Update 33 - Logan's Confusion
Syphon Filter Logan's Shadow Episode 5 - Syria
The Agency is no more. With no resources, Teresa gets Gabe back into the field for one purpose: find Lian. The trail takes him straight to Bitar's desert compound where Cordell is trying to destroy it utterly, hopefully silencing both Bitar and Lian. Working with beleaguered Army Rangers, Gabe reunites with Lian in the penultimate chapter of Syphon Filter.
Next week, with luck, the final update of SF happens. Bring booze!
quote:
Ep5-1
Evidence #53
Dog-tag. I’ve seen a lot of special forces die the last two weeks due to Cordell’s deception and ineptitude. Desert Scorpions are an elite Army Ranger division, meant to be the tip of the spear in the advance on al-Jamil’s hidden bunker. Night time air-drops provide an element of stealth and surprise, but in Cordell’s haste, he ordered the paratroopers to jump in broad daylight. Enemy anti-aircraft guns killed this scorpion before he hit the ground. –Gabe Logan
Evidence #54
Anti-tank mine. The desert scorpions had the element of surprise, numbers, and military superiority. Even if you discount Cordell’s ineptitude out of the equation, we should have easily destroyed the al-Jamil defenses. But they had the support of a strong benefactor. For years, the Syrian government has denied accusations they supported or harbored terrorists. The markings on these anti-tank mines are hard proof that maybe they aren’t so distant from groups like al-Jamil as they would have us believe. –Gabe Logan
Evidence #55
Leaflet. Written in Arabic, the leaflet dropped over the battlefield was written by a cultural specialist, and was intended to discourage the entrenched al-Jamil soldiers, get them to abandon their posts or risk dying. Cordell would have never allowed this message to be dropped, but since it had been standard procedure since airplanes had first been used in warfare, the Army didn’t bother to tell him. I hate to say that I agree with Cordell, but this ‘cultural specialist’ didn’t understand the al-Jamil warrior mentality. They lived for this day, and would never surrender. All this letter did was give them fair warning that we were coming. –Gabe Logan
Behind the Scenes
Evidence #56
How good a level looks is a combination of textures, mesh, and lighting. Without great textures, objects won’t have enough detail to be believable. Making great textures is not easy: they have to have detail without being repetitive, and they have to tile without seams.
Evidence #57
A ‘Radiosity Simulation Engine’ is used to create realistic lighting and shadows. Once the artist is done placing lights throughout the level, radiosity is used to ‘bounce’ the light off objects in realistic ways. This process creates highly realistic lighting and shadows.
Evidence #58
All mesh is built to a specific grid size. Artists must follow specific rules and guidelines when creating level art so that the 3D spaces will work for both player actions and gameplay mechanics. Objects and ledges, for example, must be specific heights and distances.
Evidence #59
Lyrics to ‘Logan’s Shadow’ by Azam Ali:
‘Like the faded spark of stars that pass
I stand scarred, in your shadow
Love is but a faint trace of a memory
So how can I speak of love’s dream
In this shell, in this dark, a needed faith, a needed spark.
Yet I long, that you’ll still come
So I try to outrun my past
Now between us like a shoreless sea
Can you still love me
Waiting for you to come and save me, waiting for you to come and save me
Will we stray in this doubt
in the remains of this light’
Evidence #60
Lyrics to ‘Secret’s Lament’ by Azam Ali:
‘In sorrow’s flood, I found my bliss
Shone splendidly in the light of your gaze
How faint sound of love concealed, of unspoken words
Unlived dreams, unloved love.
Caravans freighted with heroes of lost days
Bound silently heavenward where the heart waits
How faint the sound of love concealed of unspoken words
Unlived dreams, unlived love.’
Ep5-2
Evidence #61
Green beret tattoo. The dead Courier had a tattoo from his prior military service. Cordell hires only former intelligence agents or Special Forces soldiers; hardcore patriots afraid of nothing and willing to do anything in the name of national security. I’ve found many of them who have done just that and sacrificed their lives to recover the X-Z-2. As an employer, you couldn’t ask for more from your men. But these couriers didn’t die for national security. They died trying to cover up Cordell’s mess.
Code: D7V N8T H2WM –Gabe Logan
Evidence #62
Dog-tag. This was an aggressive operation, but the coordinated ground and air assaults would help soften enemy positions so that ground troops could advance. Desert Scorpions would recon enemy positions, and then radio for air support to destroy those targets. Computers guide modern missiles, but there’s still a degree of error, and this GI suffered for it. Stone used to tell me his own horror stories, and most always closed with, ‘There ain’t nothin’ friendly about friendly fire!” –Gabe Logan
Evidence #63
Letter from Rhamani. ‘Brother Ghassan, I wanted to congratulate you on al-Jamil’s recent victories defending our homeland. Good fortune has blessed my business interest, and it is my duty to provide al-Jamil from its fruit.
Do not despise my dealings with the westerners. I vow that my stomach turns in disgust, but I am setting them up to use their blind lust for our oil as a means to silently fleece and then public destroy them. For that, I need your assistance.
Enclosed you will find the sum of seven million Pounds to fund al-Jamil operations. Please spend them on the finest equipment and firepower that will assist your—no, our cause. You are commanding the last of the faithful. –Fawzi Rhamani’
Evidence #64
Shell casings. These automatic cannons were un-manned, heavy caliber machine guns designed for combat against armored vehicles such as tanks, APC’s, or helicopters. But these were leveled at light infantry units. Alpha Company had been decimated. If I ever make it out of this desert, I’ve got spent shell casings we can trace back to the manufacturer. And from there, to whoever supplied al-Jamil with their fortified weapons. –Gabe Logan
Ep5-3
Evidence #64
AIT Shipping Invoices. The last shipment of arms I tracked from Red Section were sold to Middle Eastern arms dealers Black Freedom, and then purchased by al-Jamil with funds given to them by Fawzi Rhamani, an Egyptian oil magnate and terrorism financier. Rhamani was killed by Bitar once al-Jamil’s zealousness encroached on his own business interests.
Although I had been tracking the shipments, I never confirmed the contents until now. Thankfully, none of Singularity’s chemical or biological weapons are listed here, but I am concerned to see a number of ‘AIT AS-4’ armored suites on the invoice. When I discovered these on the St. Helens, I figured they belonged to Cordell’s men, but this proves that Bitar had taken them onboard.
Mujari says the ‘AS-4’ is the next grade of Singularity’s ‘FCS Armor’ I encountered at Aerospace Integrated Technologies. That generation of electrical armor was tough enough. What the hell am I in for this time?
–Gabe Logan
Evidence #65
FAX. Cordell was in a race to secure Shen before France, Britain, or Russia could. It’s acceptable US policy to contract with Pakistani tribal leaders; Cordell did nothing wrong by hiring local mercenaries to secure Shen and hold him until NIOC forces could arrive. This FAX sent to al-Jamil via satellite phone from the Himalayas shows where things began to go south for Cordell. Even then, he still hadn’t done anything wrong. But he panicked, and set this entire chain of events into motion. He should have known that it’s not the original crime, but the cover-up that gets you into trouble. –Gabe Logan
Evidence #66
Letter. I had it backwards, figuring that Lian had run out on Shen when I recruited her away from CSS. Based on this letter, Shen ended their relationship, choosing work over a personal life, I felt guilty reading through their personal correspondence, but something occurred to me, a piece of the puzzle falling into place: The letter was addressed simply to ‘Lian Xing, at the American Embassy in Beijing.’ This means Shen had no means to get in contact with Lian, and neither did the embassy. I have no doubt Cordell intercepted the letter, passed it to Lian, and then sat back and waited for her to lead them to Shen. –Gabe Logan
Evidence #67
X-Z-2 schematics. Looking at the charcoal sketch, even I could appreciate the simple elegance of Shen’s device. It was small, fragile, and harmless looking, but had the potential to explode like an atom bomb. Shen grew up poor in a remote Chinese village and spent most of his adult life insulated from people by his government handlers. Mujari tells me that Shen’s innocence, naiveté, and brilliance were the perfect storm of genius necessary to design such a paradoxical device. –Gabe Logan

Finish line's in sight. Glad you went back and showed off the electric fence. By the way, did you see that Sony Bend announced a new IP? It'll be their first console game since Omega Strain. Based on what I've seen of it, if it's not Syphon Filter meets The Last Of Us, then they've failed at their job.
Looking forward to the final part. Great job all around guys. You've done this crazy series proud.

Cordell has gone a long time in this game without being revealed as a traitor. Given how many we've already faced and the fact that he's been loving with us at every turn it's impressive to now have someone who's just lovely at handling Gabriel Logan and procurement of weapons for the good of the US. who am I kidding, he's going to be the last boss right after we kill Bitar
That's pretty much been my thought during Logan's Shadow, waiting for the game to fully acknowledge that Cordell is a villain instead of doing everything it can to dance around the issue.
Then again, Syphon Filter doesn't exactly do subtlety, so Cordell being an obvious villain from minute one is no surprise.

I was actually referring to the execution of Jang Song Thaek, though I might have confused his death and the death of this other guy. Of course the hilarious thing about looking up Jang Song Thaek's execution is that at first reports were that he was 'fed to 120 wild dogs' and everyone bought that.
I did see an unsubstantiated liveleak video of a dude bound on his knees disappearing in a haze of red mist that was purported to be the defense minister guy but honestly it's North Korea so it's all an amazing mystery and I'm just going to accept I'm wrong and perpetuating hilarious untruths and no one from North Korea will ever come out and prove me wrong because they aren't allowed to use the internet.

Update 34 - Logan's Ascendance
Syphon Filter Logan's Shadow Episode 6 - Bitar's Stronghold
Having rescued Lian, Logan heads to Bitar's final stronghold, a dam where he is forcing Shen to build more X-Z-2 bombs. Lian and Gabe work together to infiltrate the dam, but personal issues flare up and the most dangerous of Bitar's fanatics resist as Gabe brings the unholy light of the Taser to all involved.
Syphon Filter LP Credits Reveal this spoiler when you've watched the last video all the way through.
My face:
What do I do now I don't have Syphon Filter anymore and the Taser has moved on! Oh well. You know I love you all. Thanks for sticking with it.
Final Evidence:
quote:
Ep6-1
Evidence #68
Ammunition casing. Something felt odd about the gun battle at the base of the dam. I had missed enemy targets, but the men still died. I chocked that up to the chaos of war; friendly fire or a lucky ricochet. Then I found a spent shell casing. Enough countries have adopted NATO ammunition standards that a single bullet can’t tell a story. China refused to adopt these standards in favor of their ‘superior’ ammunition, and that’s how I knew this bullet belonged to Trinidad. The only question now; does this story have a happy or tragic ending? –Gabe Logan
Evidence #69
Truck fender. Lian used too much C4. Her job was to create a topside diversion assisting my covert entry into the dam from below. Lian knows better, but she was rushing things. I knew it was a mistake to bring her on the mission. She’s way too close to things, and wants to save Shen, even at the peril of our entire mission. What she doesn’t realize is that now that she’s in harm’s way, I’ve got something personal at stake as well. –Gabe Logan
Evidence #70
Body. The dead security guard stashed inside the control booth had a tattoo from prior service in the Syrian Republican Guard. Unlike Iraq’s force of the same name, this military division had a proud connotation. Retired now, he thought his job as a civilian security guard would be a safe way to earn a comfortable living. The technique used in cutting the throat indicates CSS training. This can’t be Lian’s work; it must be Trinidad’s. –Gabe Logan
Shadowed Intel
Evidence #71
Guiding Angel. Logan destroyed the transformer substations, but never realized the danger he was truly in because I eliminated waves of enemies before they could overtake him.
Logan will die soon enough, but not before leading me to Shen.
I’ve been behind him the entire time, providing surgical but surreptitious assistance with my blade and my rifle. The CSS psychological profile indicated that Logan is trusting to a fault. He is still wearing the tracking device I planted on him at Gebel Tyorma; as he sat, drugged in the interrogator’s chair, I moved close, straddled him, and teased him with my similar appearance to Lian Xing. –Trinidad
Evidence #72
Sharpshooter. My sniping accuracy at Ash Shaddaha shows why I hold the academy record for long range marksmanship. CSS agents can kill up close with their hands, or from over a mile away with perfect accuracy.
Martial arts were invented in China, but so was gunpowder. –Trindad
Ep 6-2
Evidence #73
Destroyed turbine. I’ve seen the design of Shen’s device. The counter-balance to its simple design is the amount of power required to achieve the perpetual charge. Three turbines had been running past capacity for days, causing this turbine to crumble under the strain. Bitar’s close to achieving his holy vision, and for the first time since I’ve known him, he’s gotten excited and lost his patience. To date, that patience and stoicism had been his deadliest weapon. –Gabe Logan
Evidence #74
Tracking device. The device is Chinese, but the electronic map was universal enough; a GPS tracking receiver. This is proof that Trinidad is somewhere in the dam complex. The target she was tracking isn’t moving; probably dead. Why did she ditch the receiver? Did she find what she was looking for? My question was answered soon as I started walking away: the receiver made a loud beeping noise and the target started to me. She was tracking me. –Gabe Logan
Evidence #75
Employee badge. The dead power room engineer had never been part of al-Jamil. His only mistake was coming to work at the Nah al Khabur dam on the same day al-Jamil commandeered the dam to charge Shen’s devices. Even Bitar recognized the need for a skilled engineer to manage stresses on the dam machinery as they tried squeezing every ounce of energy out of the turbines. The cut throat is the same as the security guard’s. CSS handiwork. Trinidad is here. –Gabe Logan
Evidence #76
Cordell’s financial records. The courier was carrying several discs that didn’t seem to have anything to do with NIOC business. Teresa cracked the encrypted files on a microdisc and discovered something interesting: all of Robert Cordell’s personal financial records going back ten years. Of special interest was an order, issue to Cordell’s blind trust, to dump 30,000 shares of stock in World-Cal Petroleum, early last year.
I had wondered about Cordell’s involvement with Night Watch and the Rhamani case. I know that Cordell was a hard rear end, did whatever it took to ‘get the job done.’ But it never occurred to me that he would profit personally if World-Cal got the Egyptian pipeline contracts. IT now makes sense why Cordell was working so hard to discredit our case.
Code: JTS C9F S8DR –Gabe Logan
Ep6-3
Evidence #77
Broken glasses. I recognized the broken glasses as those worn by Trinidad in Kuranca. Her eyesight must be terrible. The prescription was strong, so she’d certainly be working at less than full capacity without them. They had fit her well, so how did she manage to lose them? It appears she was caught by surprise, and lost them in the struggle. –Gabe Logan
Evidence #78
Security code 898. On a hunch, I entered a familiar code into the dam’s security network. I’ve seen 898 tattooed on the neck of every al-Jamil true believer. Code breakers have been unable to decipher the significance of that number. But, code breakers are logical creatures. That’s the strength of Bitar’s symbol, he’s not logical. He’s crazy. Agency code breakers, like Teresa, can crack 128 bit encryption like it was children’s Sudoku. But they’re incapable of getting inside Bitar’s head, even to understand three simple digits.
Evidence #79
Dog-tag. Lian didn’t trust me a month ago when Shen first contacted her. And she still doesn’t trust me, even after I risked my life to rescue her from Bitar’s desert bunker. It was a mistake to bring Lian on this mission. After her diversionary attack, she abandoned her post to go after Shen, and has been incommunicado since. These dog-tags are hers. I returned them to her after I rescued her. Did she lose them in a fight, or was she trying to shed them for good? The Lian Xing that I used to know would never have dropped her Agency tags. –Gabe Logan
Evidence #80
Letter from Rhamani. ‘Bitar, you take things too far. Your zealousness has blinded you to the harm you cause to your own people – your own brothers! I plead you to rethink this plan. I want the Westerners gone from our lands, as much as you. But the Suez Canal is important to us all. Destroying it would do irreparable harm, not just to myself but to the entire region.
Come to my home in El-Gouna straightaway, and forestall any action on the shipping lanes until we have spoken. I will make my case to you; that with the West I have a partnership, but with al-Jamil I have an alliance. –Fawzi Rhamani’
I was outside Rhamani’s mansion the day of that meeting. And he didn’t make a very strong case for their alliance because Bitar gutted Fawzi like a goat. –Gabe Logan
Ep6-4
Evidence #81
Blueprints. Accessing dam security files on the computer terminal, I found plenty of evidence trying dam officials to Bitar. I uploaded blueprints and financial records describing rapid facility retrofitting and construction of four quantum harness ports. All of this took place in just one week’s time, with government officials supplying resources and manpower. Tonight I’ll take care of Bitar once and for all. But the government officials assisting al-Jamil aren’t off the hook. –Gabe Logan
Evidence #82
Target list. Of all the X-Z-2 devices Bitar forced Shen to construct, most were permanently entombed inside al-Jamil’s desert bunker. The surviving four had been rigged to charge at Nahr al Khabur. Bitar fled with one device when I reached the charge room. Some might call it cowardice. Bitar is many things, but coward isn’t one of them. He was simply cutting his losses, trying to ensure at least one device could be delivered onto its target. The map he left behind had four US cities circled in red. –Gabe Logan
Evidence #83
Letter. Shen dropped this letter as we left the charge room. ‘Lian, if you are reading this then I am already dead. Please carry no guilt, as I have given Bitar reason enough to kill me. I risked a much worse fate leaving home to prevent my work being used for war. I misjudged the world when building the X-Z-2; but now Bitar has misjudged me if he thinks I can be scared into making his bomb. Please know that I only regret this ending, and the pain I have caused you. Your husband, Shen Rei.’ –Gabe Logan

Lune, thanks for this. I enjoyed this LP, and the first 3 games. I got to say, though, I miss Gabe's original voice actor, he was fun.
And I want to also say, yes this:
All of Logan's enemies are fuel for the taser and nothing more. In fact I did briefly consider putting some heads there, but because it was only Logan that was confirmed to have died rather than see his friends be labeled deceased, it was important to me that he ascend alone to demonhood and wage the most unholiest of wars. The war still rages within
is totally as hell. Perhaps Logan has truly become one with the taser now that his mortal, weak body has perished?

That whole scene fit in ways I couldn't have imagined, from music to headcanon. It's part of the story that the main character in Nocturne is literally fused with a parasite that Lucifer put on him.
The taser is that parasite, if we want to go that way. It is to be noted that a cosmetic title in Nocturne changes depending on alignment and the one in that video was Lord, but in the Japanese version it would be Demonic Emperor
Again fitting for the Taser if you ask me. Roboky said it best: "King Solomon didn't subdue all the demons he got to the last one saw it was the taser and just walked away."
