I was suspicious before, but now I'm pretty convinced Nora is the fix this season. Her sheep's mouth looked weird and the face paint was really bland and featureless. Even before the extra hour zombie dad looked way cooler and was a better match for the challenge.

I wanted Ben to tank so bad this week. I just wanted to watch the worst loving meltdown on television history.

Motherfucker knocked it so far out of the park he made it to another field.

Glad Nora Is still in it.

As for the bully vs the dad. I would have went for the dad, but I get the judges going for the bully.

Damnit I wanted to see Ben crash and loving burn.

Man, the judging this season has been so screwed up. I'm legitimately bummed/annoyed. :( Poor Scott.

Two of the three finalists are inconsistent at best (although Ben totally earned his spot), and a lot of Nora's stuff has seemed flat to me... this is gonna be a trainwreck.

I like Nora so much as a person and think she has a bright future on a makeup team of sorts, but as a solo competitor she really is more hit or miss than the editing has made her out to be.

Scott did get screwed.

Ben is odd, but he knocked that creepy uncle so far out of the park he totally earned a shot at the finals. I mean goddamn son.

Ben's model really sold the crap out of that makeup too. If the model had done nothing with it, I don't think it would have been as well liked or as creepy.

So Syfy previewed the first 15mins of the finale last night at 10pm for some reason and my DVR recorded it. I watched it, spoilers below.

In lieu of a family member, or significant other, Ben teleconferences with his dog. (He has a lady who he refers to as his "friend" but barely acknowledges her.)

Evan quote of the episode, "It's hard to lead people and tell them what to do when I don't know what I'm doing."

I'm quickly getting the impression this is a very producer-meddled, politics-heavy, budget-slashed season with massive behind the scenes troubles.

Yep.

Ben utterly owned that one. It was the best thing all season.

... Not a coincidence that it was also a 3 day challenge again. Jesus Christ. If they make Focus challenges a thing next season, it might be my last (and it might be THEIR last). It looks like the ratings have taken notice of the sudden drop in quality.

He basically has no idea what he wanted to do with them and in turn made two very different characters with no idea what they are to be.

After watching tonight's episode and seeing what the finale challenge is with them making a short film, I can surmise this is where all the budget money went towards. That can't be cheap at all.
I liked Nora's characters a whole lot, hers looked the most interesting next to Ben's. I just don't think Evan will win this, calling it now.

Evan shouldn't even be one of the final three, Scott should be.

The fact that someone as weak as Evan even made the final 5 shows that this show is running out of talented contestants.

Patrick Tatopoulos' reactions to their screen tests makeups was hilarious. Nora: You're pretty much good to go! Ben: eh, a few small changes, you're nearly there. Evan: it's all wrong, start over.

The only thing that worries me about this is the typical reality show editing, so everyone roots for the underdog. Nora and Meg have been my favorite since the beginning, for entirely different reasons, so I'm really hoping Nora pulls it off. I feel that she's been the most consistent contestant and she seems like a great person to work with.

I'm just so happy that Evan didn't win, from the judges's comments throughout his bits that seemed to be where this was headed.

Really feel bad for BenPlowGuy, if he hadn't used any prosthetics on his female character and just went straight up beauty make-up, he probably would have run away with it. Nora's a cooler person though, so whatever.

When they previewed the next season and said, "Tune in to Face Off in January 2016!" I literally said "No thanks!" out loud.

Definitely getting the sense that the scaled back feel of this season was to offset the cost of the finale challenge. Don't know how I feel about that. Almost feels like the best way to rejuvenate Face Off without blowing up the budget would be to start the season with eight people and have all the challenges be working towards a short film project every 2 or 4 episodes. Definitely need more heft before the finale, these "focus" challenges and the gauntlet are just too insubstantial.

I mean, in a perfect world, every challenge would be 3 days and the finale would be in the style of this finale, but that's probably way to expensive for a basic cable reality contest show with declining ratings. But then that does nothing to address the dearth of talented contestants.

Maybe Face Off should do a season where each episode is literally two contestants facing off. Anthony vs. Laura. Eric Fox vs. Roy. Missy Munster vs. the crazy guy who walked off in S2 E1.

Meh.

You might be right, the scale of the finale was pretty big. I liked the format though because we saw the artist's actually doing their desired jobs instead of just doing the makeups in a studio. Overall I like Nora's aesthetic in her makeups and I'm happy that she won, but I liked Evan's over Ben's. Evan's mutated characters were good but I didn't like the simpleness of the wanderer. I just didn't like Ben's character designs a lot.

Kind of disappointed the 10th season isn't another all-star roundup.

Yeah, Ben NAILED the two make-ups and blew the third, so Nora really did deserve the win this time. It's a shame. Ben's crime was taking lovely support people, while Nora kept getting the best options. He and the only other competent guy on his team nailed the two they focused on while the others just hosed up.

That said I liked this finale format. I want them to keep this for future seasons, it's so much better than the loving dance-offs and stunt shows. I just hope Focus Challenges stop being a thing, forever.

I wonder what combination of factors led to the caliber of contestants never really changing over the season. For comparison, look at Top Chef. The first season or two consisted largely of personal chefs, caterers, and line cooks. Eventually, though, it started drawing people who already had their own restaurant, or were high up at respected restaurants, or had otherwise earned some kind of acclaim in their industry.

Face Off's contestants, on the other hand, are almost exclusively people trying to get started in the industry. Everyone in this season's finale said something like "first time on a set!" It's weird that they never managed to get contestants who could say something like "I worked on [recognizable movie/TV show]." I don't even mean lead artists or department heads or however it's organized, but at least people who already have some industry experience under their belt.

Oh, that's easy. Many of the established guys don't think of Face Off as a great show and roll their eyes when you mention it. Also, they have busy schedules to keep and not much time for this kind of stuff. And then there's the fact that in the "real world" it's quite rare for someone to do everything from design to sculpting to moulding to applying on set.

The thing I've always found odd about Face/Off is there are only a few examples of winning a round mattering at all, aside from reputation.

Literally safe is just as good as winner, 9 times out of 10. That's always been a weak spot. At least throw the round winners a bone.

Well the main winner gets like 100K, a Fiat (lol), and a trip to a Kryolan makeup factory or something. I mean it's a pretty good prize.

The best the round winners ever get is non-elimination for the first few rounds (which is handy, admittedly, although they usually wind up not needing it, or it's a team challenge the next round so they will always say "although I have immunity, Becky doesn't, so I have to give 200 percent!") and maybe a choice of first pick of whatever the next challenge is - again, handy, but they're usually good enough to do well with whatever anyway.

I guess the big draw for some of them is basically doing a portfolio piece before whatever guest judge is on - I remember there was one episode where the judge was basically like "you're coming to work for me." Roy maybe?

The problem was, it was over produced.

Fox and Co got a pilot too. There were also the pumpkin people. And the body paint show. They all had kind of the same lay outs for their pilot episodes.

It was stuff happens, then, "OH NO! SOMETHING UNPREDICTABLE HAPPENED. HOW ARE WE GOING TO FINISH IN TIME!" then, they finish in time, and everyone loves it. Great job!

Seriously, I don't care. I want to see them do work, and not have fabricated problems to work around.

Seriously, I was talking to my wife about how they need to make a special effects reality show that's like Holmes on Homes - just honest people doing honest work, no fake drama, no obviously contrived "twists." The deadlines are real, and sometimes they're missed and all he can do is apologize. The twist is usually bad weather.

I could see myself spending an entire Sunday on my couch, watching people make monster make-ups like that.

I will not watch bullshit like the fake deadlines that were made for Foxy and Co. (btw "Foxy" is a horrible nickname for Eric Fox), or contrived poo poo like when Monster Man's boss's wife was like, "why don't we fire him!" in the most unconvincing manner possible.

I finally caught up with the drat finale. Good on Nora. She deserved it, although let's be straight here her win was as much a "she fits in with the crowd" win as it was for her makeup. I'm not knocking that, that's super-important for professionals, but a spade is a spade. I dug Evan's final makeups but he was never a lock. Ben could have come from behind but yeah, he totally hosed one of his 3 makeups. I wasn't crazy about his alien-monster things either-- the mouths didn't work for me.

Yeah this show needs to take some serious time off though. Cultivate a better crop of contestant and rework their structure a bit so the prizes/challenges are a bit better, and generally give the show some time to breathe. Part of the appeal is watching pseudo-professionals work under horrible deadlines but the show behind that shouldn't be under an even worse crunch.
