gently caress, this was a legitimate factor in my decision to return to the Greater Seattle Area, or just somewhere in the PNW. That's kinda heartbreaking, although I agree it got mangled before it got killed anyways.

Yeah, both Oregon and Washington failed to pass them, but I'm hoping next year the folks working to get them passed will be extra-savvy and have a better time getting a less ridiculous splitting law passed.

I think Washington's ended up the worst, but ours wasn't much better. And we didn't have filtering at a stoplight, either, which seems like it should be in there.

It's the Seattle/Washington process (WE NEED MORE STUDIES/THE CHILDREN!).

But! There are a few things going on in our favor:

1) We're one of few states where this is even being talked about / coming up so that's a great start
2) That university study was a glowing support for lane splitting; so we have favorable data
3) Washington is very rarely the FIRST state to do something but very often the second or third; we're progressive but we don't like leading the charge. If California can get a law on paper we'll follow suit.

I really think it'll happen in then next 5-10. I mean, traffic here is so SO SO very hosed. Something's got to give. At some point every Subaru and Prius idling on I5 will have to admit "Well, at least SOMEBODY would be moving"

CA doesnt need a law, things seem to be working fine. A new law formalizing what everyone already does would come with all kinds of idiotic restrictions like the WA one had where a bunch of people who are scared of motorcycles and know nothing about them or anything else beyond how to take a bribe decide how they think you should be riding, and you'll end up with some poo poo about how you can only do it at certain speeds on certain roads in certain lanes and only between 6-9 AM and 3-6 PM on federally recognized holidays having to do with motorsports.

After spending a few days last week down in CA i'm adding them back to the list of places i'm looking at for a job to gtfo of here, because being somewhat immune to traffic is such a massive quality of life thing that i may be willing to accept the heat and the desertification and all the other stupid poo poo down there for a while.

There was a perfectly acceptable law proposed that went nowhere because of idiotic motorcyclists. (Splitting up to 50mph, at up to a 15mph delta). It got stopped because a bunch of morons whined about how they have to be able to split when the flow of traffic is 55+ in "order to be safe". There were no other restrictions in the law besides the speed ones. Remember, in CA, the primary folks who keep splitting legal here are the CHP, so they sorta know what they're doing when it comes to dealing with highways and poo poo.

Also of note is that this was splitting at up to 50mph speed of traffic, so you could be splitting up to 65mph. Just loving stupid, we had a really good chance at a reasonable law backed up by a reasonable interpretation of the studies and instead the no helmet fucktards ruined it for everyone.

I want to get out every Saturday that isn't all lovely. Things standing in my way: slick fallen leaves all over the road, flag football games.

Got up to rat tap pass a couple weekends ago and then tried last weekend but had to turn around due to some fallen birch trees in the road.

I suppose a chainsaw goes on my xmas list.

A few friends and I are riding Barlow rd and Bennet Pass in the Mt. Hood National Forest again this coming Saturday (17th). If you have a dualsport and want to hoon it up, we're meeting up at SE 34th and Belmont and riding out from there around 10am. We'll be taking the scenic way out Marmot -> Lolo and likely driving back in the cold dark night. If you're interested, send a PM.

How far do you want to travel? The local company gear shop is Eagle Leather on the 512 exit in Lakewood/Tacoma and their other location is in Auburn before you leave town to the Muckleshoot casino.
There's a Cyclegear in Auburn, Tacoma and Lynwood. Any dealer will have gear. Touratech in SODO has more adventure/dual sport style stuff.

Seattle Cycle Center and Triumph of Seattle. The latter will have fancier stuff but both are good shops with nice people. Both are on 99.

I'm still busing it for the foreseeable future - some of those places might as well be on the moon :yosbutt:

A few are close enough to check out, but I may just end up getting super cheap gloves online for the time being just to meet Evergreen's minimum PPE requirements for their training course. I can worry about getting quality gloves later if/when I get the rest of the gear I'll need.

Just order the cheapest Bilt gloves off cyclegear.com, keep the invoice, then return/warranty them out at the nearest store when you get a chance to go in. Use what you paid for a decent set of gloves.

Just stop in at a City Target or something and get some cheapo $5 gardening gloves if it's just for Evergreen. You won't be going over 20 mph for most of the course, the gear is just for legal liability. Upgrade when you're really out riding.

Two things:

I don't have pm because I'm cheap

I'm riding Bremerton track tomorrow with some work friends. We will be the three with expensive KTMs but no skill.

Which reminds me, can I get an all money no skill sticker around here?

Yeah, I don't think I'll need titanium reinforced knuckles for driving around cones in a parking lot. I'm just (overly) concerned about showing up after waiting forever for the class and getting the boot, heh. I think I have some Mechanix-type gloves kicking around somewhere, I should see if I can find those.

The track was great today. Better atmosphere than the other tracks around here. Spiffness I can't go tomorrow but I have a group of friends that's going. Maybe crash into them for me. They'll be the ones all on KTMs but not very good because all money no skill.

Jesus christ, every time Enumclaw came up (it did a lot?) during my course, this older guy in class would loudly proclaim "THAT'S HORSE COUNTRY" and then do a very obvious "hey, c'mon guys, someone got that right?" look all around.

So I totally put a deposit on a bike last Saturday :getin:

The weather was pretty lovely on and off so I didn't actually buy it that day. I think I'm going to try my hand at hot doggin it back to Seattle from Bham on WA9 this week if the weather clears up a bit.

Am I going to die a lot, or just a little? :iiam:

Have you ridden much? SR9 is okay since you can go 40/50, but for about one week after training anything 30+ MPH was pant-making GBS threads territory, took me a while to work up the familiarity to feel confident on the highway. Worst case, budget the day and take it slow on surface streets coming down.
