Naval treaties make the game interesting. In my most recent game I helped one get put in place which limited the displacement to 10k and guns to 8". This effectively delayed BBs 4 years, scraping some already under construction, which helped me tech up enough to build ones of my own. For some reason two of my cruisers with 9" guns under construction didn't get scrapped but I'm not complaining. Supposedly you're still able to rebuild ships outside the treaty limits but you can't actually save redesigns which are. This meant my ancient, mothballed ships with 12" couldn't be made useful. :(

I *Think* the game only checks tonnage when scrapping ships, i've had overgunned ships not get the axe before as well. I assume this is probably a bug.

I've been poking around the data folder and there's some interesting files. vpen.dat showing what I take to be the base penetration values of guns vs armour thickness before modifiers. and there's this one from hpen.dat. Not sure what it's showing but in Calc it looks cool and here's some poo poo from gundata.dat and ordnancetable.dat and have some TorpedoData.dat There's also this SpeedHPTable.dat, not sure what the hell all that means but the bottom most row heading is '52' which I'm guessing is the tonnage of the ship and it seems ships above 52 tons in the game have some weird bugs going on with them.

I'm running it on a laptop that's probably three years old and it definitely slows down during the fleet battles. So it's a simple UI but might be a little more processor intensive than you'd think.

I saw that all the different ship types are listed in the SAI manual instead of the RtW manual, but is there a list anywhere of the parameters of each type? In some post somewhere I read something about keeping a line of 22 or 23 knots, but everytime I try to make a Battleship 20+ knots the game recognizes it as a CA or BC. It would be awesome to see guidelines for these kind of things.

Two questions: Is there anyway to get that blue circle around ports to go down because I keep getting bombardment targets for my CAs and they cannot reach it in the port. Are the destroyer techs different for some countries because with Japan I got the 700t DD long after I had the 1000t and France it seems I'm getting them more or less up the scale, 400, 500, 700, 900, etc.

I present you my take on Vittorio Cuniberti's Ideal Battleship, as he postulated in an article in the 1903 edition of Jane's Fighting Ships. Its not a completely accurate take. The armament (and positioning of the main guns) is correct, but Cuniberti specified 17,000 tons*, 24 knots speed, and a 12" complete belt. Something had to give. Still, it doesn't' look half bad for an early Dreadnought. Personally I'd probably consolidate the single turrets into another pair of wing turrets, but either way its not bad for a ship that has no additional centerline turrets (Which I conveniently lack the technology for anyways in my Italy game). Might be a bit light on ammo though, but apparently HMS Dreadnought only carried 80 rounds each for her guns. * Though the dimensions he gave for the ship end up displacing about 21,800 tons according to something I found on the net, so I'm actually kinda accurate! [edit] Found someone's pixelart take on the ship, looks good. Galaga Galaxian fucked around with this message at 18:08 on Jul 22, 2015 |

Is anyone else using Grand Admiral mode or is everyone else going ~maximum grog~? Any tips on effective command in this mode? I'm not sure what to do besides try to get good broadsides with the core ships in large engagements. Should I just suck it up and switch to Rear Admiral mode?

I'd say Admiral mode is max grog because the other modes give non-historical/unrealistic level of control over your units.

I've been playing rear admiral mode, but setting everything but the flagships to AI control and just taking command for specific maneuvers like sending a division after a damaged ship. The AI seems competent enough for most things. I sometimes come off worse than I might have if I'd controlled everything but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I use Grand Admiral mode - mostly I just try to put the battle line in a good spot and hit Flotilla attack/rally/disengage as seems appropriate. Also I tend to charge my capital ships into torpedoes when it gets dark or stormy, so I'm not sure I'm the best example to follow. Honestly, I'd be happy enough just setting some doctrine and just watching the battles rather than controlling them. Are naval limitation treaties common? I'm 4 games in and I've only had one applied to be in a peace deal. I like designing ships and all, but trying to work around a treaty limitation would be an interesting twist instead of just building bigger and bigger (and then only being able to afford one ship, I can't help myself though).

Wooper posted:We may have lost the war but you are a hero, admiral Arglebargle III. It's funny, I ended the game having never built the BBs I wanted to but probably put the Italian navy in a great position going forward. I built scads of light cruisers and submarines, never fought a modern dreadnought engagement, and ruled the Mediterranean with commerce raiding. I forced Austria-Hungary out of a war without an engagement larger than a cruiser clash. Now the Regia Marina will have a huge number of light cruisers to escort their aircraft carriers, and only a handful of modern battleships to be useless targets in the future. The navy named a new aircraft carrier after me, which I thought was a nice touch at the end that acknowledged the BB era was short-lived.

It would only really be effective in nighttime engagements. Otherwise youll get shot to pieces in a daytime engagement, regardless that your ship can do 30kts.
