I once wondered if any modern artist had realised the C18 inventor Jaques Vaucanson's fever dream of a robotic digestive system, which resulted in his famous 'Digesting Duck' automaton (though a great inventor, and a pioneer of programmable robotic looms, Vaucanson cheated a bit; the duck ate real grain, but shat a pre-loaded mix of greenish breadcrumb slurry) . Why did I even wonder this? Wim Delvoye's 'Cloaca' - a computer-controlled, poo-generating robot - has toured in several editions, to art galleries worldwide. With respect to the last DARPA Challenge, I'm rather fond of the JPL's Robosimian. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HFXO_qx5ZY Rather than trying to emulate the human body, they took a look at what made sense for the motors they had available and ended up with a tentacle armed transforming robot ape.
