I noticed there wasn't any topics about people pulling off ridiculously hard feats. So I thought to make a thread. Try to stay away from tool assisted videos. I'll get the ball rolling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrOIgxQ--Tc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CugqEZKbMR0

These are the best players at the highest level. Thousands of dollars and immense cardboard wizard prestige are on the line. Second, this card. It's the one the guy on the right drew: Miracle is a keyword that basically says "Hey I just happened to draw this card! Look how lucky I am!" The World Championship was decided by a topdeck.

GAINING WEIGHT... posted:That'd be more luck than skill, then, right? Well, sort of. The luck comes in from what order you draw cards in of course but the skill comes in how you play the cards you end up drawing and what cards you put in the deck in the first place. That's part of what makes the game so interesting; you want to minimize the effect of getting lovely draws by putting together a good deck but at the same time planning around the fact that you are guaranteed to occasionally get dicked over by randomness. "Just pick like 60 cards or something who cares whatever" sounds pretty simple but people, especially competitive players, will spend more time making decks than actually playing the game.

RBA Starblade posted:What is happening here? It's the World Magic Cup tournament. Three players from each country (that can field them) play some interesting formats to get bragging rights and some prize money (no where near enough, but that's a whole other kettle of fish). This was a win-and-in (I think, for reference win and in means you and you get into the top 8) with team USA VS team Chinese Taipei. The Americans are all watching on the left. The situation was the Chinese Taipei team had one turn before they lost; the player drew Bonfire of the Damned (image above from Orange Fluffy Sheep). As Sheepy said the Miracle keyword says "If you draw this card as the first card you drew this turn, you can cast it for a discounted price." It was EXACTLY the card needed to win the match and even the discounted price was relevant. The reactions are priceless. Top decks happen in Magic; but this was famous for being THE top deck with THE top deck mechanic in the BIGGEST tourney; featuring BIG name players. Aaron Forsythe, the Director of MTG's R&D department, is the big guy looking over the mustached man's shoulder (he is in fact LSV Slappaav). What the gif doesn't capture is him walking away in disgust.

Simply Simon posted:Magic's designers love to emphasize that the game is super skill based, such a prolific win off only luck must piss them off somewhat fierce. Perhaps, if you don't want last-minute reversals through sheer luck, you shouldn't design a mechanic which is luck-based and can cause last-minute reversals. For gently caress's sake they literally named it "Miracle," what the hell else did they expect?

With it's Miracle keyword it can deal damage to everything on your opponents side of the board and the oppoent themselves for very little mana comparative to how good the effect is. It's like the card Blaze but better because of it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syF_Wp_-GKs What is happening here is they are grabbing the Rocket Launcher from later in the map then returning to the start and rocket jumping up above the starting area and behind the trigger that starts the timer. Once up there they shoot a rocket forward then jump off triggering the timer to start and use a double rocket jump to boost them and they start strafe jumping toward the rocket they fired earlier then the use the explosion from that rocket timing out and one they fire at the ground to do another double rocket jump to clear the map with an insane time of 07.774seconds.
