I never knew this, and now I get why you guys were saying Rousey is going to smear her opponent into a bloody stain in the Octagon tomorrow. http://www.mmanews.com/roddy-piper-tells-story-of-ronda-rousey-asking-permission-to-use-rowdy-nickname/ That should be fun to watch.

He beat cancer, cut some of the greatest promos ever, wrestled a classic match with Bret Hart at Mania, and saved the world from zombie yuppies. Piper was one of the all-time greats. Mods, please consider the request on page 1 of the thread to rename the Pagoda to Piper's Pit.

I'll never forget this and the accompanying story of Andre dumping out the makeup remover and replacing it with water...leaving Roddy to travel several flights, in public, painted entirely half black. I remember seeing that match and thinking "can he DO that??"

On the action figure talk, he was one of my first ones too. Him and Bossman. They were the ones that wound up to do a move. Dont remember what Boss Man did but you could wind up the arm on the Roddy figure to make him do a haymaker. I'm going home this weekend for the first time in three years. I hope it's still there.

A moment nobody talks about that shows just how good Roddy was at pissing off a crowd.... When Roddy was working in LA and San Fran in the 80's, he worked as a top heel against Chavo Sr. One week he did something to humiliate Chavo, and it pissed the largely hispanic crowd off fierce, because the Guerreros, even then, were wrestling royalty. Next week, Piper comes out with his bagpipes for an apology. He says that as a token of his sincerity, he wants to play the Mexican national anthem for the crowd. He proceeds to play La Cucaracha. They had to take away several deadly weapons next show.

Real sad to hear he has died, particularly at such a comparatively young age - but hey, the dude got cancer and a decade later his cause of death is dying in his sleep cancer-free, so every day was a gift basically. RIP.

I still rank Piper as the best talker I've ever seen in the business, a few WCW missteps notwithstanding. Seeing his 80s work was mind blowing, the guy knew how to maintain intensity and still sound relatively eloquent, no matter how coked up.
