Looking at the wiki, MG1 is important. It introduces what Big Boss is doing a year after TPP. It introduces Gray Fox, and how he knows Snake. It shows why Snake knows what Metal Gears are, and gives him a previous mission to have become a "Legendary Soldier" from.

It's plot basically sets the stage for 1, and was referenced often in 1, despite how basic it was in many ways.

2 introduces Gray Fox dying....but his actions in 1/how he disappears in 1 seems like more then enough setup for what he becomes in MGS1. And I don't remember him mentioning Zanzibar Land at all in MGS1.

It introduces Big Boss again, but he was already dealt with in 1, and I don't remember Snake mentioning he had to face him twice now.

The whole algae/oil/mercenary land thing is never talked about again in any of the games, quickly falling behind the popularity of the Metal Gears/Patriots/crazy nonsense.

While Campbell and Miller come back, I don't think either actually reference the events of 2 at all in MGS1, or MGS4.

Maybe I just missed the references to it, but it doesn't really seem to matter as much as MG1.

I ask because I'm thinking of finally going back to play them, and well, I'm not exactly the biggest fan of games that old I didn't play before to have some sort of nostalgia for. I can probably get through 1, but both might be a bit of a challenge. Want to see if I was forgetting any mentions of Zanzibar Land from 1/4 that might make it more important then it seems to be.

they mention stuff like thats when big boss told snake he was his father (although that didnt actually happen) and grey fox/snake/campbell talk about the fight in the minefield in 2. zanzibar land is meant to be the new outer heaven nation anyways so always figured they would mean that when they spoke about big boss's dream, can't really think about much else, just a few things in the briefing tapes nothing else. but yeah its pretty much forgotten in favor of that whacky shadow moses incident.

that said, mg2 has aged well, mg1 has not.

Hey guys the checkpoint system is basically an invisible ring around each outpost and base, you hear a music cue when you get close enough and you can exit back and forth to constantly keep saving.

it took me the length of most mgs games but oh boy it was a great feeling.

That mission though, i didnt watch the intro credits so i had no idea what was going to go down once i got the stinger. Started to freak out when the radio nearby changed into some creepy silent hill poo poo and then i saw the fog and it was like, drat gently caress this bonus. The fight itself is not up to the hights of previous games but visually it was loving great, the way they would move and tje creepyness of it all. So good.

So with that im not going to watch the intro credits anymore, much better not knowing whats going to turn up in a routine mission.

i killed the bosses. i think they shoot up the points depending on how many you kill. i s ranked mission 6 too after taking 3 hours to do it, was really surprised by that.

also im finding i enjoy missions much more (more than i already did anyway) if i dont look at the screen during the intro, that way i had no idea what was going down or who was gonna show up.

Definitely takes a lot of fuel to build a nuke, but I made it a point to save up fuel till I had enough. Its less stressful at least knowing you can build and dismantle a nuke for the trophies, not worrying about pulling off a FOB heist to do it.

can't will till they confirm the only way to unlock the hidden ending is only through dismantling nukes in fob only, ah the shitstorm.

i wouldnt be surprised. (note i am serious. there is an hidden ending tied to fobs, konami keep taking it off youtube when modders unlock it though, sounds like you need to disarm 50 nukes or its being saved for some online event bullshit)

that said, the recent thing at TGS had some update about new sideops coming, i couldn't translate it but they showed zombie hunting side ops around the power plant along with those new costumes... i haven't finished the game so i dont know if thats actually in the base game or what so i could be wrong.
