It's the not-too-distant future, and the world is connected.

We depend on the massive on-line service InfiniNet for the running of our lives. Everyone has an avatar, which has the same permissions as they would in real-life, and through it they can work from home, order food and products, manage cities, invest in stock and real estate, or access services for travelling acorss the world. InfiniNet is everything, and everything is linked to InfiniNet. Medical systems, mass media, government websites, banking... everything is here.

Of course, some of the most secure facilities are isolated. Human paranoia and security needs are paramount, after all. But most things are here, if you know where to look.

That's not all there is to InfiniNet, though! It's a social hub, where people can chat and meet new friends from all over the world. It's a gaming centre, where you can wager anything on the outcome of a few rounds of Texas Hold-Em or Hanafuda. And the multiple Zones are full games in their own right, scratching the itch of casual platform games, intense strategy and competitive games, and MMO progression, depending on where you want to go. Your avatar changes dynamically in the zones, so you always fit in with the theme!

Of course, a service this massive needs someone to look after it, and that's where you come in.

---

Welcome to InfiniNet, a Strike game based on Summer Wars and its ilk. You are part of the administration team of InfiNet, a massive online service that has replaced the internet. Your job is to keep it, and its one billion registered users, safe from intrusion, hackers, malware and other security risks, and to keep it running smoothly. I'm looking for 4 to 5 people to play. You'll mostly be playing as your Avatars, whilst the characters playing them will just be referred to as characters,

Strike is an RPG created by Jim MCGarva. It's a rules-light RPG with various plug-and-play elements. You can buy the full game (recommended for access to character creation rules), or get enough to learn to play, here.

Since the game has several different elements that are optional, characters, should have the following:
  • A basic character sheet, with six to eight Skills (including resource skills), one or two Tricks, and one or two Complications. This represents your character both outside and inside the virtual world - it has the same permissions as you do! Just go through the baaic character creation for this.
  • A tactical character sheet, with your combat class and role. You won't need to use this all the time - the tactical combat element represents formal combat in the game worlds as handled by InfiiNet's engine. If you don't have the full Rules, you can always PM me for help or request it in this thread.
  • A short list of Gear - items your avatar has on them.
  • Relationships are being used! This will be handled when picks are made, so don't worry about this.
  • Kits are not being used.
Since the setting is style-agnostic, feel free to find appropriate pictures for the character's in-game Avatars.

Sign ups will close on Friday 28th August.

Mister Genesis (real name: Lawford Grey Helms III)

--------------Avatar---------------------------------IRL

Lawford is not a prodigy. He is not particularly intelligent, charismatic, well-spoken, or inventive. How then, was Lawford, at 23 years old, directly from his Masters program, hired to the administration team of the largest service in the world? That story starts before his birth, when Lawford Grey Helms II, his father, invested in a social media startup that promised to eclipse everything before it. It was only one of his many investments, and he could never have expected that one investment could propel him to become one of the richest men in the world, and shareholder of a full 7% of InfiniNet. It could come as no surprise then that his son would have been raised with every advantage; prestigious boarding schools, private tutors, exclusive club memberships, deep connections with the rich and powerful, and the best university and internship money could buy. Lawford exited school a network programmer of reasonably high, more thanks to a strong education than personal ability, and able to perform the duties of a network admin in unexciting but competent ways. Despite this, Lawford takes himself very seriously, with a highly complex custom avatar, expensive designer clothes, and a cult-like following of the latest in health and exercise trends, no matter how strange or unreasonable. He's only worked for InfiniNet a matter of weeks, but already he has been pushed harder than ever before in his privileged life, but his ego will allow for no less; a failure might utterly crush his untempered spirit.

The guise of Mister Genesis is complex, even for the highly adaptable avatars. The basic form is always the same; a classic 'Invisible Man', with a somewhat old-fashioned business suit and hat in the form of a tall, well-built man, but with no visible body; the head and hands are entirely invisible. Avatars much like this are fairly popular, and readily available from the InfiniNet digital store, and are particularly common among law enforcement agents, and people who like to be mistaken for one. Where Mister Genesis differs is in enviromental customization; while other Invisible Men change clothing style to fit the zone paradigm, Mister Genesis instead changes clothing material, appropriating textures and animations from the nearby digital world and forming his unchanging, iconic suit from them; a coat made from scented smoke and slacks of dark, polished wood in a smoking lounge, a tie of jagged mirror shards and a flaming trilby in a hellish disco, or treebark, grass, and cloud in a digital park. Lawford has also edited his many autonomous scripts to a similar style, appearing to come swirling into existence from nearby cyber objects, as though Mister Genesis is taking control of the very zone to accomplish his goals.

Lawford's major duties with the company are largely centered around finding and removing forbidden or illegal material, and repairing defacement by hackers. While he's capable of some low level hacking by virtue of his profession, he's never really been taught any of the dirty tricks that a real hacker relies on.

Skills: Data Search/Processing, Firewalls/Encryption, AR Construction/Editting, Health and Exercise, Super-Rich (the first two are flavored as being conducted by minor 'summoned' autonomous programs, rather than with Lawford's own skill; this may affect their use when appropriate)

Tricks:
---"Do you know who his father is?!" - While Lawford himself only very rarely uses his father as a bludgeon to get his way, he is blissfully unaware of the influence his name has on other InfiniNet employees and associates. It can often open doors that Lawford never really realized were closed.
---Paradigm Shift - Lawford is specialized in AR environments, and several scripts that can be used to make large, if imprecise, changes to the local zone. Intended to be used to rapidly deal with large scale defacement or forbidden content, use of these scripts almost certainly sets off every alarm in the zone.

Complications:
---"Nobody calls me chicken." - Lawford takes himself extremely seriously, and really can't take a joke or roll with derision at his expense. While he isn't the type to take revenge, he's often engages in drawn out arguments, competitions, and even fights over less-than-polite words about him.
---"Pop goes the ego" - Lawford has very little experience dealing with failure, and often takes it far worse than he should. He desperately tries to correct his mistakes, even to the detriment of his other tasks, or tries to overcompensate if he's unable to do so. If things go bad enough, he might even have a complete breakdown!

Gear:
---Newspaper: A autonomous program that automatically queries, decrypts, searches, and displays all access and change logs in the zone, even if Mister Genesis does not normally have permission to access them. The program only updates as fast as the decryption and search algorithms do, and of course data can be concealed by a savvy enough hacker.
---Umbrella: A magic wand in a standard copy, this highly restricted bit of programming is an InfiniNet executive override for zone graphics and construction. It allows the admin to (within the scope of the zone paradigm) edit textures, animations, and layout without normal permissions. Most often used to remove obscene material and other forms of defacement at the behest of zone owners and users, this is not a subtle tool; it clearly logs and identifies itself, and will often set off security alarms when used without zone admin knowledge. Misuse reflects badly on InfiniNet, and the executives have mandated harsh punishment for such things.

Tactical:
---Role: Controller ["Edit Topography" (Control Boost), "Hostile Zone" (Sap Strength), "Cage" (Freeze!)]
---Class: Summoner ["Flux" (Trooper); "Vortex" (Air Elemental) OR "Blob" (Water Elemental)]
---Feat: Huge (Elementals)

EDIT: OK! I changed this character around a bit to were I think I'm liking them.

Character Name: Quinn O’Quinn (born Darby Quincy-Asher)
Avatar Name: "SilverHat" - formerly "Quoq" (pronounced “kwoak”)

Darby had a rough childhood. They never knew their father and their mother was never really around so Darby spent his youth with his grandparents. Their grandparents lived in a small house in a not-so-urban borough of the city.
Their grandfather was a retired computer scientist of so form. The story went that he had his life’s work stolen from him and never really recovered. Darby never found out much beyond that. Their grandfather taught them about computers every day after school. Not just the typical interface things that most people know but every bit and byte. Every capacitor and circuit. And some less-than-legal uses. At a young age Darby became more computer literate than most that studied the field. They loved it too.
Darby’s grandmother, Kendra O’Quinn, was a former puppeteer and had modest collection of marionettes. Due to arthritis, she could no longer make the dolls dance as she once did, but Darby was still fascinated by the short acts their grandmother would perform for them.

Eventually due to age and failing health Darby’s grandparents passed leaving Darby alone in the world. They didn’t really fit in with the orphanage people and found school to be no help. They took to the streets until finding a sort of refuge with some local mob. Their computer skills often proved useful in petty crime as it turned out. Darby did what they needed to survive, but got good at it. Over the years Darby made quite a name has a cracker and black hat hacker learning everything else their grandpa didn’t teach them from peers and experience. At some point they decided to take the handle “Quoq” on the Infininet.

But eventually they got in over their heads. Someone they thought was a peer turned out to be a government agent working with Infininet to track down their group. Darby was arrested, but the higher ups at InfiniNet recognized their ability and offered an alternative. Darby, always being a survivalist, decided to take the offer but realized it would be a good idea to change their name to cover up their tracks. They choose the name Quinn O’Quinn in honor of their grandparents and “SilverHat” as their new avatar name.

Quinn is 31 and agender. They have tan skin, pale grey eyes, and wear a large wide lavender and white patterned scarf around their neck almost all year round along with outfits that would be described as “business casual.”
Quinn can be brash but is generally lighthearted. They have dry wit that sometimes comes off as cruel or aloof.

Quoq - Appears as two low poly pyramids facing away from a center sphere that’s textured with an eye-like pattern. Floating segmented blocks that form hands float detached. Sort of Bob from the Iria anime. But about the size of an average person's upper body but with floating fingers instead of arms.

Skills:
Quick Wit - There’s a joke for any occasion… isn’t there?
Urban Survivalist - Quinn seen the lowest a person can fall and has come out stronger.
Former Cyber Criminal - Quinn knowledge of the darkest reaches of the net.
Street Hacker - Quinn was never traditionally taught nor did they attend a school to learn their skills. They learned what they know from countless hours of experimentation and a keen instinct.

Tricks:
Machine Puppeteer - Quinn understands the ghosts in the machines and they do their bidding.
Debug Mode - While in Infininet Quinn can “convince” nearby environmental objects what they are sensing.
( I was thinking about something that would be similar to their Blaster terrain powers. Like they can sense things that wouldn’t otherwise be able to see or hear/etc in digital environment while as their Avatar. Sort of like Toph’s geo-sensing for Avatar. But it would work narratively like the environment is literally telling them stuff.)

Complications:
Bad time for a joke - Quinn is a master of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.
Short Leash - Quinn is carefully monitored and not fully trusted by the higher ups at InfiniNet.

Resources:
Poor - They don’t really have much of their own wealth.

Gear:
Marionette - a simple bot that assists with accessing and controlling AI and other avatars. Appears as a marionette’s control bars and string.
Scramble array - A custom built script that allows easier encrypting and decrypting.

Role: Blaster
At Will - System Glitch (Terrain Boost)
Encounter - Reassign Target (Consistent Attack)

Class: Nercomancer
I’ll be reskinning this as a sort of avatar marionette controlling theme.
Gift - Gift of Undeath - AI/avatar Control
At Will - Decompiler (Deadly Poison), Input override (Phantasms)
Encounter - Command AI(Command Undead), Force Feedback (Corpse Explosion)

Feat: Flyer

Mary Levant, a.k.a. 6six

Skills:
- Conflict Mediation: Smoothing over the infinite personality differences that make up the bulk of online communication.
- Vidja Games: Shooting bad guys and making numbers go up and/or down.
- Bullshitting: Making poo poo up, or making bad poo poo sound less bad. A key skill for dealing with parents, professors, and bosses.
- Music: Despite claims that she never goes offline for any reason, Mary actually majors in Violin at the University.
- Blending In: In the midst of a crowd, a city kid is as good as invisible.

Resources:
- [KotW] Knights of the West: Mary's old guild, a byzantine organization active in tons of games. She had to cut official ties with them when she took the job, but they've still got her back.
- Pi Delta Rho: Mary's sorority, mostly a bunch of musicians. How she opened up enough to rush is a blur, but it likely involved alcohol.
- Poor: The job pays enough to get her through college, but not much more. Occasionally she can hit up Mom and Dad for cash.

Tricks:
- hey it's me again: Mary's contact list is mind-bogglingly long and diverse. If she needs to find someone, there's a good chance she already sort-of knows them. Or at least sends them an automatic birthday card each year.
- Empty?

Complications:
- Stress: Too much to do, too few hours in the day. Or at least it feels like it.
- Old enemies: Not everyone thinks Mary's such an angel. She stabbed a few backs along the way.

Class: Archer
- Sword Tech (Blitzer)
- Predictive Targeting (Aim)
- Seek (Flare)
- Zoning (Pin Down)
- Telegraphed Super (Area Denial)
- Chromatic Strike (Trick Arrow)

Role: Defender
- Ukemi (Defense Boost)
- Muscle Memory (Stickiness Boost)
- Invincibility Frames (You call that a punch?)

Feat: Melee Shooter

Kevin Manick

"The old school guys have it the toughest in this new world. Always some new punk who thinks they can do their job better than we can do ours. Always someone with new flashy equipment who thinks they can outwit those that have been around the block. They don't understand what I've gone through to get where I am, and what I'm willing to do to keep myself relevant."

Most of the young kids these days are straight out of school with a degree in computer science, and have no idea what a real security professional does. They don't understand the mindset you have to be in to think like a hacker. Now a days its all about looking at the data, and ignoring the social aspect of the hack. Kevin is really, really good at getting inside adversaries heads, and finding out the who and the why of the hack. Most of these kids today only want to know the how of the hack. Kevin, however, looks at the bigger picture. Kevin is always in the shadows, watching the bad guys, talking to them. Feeding off their personalities and anticipating what they're thinking about. When people meet his avatar, they think he's a hacker, because thats the way he wants it. What better way to get the much needed intel of the attackers than to join them? A little darkness won't hurt everyone.

Originally an Air Force Cyber Intel specialist, Kevin has a deep background in finding the hacker communities. Although he mostly knows foreign government's hacker teams, he dove headfirst into the Cyber Criminal world at his first job after leaving the Air Force. The job was with a small security company that consulted for Fortune 100s, and responded to breaches and incidents. Kevin found he enjoyed the hunt, the boots on the ground, the constant movement towards finding the bad guys and stopping their attacks. He didn't get paid much, and much of the money he earned now belongs to his ex-wife, but Kevin has never been short of what he needs in his day to day life.

Kevin's avatar is very much like himself.Quiet and reserved when he needs to be, and loud and shouty when the action starts. He usually depicts his avatar as a shadowy figure wearing a hoodie to hide his face, blending in with the background and very hard to see. His avatar is designed to be able to infiltrate even the toughest of hacker groups.

    Skills:
  • Social Engineering: Talking gets you where you need to go better than brute force. You just have to know how to talk
  • Ex-Military : Kevin's time in the military gave him a hard outlook on life, and the ability to lead a small time through tough times and stress.
  • Intel Gathering: Kevin is able to get the deepest secrets out of bad guys, and detect the indicators that most use.
  • Research: Kevin's ability to process information and weed out the False Positives is an integral part of his job.
  • Infiltration Getting close to the bad guys leads to better intel from them.

    Resources:
  • Rich Kevin's Ex-Wife took a lot in the divorce, but Kevin has never been poor. He has enough resources to live very comfortably.

    Tricks:
  • Gaining Entry: Kevin can pry the password to the secure location, or bypass the locks completely, if need be.
  • Sound like a bad guy The ability to talk and be recognized for a person that has been in the biz.

    Complications:
  • drat, kids, get off my lawn: Kevin looks down on the young.
  • Tinfoil Hat: Kevin is a little paranoid. It comes from having seen the worst of people over a long career. He'll shoot first and ask questions later.

    Gear:
  • Skeleton Key: A powerful AI cracker that can help Kevin break passwords or encryption
  • Bloodhound: An AI that can track known targets through the virtual world.

Class: Duelist
    Features:
  • Identify Target (Duelist)
Whenever you start your turn, the target of your Duel takes one Focus. This represents that they need to focus their attention on you. For each point of Focus the enemy gets, pick one effect from the list below. They act cumulatively.
    • Harried
    • Cannot benefit from positive effects from its allies' powers.
    • Cannot take advantage of Opportunities
    • Cannot benefit from positive effects from its own powers.
    • Cannot use Interrupts or Reactions.

  • Sandbox (Throw off their aim)
When the target of your Duel hits your ally with an attack, you may spend any number of points of its Focus to reduce the damage by one per point spent.

    At-Will:
  • Engineered Attack (Change Target)
Make a Basic Attack against a creature. Then change the target of Duel to that creature.
  • Counter-Virus (Exploit Weakness)
Target is Vulnerable 1 to all damage with you as the source until the end of the encounter. Non-cumulative.
  • Honeypot (False Opportunity)
Effect: On the target’s next turn, it believes it has Advantage to attack you. If it does attack you, it takes 2 damage. It does not, in fact, have Advantage unless from some other source. Clarification: The 2 damage in the effect line is dealt before the enemy’s attack is resolved.

    Encounter:
  • Specific Indicators (Duel)
Target one creature within 10 squares. Until the end of the encounter, when you attack the target, any 2’s on your dice are treated as though they were 4’s. Special: This power recharges when its target is Taken Out. (Free Action)
  • Secret Government Code Attack (Ain’t No One Else Around)
Effect: 3 damage if neither you nor the target have any other creatures adjacent.
  • Anonymity Shield (Defensive Tactics) - One ally within 10 squares has Resist 2 damage until the end of your next turn.
  • Move through the Net (Tactics)
One ally of your choice may spend a Move Action immediately.
  • Fuzzy Identity (Heal)
Target may regain Hit Points equal to half its maximum (round down). The target may pick one of the following options:
    • If the target is Prone, they may stand up.
    • If this brings the target to full health, they may have Advantage on their next attack.
    • Enemies have Disadvantage to attack the target until the end of the target’s next turn.
    • The target may make a Saving Throw against one Status that al- lows one or to escape a Grab.

  • Reconnect (Try Again!)
Trigger: An ally makes an attack and dislikes the result. Spend an Action Point. The ally may reroll the attack.

Role: Leader
    Abilities:
  • Secure Secret Network (Teamwork Boost)
When you roll a 5 or 6 on an attack, you gain an additional use of the Tactics encounter power.

As a heads up, Mustache Ride: Warlord/Leader can be a bit boring to play, since the role and the class do very similar things. Warlord/Blaster or Warlord/Controller are both really good though, especially Blasters, who can throw around AoE Advantage fields and such.

Avatars. The accounts are linked to your real world privileges - basically, it supplants the internet, and you use InfiniNet to work from home. It's "the Internet of Things" writ large. Summer Wars deals with the problems of this by having a military AI gently caress everything up and grind Japan to a halt, which may or may not happen in our own game!

Countblanc posted:

Good

quote:

DISA

The Defense Information Systems Agency is the cyber combat support unit of the Department of Defense. Made up of multiple branches of the military, Agents of DISA protect the Global Information Grid, the secure, government sanctioned offshoot of InfiniNet against attacks from all opposition, foreign governments, cyber-criminals, and all others.

Kevin left DISA in good standing after being offered his current role at InfiniNet, and he still has a strong connection with the members of this unit. He keeps in communication with them and assists them with information sharing and intelligence gathering through his own efforts at InfiniNet.

Ambivalent

quote:

DarkNet

The existence of the DarkNet, the secret alternative to InfiniNet that was left over from the http days, and the fact that many Cyber Intelligence specialists proliferate it, is no longer a secret. Kevin has spent years trudging through this wasteland of deep underground content on the web far from seeing eyes.

Kevin frequents a few sites that keep him informed of movements of hacker movement and causes, and although his job and purpose for being here is widely known, his presence is tolerated simply due to the fact that he does not rat out hackers who do no harm to things he protects. The DarkNet users know that the only way Kevin would come down on them is if he caught them on a specific hack.

Rivals

quote:

61398部队

The Cyber arm of the Chinese Army, the leaders of this unit, specifically Wang Dong and his team of hacking specialists, have tried to penetrate InfiniNet and the GIG more times than Kevin cares to admit. Despite the routine military cyber attacks against this unit by various countries, the Chinese PLA Unit 61398 continues its ruthless war against all secure, and unsecured networks. Kevin is constantly fighting the Chinese on all fronts, and gathering the intelligence regarding their attacks is always at the forefront of his mind.

Unit 61398 has concentrated their efforts against hacking InfiniNet after the business in the Fortune 500 moved all presence exclusively to InfiniNet. The Chinese continue to pound against the walls the InfiniNet security team has built.

Oh I should do some relationships, shouldn't I?

Quinn

Positive
Person - Barry "Eggs" Abelen - The owner and operator of the "Eggs and Bacon," a small digital cafe that is a hacker meet up and a front for gray market software. Eggs and Quinn became close friends after years of working together but grew apart after Quinn got involved in more serious stuff. However they knew that could trust Eggs and he is the one and only person from their former life that they still keep in contact with.

Ambivalent:
Person - Janina McNeil - She is main contact with the higher ups at InfiniNet. It's safe to say that her and Quinn do not get a long though she does appreciate their abilities and that is enough to tolerate their presence.

Negative
Faction - The Butterfly Brigade - The hacker group that Quinn was formerly associated with. While most of them were arrested during the raid, many of the more crafty members were able to allude the authorities and are still at large but have been quiet ever since. Quinn's main rivals, Spicebush and Duke Of Burgundy, were among those who got away. (Look, butterfly species are all named wonderful and ridiculous things so... I couldn't resist.)

While our characters relationships with each other aren't a factor in the mechanics is would probably be good to at least define how/if they know each other before starting, y'know?

Positive - Etienne Larousse, a.k.a. yvy. An InfiniNet employee living in France who got assigned to teach Mary the ropes of her new job. Mostly he works on cases involving finance, fraud, or theft, but every once in a while he'll drop by to see how Mary's doing.

Ambivalent - the Guild Council. A loose organization that deals with arguments between guilds, petitions InfiniNet for new features that its members care about, that sort of thing. Mary used to be KotW's representative, so she knows a lot of the members, but some still view her as kind of a traitor.

Negative - Lightworks. A criminal group with unclear goals; they're active on the Net but also in realspace. Mary got one of their members caught, pretty much by accident, and now they've got something of a vendetta against her. They've stolen personal information in the past, and it's got Mary very nervous.

Mister Genesis/Lawford

---Positive: Lawford Grey Helms II; angel investor, cutthroat businessman, one of the richest men on earth, and father to Lawford III. Through his closely-held holding corporation, The Armet Group, he casts a wide web of influence though the business and financial words. He dotes on his son a bit, and while he respects his son's wishes against excessive interference in his life, he can't help but pull a few strings behind the scenes should he feel the need.

---Ambivalent: Iota Beta Mu. Lawford's highly prestigious fraternity. Only accepts Ivy League IT majors. Lawford knows quiet a few of them through alumni-sponsored national events. While he does have a number of friends among them, just as many don't care for him, and more still have no real strong opinion.

---Negative: While not an organization as such, plenty of people want a piece of Lawford Grey Helms II: businessmen, politicians, journalists, crime bosses, hackers, and activists, plenty of whom are absolutely willing to take out their hostility on the man's son.

"yeah, the really weird part is, he's an admin, he'd know not to leave his stuff all messed up like this," she replies to SilverHat, poking at the skeleton uncertainly. "uh, are we sure we're the first ones to get in here?"
