Hello goons. I would like to share some photos of a creepy old house with you.

I love old houses. I often dream of living in a beautiful old two story house with a veranda that I could also convert into a sweet looking haunted house for Halloween. There are a lot of older houses near where I live and I like walking the neighbourhood and admiring them, even though I could never afford to live in any of them.

Just a few blocks away, there's a row of houses facing the river valley. Gorgeous, historical homes and mini mansions that would set you back at least a million dollars. Since I've been living nearby for the last few years, I've noticed this seemingly abandoned house on the street.

Oh, you don't see a house there? Let's try another angle.

Ah, here we go!

As you can see, there's a hole in the screen door, a bunch of dead vines, and the railing for the second floor balcony is mostly gone. Couple that with the massive overgrowth surrounding the house and it looks pretty abandoned. I assumed it would have been torn down in short order, but it's still there.

So the other day, I decided to walk up to the front door. The screen door with the hole in it is shut tight and I couldn't budge it, but this is what I saw.

The name next to the door says "Joseph A Clarke". Great! With a name, I can figure out who this guy is and maybe find out why this house is in the state it's in! But then I thought the name sounded familiar. Turns out, it's this guy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Clarke_(politician)

Former Mayor of the city, "Fightin' Joe Clarke. This guy had a football stadium named after him.

Huh... so this is not just any old house, this is a historical old house. A few of houses in the neighbourhood that have historical significance have little plaques on the front lawns detailing the history of the building, and who lived in it. All the more reason to be curious as to why this place seems to have been left to rot.

After some more digging on the internet, I discovered that his daughter Muriel had inherited the home and had been living there up until 2011. She seems to be a really fascinating woman in her own right. There's an article about her on page 3 of this Retired Teacher's Association newsletter. http://www.edmontonrta.org/newslettermarch2011.pdf

It seems she never married and never had children. She presumably has no living relatives and would be 98 years old today.

I decided to go around the house and take a peek around back. Maybe someone was still living there and using the back door?

Side of the house. You can see where a shingle has taken residence in the tree branches.

Evidence of a leaky faucet. If no one was living here, then why would the water still be on?

Back yard. Overrun with plants and thistles. Some pretty flowers though.

Back view. There are a bunch of broken and low hanging branches covering the way to the back door.

Before making my way to the door, I decide to call the phone number I found for Muriel. If it rang, I wanted to see if I could hear a phone ringing from in the house. But there was no ringing as I was immediately told that the number I had dialled was no longer in service.

So, up to the back door we go! The stairs to this door were about as busted as the stairs out front and I had to duck under several branches.

I open the screen door and knock, only for the door to give way. It wasn't even fully closed!

The only thing keeping the door closed is a single chain.

Popping my hand in a bit, these are the best pictures I could get of the interior. There's some very retro wallpaper.

Paint peeling away from the ceiling.

And some more newspapers on the kitchen table. The inside also smelled quite musty.

So, considering that the person who was most recently living here was a very old lady who walked with a cane and seemed to have no living relatives, what is the likelihood of her having died in this house a few years back with no one to find her? I think the only other likely possibility is that she's in long term care in a hospital and has no one to come look after her home.

Hopefully, she's still alive somewhere, instead of decomposing inside the house. I'd really like to find out what happened to her.

I just happen to be at a microfilm library with OP's local newspapers. Missing families from that very same house in '57, '65, '72 and '73.
A brief mention of a James Clarke being sent to prison for the violently mentally ill is in there. No parole until 2015 so

Some of that poo poo looks rather clean and new for being abandoned.

If someone catches you trying to break in just tell them that you're thinking about buying the place and fixing it up, that's usually a good excuse for B&E.

I'm thinking of doing a wellness check, yes. If I call for one and come back in a few days to see the place boarded up and put up for auction, then I guess I'll have my answer.

Also, perhaps I'll get in touch with the historical society as well.

That would be a good idea to see how long a place has been abandoned. An expiration date on any milk will give you a pretty accurate date.

Samuel L. ACKSYN posted:

I'm not breaking in. I went around back to knock on the back door. I really did want to know if someone was living there, squatters or not. I made no attempt to undo the chain on the door. I just popped the camera in a touch to get some photos with no glare. As much as I would love to explore this old house, I don't want to commit any crimes.

I posted this thread because finding out about this place has been really interesting so far and I know some other goons like photos of weird abandoned places.
