I don't remember if its mentioned or used in the first game or any of the PS1 trilogy but I do know that in one of the PS2 games the taser is shown to be non-lethal as long as you let go before the fire starts. In the later games one of the "Agency" higher-ups is some kind of "don't kill any one, not even the bad guys" dude and there's a level where one of the parameters is to not kill anyone at all. Using the taser is fine as long as you don't ignite anyone. In any case the PS1 Syphon Filters are great. Everyone should watch this and then go play them.

The K3G4 is amazing not only because it ignores flak jackets but it also leaves them undamaged for you to pick up. It's basically the best gun in the game that doesn't use electricity. Edit: Another neat thing about enemies with flak jackets is that if you shoot them in the chest a bunch then kill them with a headshot the flak jacket they drop will only have whatever armor is left, not the usual 1/3 refill. Omega Strain only really worked solo if you never died, never broke stealth when you needed stealth, and didn't blunder into activating time sensitive objectives you had no idea were there in the first place. You basically have to be perfect to anything but the most mild of objectives. I think its in the very first map where there's an objective you can just run into where you have to kill a 4 man death squad or something that is running to its target. They all have body armor so they're incredibly hard to kill (headshots being hard on moving targets) and if they kill you you respawn in some random area but time hasn't stopped so you're hosed because there is no way to get to them now that they're off running again. A lot of the stuff you have to do basically assumes you have 3 other people to help you and it makes no accommodations for not. The only missions that are balanced around a single person are "special" missions revolving around the past exploits of senior team members that give you new moves. Those missions are actually pretty fun in the traditional Syphon Filter sense. The problem is that 1) unlocking those specials missions often requires doing really well in the missions NOT designed for a single person and 2) the moves those missions give you access to are almost 100% necessary to do well in the main missions in the first place, solo or co-op. But Sony needed a game to try and promote its terrible PS2 online service I guess.

Lunethex posted:Hold the phone, what is this about "moves" unlocking from these missions? I might be mistaken, I only ever completed two of the bonus missions before giving up on the game entirely, but for example the first bonus mission has you playing as some old war weary sniper guy who has the special ability to kill guards barehanded by snapping their neck if you sneak up behind them. If you complete the mission - or maybe complete it under a certain time? - you unlock that ability for your own characters. The second bonus mission has some kind of stealth ability. I really like this level - even the stealth part! - but two really long, really hard escort quests in a row? God drat it game. At least its where I learned to love the K3. And it looks like you already knew this since you seem to do it a couple times but rolling during a long fall can save you from dying, unless its from a really tall height. The trick is getting the timing right, because if you're too early then you're just rolling to your death instead of just running to it.

Lunethex posted:I've noticed you can initiate a roll just as you fall, I've done it a few times, but I didn't know it had protective qualities It also allows you to skip the "stumble" animation if you fall from a height that doesn't kill you but is still pretty high. I don't want to spoil anything too specific but now that I think of it learning how to do it might actually be necessary in a future section because it was the point where I finally learned about it.

"I'm getting good at it." - One of those lines that shows that 989 Studios knew exactly what they were doing. Syphon Filter 2 is easily the peak of the PS1 games. 1 was where they were learning, and while 3 is good it's a bit more... scattered I guess might be a good word.

I imagine whoever inserted that joke was one of those people that was waaaaaay too into Lara Croft back when Tomb Raider was new (see the top left cover feature).

You can also save only one of those militia brothers and get different dialogue.

Lunethex posted:If anyone knows a movie with a fight scene that starts just after a dude gets off an elevator let me know. Preferably a man going up against a woman. I have some other things I can use but if there's something pretty sweet out there I'll take a look This one doesn't start in an elevator but it does involve an elevator. I'm not sure if its a great scene since its Arrow on CW but for that show's typical fight choreography it was pretty good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syZrZ1Huu_s&t=92s

That's basically what frustrated me about Omega Strain when I played it back when it was actually new on the PS2. To get to the fun stuff you had to play it in co-op to get the ridiculous and who the hell actually played PS2 games over the internet. When the game reduced or dropped that kind of thing it got really fun.

Lunethex posted:(I know you can't play ANY of the side missions, which are all cool, without getting par times). If I was a cynical man I'd think that the side missions (which indeed are all really fun, good, single player, and unique) were what the game was originally going to be (a group of mostly enjoyable if occasionally stereotypical agents each using their own unique skills to accomplish various missions) until some Sony executive came in and said "We need a game to promote our lovely online system and you're it." If I was cynical. Kibayasu fucked around with this message at 19:45 on Feb 24, 2016 |

apostateCourier posted:No, you can't, that's right. You need at least three people- one to give lifts, and two to hit buttons simultaneously. It's complete and total bullshit. I know far too much about it because when it actually wants to be the PS2 Syphon Filter game we all wanted its really good. This was one of those situations where I kept playing it to reach that next point where I was actually having fun instead of just stopping because there was a lot of unfun things in between.

Does the Fail QTE level hook back up with the Succeed level at some point or did I miss when that happened?

This LP really makes me wish that Omega Strain didn't try the whole online co-op thing on the PS2 so Syphon Filter could have remained on there instead of being shifted to the PSP, or at least had a better shot. They're still good but in my head they could have been much more.

Give Syphon Filter to Naughty Dog and tell them to make Uncharted but with more swearing and gravelly voices. I dropped the series after Omega Strain disappointed me, I didn't have a PSP, and never knew they got PS2 ports so I'm glad I got to see the last two, thanks. Didn't see Gabe dying coming at all. Of course he would still be alive in a sequel but he's dead here.
