Why does everyone think I'm going to get in trouble?

Metal Gear Solid is a huuuuuge franchise owned by Konami. It's the pioneer of stealth games and it's also probably the pioneer of games being interactive movies. It's a very popular franchise that's generally heralded as one of the best video game franchises ever. The main games are fantastic, with some side titles that are a little more hit or miss.

This September marks the release of the fifth title in the franchise, The Phantom Pain, which currently seems to be the final good Metal Gear game since Konami is currently imploding. The prologue to MGSV, Ground Zeroes, was released last year and it was absolutely amazing and I am super excited for the rest of the game, so I figured it'd be a good time to look back at the series' current high point, Snake Eater.

MGS3 is the story of Naked Snake, who infiltrated Soviet Russia to extract a scientist developing a super-weapon certain to give Russia an edge in the Cold War. This is the earliest point of the Metal Gear timeline and was a prequel to the entire series when it was released and has since branched out to its own mini-series within the franchise, following Naked Snake, as opposed to the other titles that generally follow Solid Snake.

Snake Eater, like I said, is almost universally agreed to be the best Metal Gear game. Following the confusing mess that is Metal Gear Solid 2, MGS3 brought the story back down to something sensible and not convoluted, by virtue of being a prequel and having a mostly blank slate to play with. MGS3 also refined the controls from MGS2, which were already a refinement of MGS1's controls, and allowed players more ways to sneak through maps or take out guards. Chief to this was the addition of CQC, or Close-Quarters Combat, which gave players more options for handling enemies.

I'll be doing cut/uncut co-commentary for this. Joining me is my partner-in-timecrime, Jobbo_Fett, who knows the general story of this game, but has only played the Metal Gear games that came out after this one. As such:

:siren:No unmarked spoilers!:siren:

I don't mind black bars, since this game's like 11 years old, but please be mindful of the few people who haven't played this game. It's great and deserves to be unspoiled.

I'll try to make one update a week, but I make no guarantees since updates are going to be really dense.

Now, without further ado, let's get this show on the road.

"If I lose I will set myself on fire."
I remember when this came out and I thought it was pretty poo poo because there only was a bird-view camera that just really doesn't work well with the level design of this game.
Then Subsistence came along and fixed that. For a long time I thought this game was very very bad and I could not understand how people could think it's a good game simply because I hadn't played the Subsistence version until years after it came out. when I got the HD collection, in fact.

So the reason Ocelot killed those men is that they were KGB, while Ocelot is part of the extremist faction that was trying to capture Sokolov from the KGB.

Its too bad the HD version removed some of the features of Subsistence, the mini-games and secret theater were some of the best parts!

Watching these makes me want to replay the series before MGS5 comes out, so soon yet so close.

If you can't directly relate it to plot we haven't seen in this game or if it'd spoil some mechanic in this game, don't talk about it. Aside from that, go nuts with discussion about how much nicer the controls got starting from MGS4 or whatever.

SR-71 Blackbird, a plane so fast it didn't need to be stealthy.

Wikipedia posted:

The Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird" is a long-range, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft that was operated by the United States Air Force. It was developed as a black project from the Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft in the 1960s by Lockheed and its Skunk Works division. Renowned American aerospace engineer Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was responsible for many of the design's innovative concepts.

During aerial reconnaissance missions, the SR-71 operated at high speeds and altitudes to allow it to outrace threats. If a surface-to-air missile launch was detected, the standard evasive action was simply to accelerate and outfly the missile.

Actually, I think the plane in the game is an Lockheed A-12, specifically the M-21 variant, which was a predecessor to the SR-71.

The plane was made to carry the Lockheed D-21 reconnaissance drone, which the rockety thing that they stuffed Snake into is probably meant to be. Here's a picture of the whole setup:

More than likely he doesn't have 9 suppressors in his pack. Older suppressors used disposable wipes in their design. They're thin discs made of felt or rubber, and your first round fired through it will punch a hole through it, and subsequent rounds will widen the hole, making its suppression less effective. The fix for this is to replace the wipes when they have too many rounds through them and your suppressor isn't as quiet as it started out.

So he probably has 9 sets of suppressor wipes in his kit, since the body tube, baffles, and mounting hardware don't wear out.

Don't some modern suppressors still work on this system though? Or do you mean older as in the design?

Older as in the design. You can still make them, if you wanted to, but I'm not aware* of any modern suppressor that use wipes. Most modern suppressors have a lot of fluid dynamics R&D put into them, and use designs with baffles that don't really have wear parts designed into them.

*I can't honestly say I have an encyclopedic knowledge of every suppressor out there, so there might be someone still making older design suppressors with wipes.

The goat that you can shoot during the Ocelot boss duel is a markhor! Apparently Ocelot really likes them so that's why he gets particularly upset if you kill it. They live in/around Afghanistan, so maybe they'll come up in the Phantom Pain too.

Wikipedia posted:

The colloquial name is thought by some to be derived from the Persian word mar, meaning snake, and khor, meaning "eater", which is sometimes interpreted to either represent the species' ability to kill snakes, or as a reference to its corkscrewing horns, which are somewhat reminiscent of coiling snakes.

I love how Ocelot basically goes "he found us, darn it!" when the hornet swarm arrives, like he's a little kid sneaking off to play cowboys with Snake before getting in trouble with his parents.

Also re: Solid Snake's rank, he's a lieutenant...in Snake's Revenge :v:

According to the director's commentary:

Kojima posted:

Aim for Ocelot's head, then shoot his beret hat to the ground, and he will go and pick up the hat in a hurry. Ocelot hates getting his hat dirty. Also, in the forest in the back is a markhor, because Ocelot likes markhors, if you shoot that markhor he will flip out.

The commentary for MGS3 is essential reading :ocelot: Although it is full of spoilers, even for the early bits of the game.

My favorite thing so far is the fact that Ocelot's man crush on Snake is really heating up at this point. He wants to impress Snake so bad with the gun and the juggling and the stupid little growl, but Snake just keeps slapping him down and making fun of him.
