G1 Finals- Sunday August 15th from Ryogoku Koukigan (Sumo Hall) 2 AM EDT/7 AM BST

IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Title Match:Young Bucks(c) vs. reDRagon
IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title Match:KUSHIDA(c) vs. Ricochet
G1 Climax 25 Finals:Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Shinsuke Nakamura

remainder of card TBA

I'm very new to NJPW or clicked on this thread by mistake, what's this G1 Climax thing?

It's a multiple day, round robin tournament consisting of two blocks of 10 wrestlers each. The winners of each block face each other in the Finals at Sumo Hall, which is traditionally considered the second biggest NJPW show of the year. Winning the G1 is a very prestigious honor itself, but the champion also receives the opportunity to challenge for the IWGP Heavyweight title at WrestleKingdom 10 in the Tokyo Dome.
The format's done a little bit different this year. Instead of both blocks competing each day and a couple wreslers from each block getting an off day each show, this year's tour is split up featuring 5 matches from each Block on alternating shows and the guys from the other block as well as non G1 wrestlers are going to be in multiman matches in the prelims. This does result in the individual shows being a little less packed but will hopefully result in less strain on the wrestlers.

I was going to use some info from Mike Sempervive's G1 preview here, but that would be way too much poo poo to scroll past.

Check it out if you want an intro to the wrestlers and info about their history in the G1. It's pretty good other than the fact that he apparently thinks Gedo and Jado are brothers.

Please. If it's even half as good as Kota's match with Yoshihiko was, I'll watch it on repeat.

Also it's weird looking at the brackets how much there are a few maybes there, but booking would normally dicate that the final 4 are AJ, Tanahashi, Nakamura and Okada. I look forward to seeing how they book it so this isn't the case.

The IWGP Champ hasn't won the G1 since the Tokyo Dome title shot became part of the prize, so no one knows. That would make sense though. My guess is if Okada makes the Finals he'd be losing to Tanahashi only to finally get revenge at the Dome.

The cool thing about this year is that there's multiple plausible winners.

I think the other big 2 who aren't champs are the favorites, but Ibushi as a dark horse can't be ruled out and neither can Okada winning as champ to really cement himself as the ace. The main problem with Ibushi winning imo is that I think Okada should retain at WK10 and Ibsuhi really needs to win his next big match after losing against Nakamura and Styles. I'd love to see him win the IC in the Domes semi-main though.

Welp, my wife is in Japan on an archaeological dig for the entirety of this tourney, and although I have the money to visit this year and hit some shows (that was an issue last year) I don't have the vacation time. Ah well, at least NJPW World exists this year. ~80 hours of wrestling will no doubt soothe my loneliness/jealousy.

That 8/14 Sumo Hall card with the final Block A matches looks rather weak for that venue. Tanahashi vs AJ is of course a main event caliber match anywhere, but the rest of that card? Of course, it's probably smart to keep in mind that Makabe and Tenzan are more over with Japanese fans than they are with most of us.

Roddy's too important to ROH right now to spend a month in Japan. Elgin doesn't have much going on storyline-wise at the moment so it makes sense he got sent over. I wish Cedric had gone over too, but he did just have that big heel turn and he might not be plausible as a heavyweight. Then again, Takahashi is a heavyweight for some reason so the weight classes really are that dumb and arbitrary.
