The plane the skeleton is flying is a Corvair B-58 Hustler, the fast strike Mach 2 thermonuclear delivery aircraft that had an airframe that could outperform the human occupants inside of it and wasn't exactly designed to survive after it dropped off the equivalent of millions of tons of TNT. It had a bizarre ejection pod ejection system meant to allow the crew to escape the worst conditions... and I guess eject into an irradiated wasteland they just created, I don't know, seems pretty messed up.
