FRINGE posted:1e/2e resurgence! With recent re-release of the AD&D 1st Edition Player's Handbook and Monster Manual, I'd like to do a straight-up classic dungeon crawl. You'll be dropped into the first room of a dungeon, find treasure, slay monsters, and maybe get out alive. I'll be using a variety of random generation tables to create the dungeon, then mapping it out like so: quote:You are in an antechamber where visitors seeking further access to the crypt are made to wait. Large stone pillars cut across the center of the room. You can see open passageways to your left and right, and a wooden door on the far end. Character Creation: * If you do not have a copy of AD&D 1e, OSRIC will do just as well. Grab that instead. * No need to give me a detailed backstory. * We start at level 1 * For stats, roll 3d6 twelve times, take the 6 best rolls and assign them to your attributes in any order you want * Take the maximum HP for your hit die * Magic-Users get to pick which spells they start with Starting Equipment: * In order to keep character creation quick and easy, assume you already have the following: 6 torches; tinderbox, flint and steel; wineskin/waterskin; winter blanket; one week's dry rations; 2 large sacks; 50' silk rope; chalk; grappling hook; 100' hemp rope; hooded lantern; 3 flasks of oil; iron spikes/pitons; 10' pole; map or scroll case; small metal mirror * Not that I plan on tracking things like rations and torch consumption strictly, but just so you can assume you have them when deciding what you want to do * Fighters start with Splint Mail (AC 4), plus either a two-handed weapon or a one-handed weapon and a small shield * Thieves start with their tools, Leather Armor (AC 8) and a melee weapon of their choice * Magic-Users start with a dagger * Clerics start with Leather Armor (AC 8) and a melee weapon of their choice * Everyone also starts with a ranged weapon of their choice that they can use, and 20 rounds of ammo * However, you do start with 0 gold. This will also make it easier to track XP since we're going to use XP gained for gold retrieved Other notes: * While we'll be mapping out the dungeon, combat will be done mostly in theater-of-the-mind style: whoever is in the front ranks will be hit before the ones in the back are, and you can fill in details based on what you think the room would contain from what has been laid out * Skill checks will be done by rolling 3d6 and aiming to get equal to or less than the relevant stat * This will be run via PbP with a 24-48 hr turnaround, and this will be both the OOC and the gameplay thread. * I'm looking for as few as 4 to as many as 6 players, depending on what the response is like. * PM me or for any questions! EDIT: Weapon Specialization is active for Fighters: quote:Weapon specialization may be selected during character generation. Fighters may take a second proficiency in the same weapon as the first, granting them one extra attack every 2 rounds with the weapon (hence 3/2 attacks with a melee weapon at 1st level, 2/1 at 7th and 5/2 at 13th), +1 to hit and +2 damage owing to their skill. gradenko_2000 fucked around with this message at 12:09 on Jul 17, 2015 |

Baedrik the Scarred A half-elf raised amongst humans, Baedrik found himself never fully fitting in amongst the cities. Instead he turned towards the worship of Elhonna and took on the position of ranger, guarding humanity from the wilds. Now he's heard the call of the gods beckoning him to seek greater fortunes, and to take the offense against whatever could harm both nature and civilization. quote:Race: Half-Elf ProfessorCirno fucked around with this message at 03:30 on Sep 2, 2015 |

So how does a Multi-class character work for like, proficiencies & stuff? Like a Half-Orc Fighter|Assassin, would he get 4 weapons from Fighter and 3 from Assassin? How's that work with Weapon Spec?

ProfessorCirno posted:I have no idea what can or can't be dual wielded. Is it everything??? The rules for two-weapon fighting are in the DMG, or page 123 of OSRIC. * The off-hand weapon must be a dagger or a hand axe * You will have a -2 attack roll penalty on your main hand * You will have a -4 attack roll penalty on your off hand * Your DEX modifier will work to off-set the penalty, so 16 DEX for a +1 missile bonus to hit would result in a -1 penalty for the main hand and a -3 penalty for the off hand EDIT: No special rules for darts, I'm afraid. Those weren't until 2e.

ProfessorCirno posted:I have no idea what can or can't be dual wielded. Is it everything??? Captain Bravo posted:Can I dual wield throwing darts as a warrior? If you're using the linked OSRIC, page 128: quote:Two-Weapon Fighting: If a character desires to fight with one weapon in each hand, the off-hand weapon must be either a dagger or a hand axe. The weapon in the primary hand attacks with a –2 modifier, and the off-hand weapon attacks at –4. The character’s dexterity bonus (or penalty) for missile weapons is added to both attacks. Thus, a character with a dexterity of 3 would be attacking at -5/-7. However, although penalties can be offset, this rule can never result in a bonus to attacks! The off-hand weapon cannot be used to affect parrying. e: beat

Generic Octopus posted:So how does a Multi-class character work for like, proficiencies & stuff? Each race's description has some specific notes on the multi-classing restriction. I'm going to say that for Half-Orcs, you'll have as many profs as the Fighter and will gain additional profs as the Fighter does, but only single-class Fighters can take specializations.

Hand Axes are a melee weapon that can be thrown, correct? Does that mean that a fighter can take three specializations in them as a melee weapon other than a polearm or two-handed sword? Red Thorn, Elvish Berserker An outcast from Elvish society, for being altogether too bloodthirsty, Red Thorn made his way to the "less civilized" lands, where his skills were in much greater demand. Although the rejection of his people stings, Red Thorn bears it, for he knows that one day he will return, victorious and wealthy, and build a bigass loving castle right at the base of the biggest loving tree in his home forest. Lorelei, Elven Assassin A recent upheaval within her guild left Lorelei with a harsh choice: continue to serve the foul Half-Orc who usurped control, or leave the territory under the guild's purview until she could scrape together enough coin & influence to establish a guild of her own...or reclaim the one she left. pre:Race: Elf (+1 Dex, -1 Con) Class: Assassin Stats: Str: 12 Dex: 17 Con: 12 Int: 11 Wis: 11 Cha: 12 Weapon Profs: Longsword, Shortbow, Dagger Gear: Longsword Shortbow Quiver of Arrows (20) Leather Armor Thieves Tools Adventuring Gear How closely are we following Encumbrance rules? 'cause while there are bonuses to maintaining a certain weight, the bookeeping gets kinda painful. This isn't really relevant yet, but what happens if someone hits their racial cap for a class? Like, Red Thorn would be capped at Fighter 5 it seems...would he just stop gaining levels?

I'm not going to track encumbrance strictly. We'll just have some instances where the party will be slowed down if you decide to haul a stone statue across the dungeon for whatever reason. Also, no racial level limits, and anyone that wants to modify their character in light of that can do so now.

Okay, deadline for apps has passed, and I've selected these six to be our first party: Devon Aidendale, Human Fighter - Lightning Lord Baedrik the Scarred, Half-Elf Ranger/Cleric - ProfessorCirno Birrili, Gnome Illusionist - CommaToes Red Thorn, Elf Fighter - Captain Bravo Eitri Son of Durnir, Dwarf Thief - Ratpick Louis Kang, Human Druid - NAGA LIU KANG The way I've decided to simulate the passage of time is that it'll take the party 1 turn (representing ~10 minutes) to move to and explore a new room, or retrace their steps through 2 previously explored rooms, or any other action that takes around that long to do. Assume that you're already searching for traps and treasure without having to explicitly declare it, because of course you are. After 3 turns/30 minutes, I make a check for wandering monsters: roll 1d6 and you get wandering monsters on a 1. Events may cause the wandering monster checks to happen more or less frequently. You all have iron pitons, so once you find a room that has all doors as its entryways you may secure yourselves in it and take a rest to eat rations, recharge spells and regain some health. Anyway, this is our opening scene as you're dropped into the dungeon: quote:You are in an antechamber where visitors seeking further access to the crypt are made to wait. Large stone pillars cut across the center of the room. You can see open passageways to your left and right, and a wooden door on the far end. You can take time to introduce yourselves to the rest of the party, engage in some banter and so on, but I'll need two things at the minimum: 1. A marching order: who takes point, who is in the front ranks, and who is in the back. 2. Which direction does the party go?
