Odd place to install a stump in the first place, were they going for a self sustaining wood pile?

It's a like 40" LCD. Which is working fine plugged in to a power strip that's going to a different outlet now. The other plug is for the streambox.

Not sure what happened. I think I'm going to place a powerstrip with a low-profile plug in to the outlet when I replace it, maybe something shifted around and caused something weird to happen.

Is it normally behind a piece of furniture? That can definitely jam a plug at a bad angle and cause that to happen, those 90⁰ plugs are a great solution.

It sits right above one of the dressers now, it's in a somewhat weird spot because there used to be a big vanity there that I pulled out. My shirts and stuff tend to get stacked up there and I'm guessing something happened that put some pressure on the plug.

Protip: If you decide to add an extension on the house, and you decide that you've made one of the ground wires a bit too short for the outlet you're installing, do yourself a favor and loving fix it then. Otherwise, when you decide "let's just wire nut the grounds together and not bother to put it in the outlet", someone's going to be cursing your name and your ancestors 2 decades later when they decide that they'd like the outlet to be to code and actually have proper ground.

Anyway, I replaced that burned outlet, but it's still dead (as is the GFI outlet in the bathroom that I'm pretty positive links off of it). Not sure what to do at this point to fix the loving thing.

Got my first Covid shot on Monday.

My latest medication regimen juuuuust isn't quite enough to actually get me healing, so we're going to try me on something else. My ability to do house tasks is going to be spotty unless I'm more generally stable.

On the home front, we had to have Archie in for surgery a few weeks ago, so we're watching his recovery. The sectional delivery has been pushed back to like end of May now, which is just super. I do want to try to get the fixture in the bedroom soon as the temps here look like they're going to raise pretty rapidly over the next week.

Jan 11, 2009

Since weather is improving I've given a list of things to the guy up the street that does general yard tasks. Currently on the list is to get the patio in to shape (needs a bunch of weeding dug back out, flatten the surface, probably need to install a plant barrier, put the tiles back down, and need to figure out some kind of grout/gap filler to hopefully keep the growth down, remove the old and busted railroad ties and replace with ground contact lumber), remove the tree that's split, remove the stump, and clear out the flower beds so we can start thinking about planting stuff. Let's see how he does.

Now to rebuild that back wall so I can use it for storage.

Prices "seem" pretty comparable to what they were before. Could be because there's a lot of lumber industry right in the ol' backyard so supply is better.

Anyway, I HAVE to get a new roof on the shed pretty much immediately so I'm going to have to pay whatever those costs are regardless.

MikeyTsi
Jan 11, 2009

Yeah, the OSB for the roof is going to be like $1700 alone, so we're trying to hold off and see if the costs normalize a bit.

Anyway, got a project done:

Partner decided what she wanted to do on the unpainted kitchen wall, so we got paint picked out and she painted that. (we re-used the green from the bathroom, and the second color is a purple). Since we had to take everything off the wall anyway, we decided to upgrade the hardware for the tea shelf, as it was bending forward and making me nervous as all gently caress.

Was able to re-use one of the wall mounts, so I just set that in then got the level out so I could get things lined up right and mark the second hole.

Think I did pretty good.

I rather like the style, and I think it goes with the style that's set up for the wall rather well.

We also went through our tea collection and got rid of stuff we didn't want (mostly like celestial seasonings stuff my mom had that we'll never drink) and re-organized when we put things back on.

Next steps is she wants to do some art on the wall, I'll post some pictures once that's complete; and we're going to get some actual tea storage containers for the ones we have in non-sealable bags so we can keep them fresh.

We also got the black-out blinds cut to the right size for the bedroom today, so should be installing those soon, have a couple of bookcases to assemble, and the sectional we ordered in February is finally getting delivered this week, so we'll be moving stuff around for that. I'll post again once I have a new living room setup to share, and once we have some more done in the library I'll post that too.

Also also, I've got the guy that pulled out that stump working on other things, almost have the tree out that was bending over the house and he's been clearing out the flower beds. Hope to get some flowers and such planted for next year.

Also also also, went to open up all the windows on Saturday and discovered a colony of ants really needed some wifi and had taken up residence in my router. That was gross, had to take the whole thing apart to clean it.

Here's some progress pics of what's going on in the yard:

Going around the front of the house, some is ready to put the brick edging back in.

Going around to the front of the house. Dude got a little "zealous" with foliage removal (there used to be a few bushes here).

The center area where the big tree is. I think I may eventually want to put a birdbath or something here.

Around the side. I may eventually take that concrete out; it was for a chain-link fence that is long gone.

He kept THIS bush for some reason.

Getting the patio area ready to get bricks put in. I still need to replace the railroad ties, flatten this down, put down plant barrier, then re-place the pavers.

What's left of the tree that had split and was bending over the roof.

Big root intrusion. I'll pull this up and remove the roots under the sidewalk when I'm ready to pour new concrete.

Not great. We do have plans to take care of this along with the roof and such, waiting to see if wood prices go down by end of August.

Stairs got pulled. Will replace them when the new porch floor is put in. Probably should break down that pile of concrete that's been there forever and haul it out too.

Big pile of yard detritus. May re-use some of it for flower beds, the rest will either slowly go out with yard waste or I'll rent a truck and do a haul to the transfer station.

MikeyTsi
Jan 11, 2009

Dude that's been working on the yard has been going after sugar ants with an intensity that's bordering on fanatical. Yeah, they're annoying but you don't need to spend time digging out the colonies, we can just ring the holes with diatomaceous earth and bait them.

New Couch, who dis?

FINALLY showed up on Friday, I ordered it beginning of February. I think, if it existed, we could've used one more seat space on one end, but it's pretty nice.

One couch we're going to take to the dump, the other we've moved in to the library and will set up for seating once we've got that set up and organized.

On the house front, I figured since I'm not doing the roof right now due to how insane OSB cost is, I'd see about maybe doing the fence. nope. The pickets and hardware are still reasonable, but the post and rail costs would be an absolute killer. I may re-do the fence on the north end though, I only need to replace one post (and already have one), will be re-using most of the rails with new hardware, and as mentioned the price on the pickets seems fine at the moment. I'll either just buy a few ground contact to do the middle rail or just, not and buy and install new rails once prices are less insane.

Basically in these days the response is.. don't do poo poo to your house unless you need to / want to pay a premium. Everything costs more, Wood, Concrete, Metal stuff.. basicaly if it's not paint or tools it's going to be covid premium priced.

I planned on doing a fence this year.. NOpe money's sitting in the bank.

I hired a guy 2 months ago to get concrete done it'll come some day. I'm on his long list because he quoted me before he saw what "summer" concrete was gunna cost. He can't hire anyone either so I've been waiting and waiting. I can't get anyone else in until October or next year.

I was going to build shelves and do some other carpentry in my finished basement.. a sheet of bad but not OSB plywood is now $76 I think I'll wait. At least the Plastic lovely trim is cheap so I can put the crown molding up in the basement.

Our local guidelines are something like 50 feet from a structure and no overhanging trees.

MikeyTsi
Jan 11, 2009

Decided to look it up, here's the county regs:

Recreational fire rules
Must be built in a metal or concrete fire pit
Not grow larger than 3-feet in diameter
Be set in a clear spot free from vegetation for at least 10-feet in width
Be at least 25-feet from any structure
Allow 20-foot high clearance from overhanging branches
Be watched at all times by an alert person with equipment capable of putting the fire out

Very similar to ours except for the vegetation part, I think it's a 5 foot radius. I'll need to check on that one.

MikeyTsi
Jan 11, 2009

Renton adds "flammable items" to the list, so it'll have to be 25' from any fences as well. But I'd need to have it away from the fence to be away from the pear tree and the outbuilding anyway.

One of the dude's extended family in theory has a line on some cheap OSB, the seller claims he's got a stockpile because he's a contactor that's out of work and is liquidating some inventory.

I guess we'll see. I've stressed several times that everything needs to be above board or I can just wait.

So, why haven't I posted.

Well, first off I had a little vacation, where MY GIRLFRIEND became MY FIANCE. 😀

And after getting back from that Sunday before last I spent that week in progressively greater pain.

And I'm now in the hospital. Turns out that pain was from a 150cc abcsess in my pelvis.

Things seem to be on the mend now, but wanted to give an update. Probably looking at another 1-2 weeks of recovery after I'm out of here so no house stuff for a bit.

Feeling better (got around to replacing the back brakes on the Honda), so I should be doing some work on the house soon.

First thing I need to do is swap out the GFI outlet on the back patio, I think it's getting more progressively shot with age and it's randomly tripping.

Also, since wood prices have readjusted I'm hopefully going to get the supplies I need to get the roof on the shed replaced before we get in to the rainy season next week. While we're down there I'm going to get a new fence post so I can at least get the broken one on the north side replaced; I'm figuring I'm probably waiting until spring to replace the south side fence and do the main re-work on the north one, but with a new post we can at least avoid further damage when the wind starts coming.

MikeyTsi

Spoke too soon, start feeling better from the abcess, and then my GI tract decides to be super unhelpful and start a major flare. Get to have a specialist jam a camera up my butt again early next month, so that'll be,.... super.

Got something for the dog to bark at:

Haven't installed it yet, house is wired for doorbell but it's been disconnected for years, and the external wiring was exposed, got brittle and broke off too close so I need to pull of a trim piece so I can extend the wiring before I can mount it.
