Windows Media Creation Tool failed with the same error on both my windows 10 PC trying to create a bootable USB AND on my windows 7 pro PC I'm trying to upgrade...

It's been awhile since I've installed Windows 10, am I missing something obvious?

Edit : is there a better way to install Windows 10 now? I haven't tried since upgrades were free...

What error are you getting? Is your USB stick large enough for the install files?

It's a 16gb USB drive, but the error occurs whether I'm using the tool to upgrade in Windows 7, without using a USB drive or if I'm using my other PC to try to create a bootable USB. I will have to try it again today, I didn't take a picture of the error code.

It's especially odd to me, because it gets to 100% on both PCs and then kicks back an error message. I'd create a boot USB myself using a different program but I can't seem to find the iso

Doesn't the tool also let you choose to download the ISO? I just used the tool myself a few days ago, and I seem to recall it asked if I wanted the tool to create the bootable USB stick, or just download an ISO.

And if that is really the case, if it successfully lets you download an ISO, then you can pretty much narrow down the problem to the USB stick.

EDIT: What brand/model is the USB stick?

It didn't let me download the ISO on either machine, which is the weirdest part. I wasn't using a USB stick at all on the windows 7 machine at all . It actually gave me the same error message on both machines, regardless of whether I chose the "upgrade this machine" option or "create media to update a different machine"

I'll have to check when I get home re: error code, I believe the USB is a SanDisk Cruzer.

Yes. I also tried running as administrator and etc with same errors.

At least on IE (w7 machine) , edge (w10 machine) and Firefox (on both machines) , i don't even get the option to download the ISO, the page redirects to the tool download page only, with no option to just direct download the iso. If I access it on my phone chrome browser, I can download the iso. I will probably give it a try on one of my Linux laptops this afternoon.. It's just baffling to me honestly

Well I finally got windows 10 installed so I figured I would give an update to a way to get the ISO if the tool doesn't work: in Google Chrome, I used an add on to allow webpages to run in "mobile" view. Using a mobile view tab, I was able to access the direct download link for the Windows 10 iso. I used Rufus and the iso to make a boot USB- I didn't actually get the boot USB to work because I forgot to change the boot order in bios, but I was able to run the setup.exe file on the USB drive, on my windows 7 PC, and now it's running windows 10 fully patched and updated and etc.

I really appreciate everyone's help and advice and I figured I would give an update as to what worked for me, in case others can't get the tool to work :)

Moral of the story is to not bother with a Ms account unless you know you want it.

On the flip side, I have probably 7 computers all running on the same Microsoft account and the only key I have is a key that came with my Inspiron and my $5 ebay key lol

So, going back to this. Why would windows 10 decide to make my entire computer, every single file and drive, read only? I'm discovering this is what happened and while I can give myself full access to all drives again, I wonder WHY my entire C drive decided to make itself read only in the first place

I have a frequently used program that I would like to place a shortcut for dead-center on my monitor and make like four times as big to call attention to it. Windows file sharing on my network literally only works if the first is on lol. I wish I knew why

Edit: I should add that this only occurred when the PC was updated to 2004. Prior to the upgrade, I didn't have to to any fiddling with any settings. Every PC is set to private network and file sharing is "on" on every PC

Additional edit: looking online, I guess a ton of people are having this issue with 2004 so I guess I'm not alone :argh:

Are you using guest file shares? That has not worked reliably in my experience since 9x. Make sure both ends have the same user set up with the same password.

Having SMB1 enabled opens up a number of security holes you can drive a truck through, so you should really want to fix this properly.

Turn SMBv1 off on both the client and the server you're testing from, then if it really still doesn't work open up Event Viewer and take a look at the following paths:

Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > SMBClient
Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > SMBServer

Those logs should give you a good hint as to the actual problem.

I'm finding a lot of people saying the exact opposite, that 2004 broke SMBv1 for them and it's of course critical because of some Windows 2000 server they should have retired a decade ago is now inaccessible. Haven't actually seen anyone complaining of needing to enable it for shares between modern systems to operate.

No it doesn't even have anything to do with sharing or not as far as I can see. If I turn SMBv1 off on ANY computer I use, no network PCs show up at all and all mapped network drives disappear. If I turn on SMBv1, then every single PC shows up. I can go through my gaming PC, laptop, second laptop and the PC I use for Plex and it's repeatable across every single computer. It's simply "SMBv1 on, all networked computers are visible, smbv1 off, all network drives disappear"- this includes the external hard drive I have connected to my router and everything. It's extremely odd lol

Adding to my mystery of the SMB addled windows network, I have discovered that turning SMB v1 off does not actually prevent me from connecting to the drives if I use the direct network path, however the network drives disappear, and if I map them, they no longer work. I think it does relate to what the poster said about guest accounts because with SMB off it only appears to allow 1 person access at a time. A very strange problem, but at least I'm able to move stuff to my PC without needing smb v1 🤷🏻‍♂️

So you can access the shares by IP address but not by name?

What redeyes posted will work if you really want or need the ability to just browse the Network section of Explorer, here's the relevant MS docs where that quoted part came from:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/wi...etwork-browsing

That said, they do have this note immediately after the part that was quoted:

In other words it's recommended that you use DNS names or IP addresses rather than relying on Windows' network discovery to map names to computers. On most consumer network-in-a-box devices there's a checkbox option in the DNS or DHCP settings to automatically map hostnames in to the local DNS zone. That way even devices that can't use Windows network discovery can still find everything by name.

Between this and red-eyes post, this pretty much solved all my issues! ("Pretty much solved all my issues" sums up my windows 10 experience lol)
