TIE Bomber getting stuck on one of the docking ports. This game is so clearly barely held together.

And then Starkiller blows up a Star Destroyer with one shot from the frigate's "main gun" by...Filling it with the Force. Okay, whatever.

Why does Kota keep locking Starkiller in with the Imperials whenever anything goes wrong? "Starkiller's probably going to get himself killed here, so I'd better lock all the doors to that section just in case." Thanks for the vote of confidence, General.

How many people are on board of a Star Destroyer, on average? How many people did Starkiller just murder with the Force?

Why is Proxy in such a reduced role? He was one of my favorite characters from the first Force Unleashed, and an integral part of my favorite scene from the original. Bah, he's probably lucky he isn't more heavily involved in this mess.
