Dentists basically aren't doing any complex work on the NHS because as soon as they do they're pretty much earning below minimum wage. For doing a filling a dentist will earn on average somewhere between £20-25. The additional PPE they have to buy can cost in the region of £15-20 per patient and you would be the only patient in that room for the hour. If they do it privately you're picking up the bill for the PPE instead. With the way the NHS contracts work it's just not currently viable to do anything other than a checkup on the NHS.
