I think Murphy has named Baz Luhrmann as an important influence for Freak Show, which explains the grand colorful set designs and the anachronistic music numbers.Tenzarin posted:Don't forget the museum lady basically implied to kill the freaks to sell them to her. It was also implied anytime he needed to 'terrorize' people he would just whip it out and shake his massive plot hole at people. Don't remind me. The scene when he hypnotized the strongman with his trouser snake was one of the stupidest ever put to film.

Tenzarin posted:You try having your wife and her best friend cuck you while you watch. I get that he was nuts, but he shows up, bangs the twins, has a confrontation with Dandy, saws Maggie in half then just bounces and turns himself in for killing his doll. I just remember staring at the screen, like 'WTF just happened?" I think I said it in the Freak Show thread, but if they had introduced him earlier and had more time to explore his character and maybe give him a plotline of him and Dandy trying to out-crazy one another because of the twins, I think it would have made more sense. Instead we got what we got. The problem was after Twisty died, the show lost all coherence. Dandy was just Dandy, doing Dandy things, the grifters were like 'yeah let's kill these freaks!' but everything just seemed to lose coherence. E: I can't wait to see which two female characters are going to vie for Evan Peters's affections this season! I just want that plot element to stop. Good gravy.

kjetting posted:While we are waiting, what do you all think were the best and worst parts of each season? Season 1: Pros: - -The reveal with Violet was genuinely surprising to me and made sense and I felt engaged and felt sad. -Just in general, how it was centered around this family and all these antagonizing forces were happening around/to them. It was about this family. It was about this house. It was very focused and kept the story feeling very engaging. Cons: -CROATOAN! A minor gripe for me, but when I know an actual historical reference and I'm watching a show mangle it into some poor attempt at mystical magic, it's a little cringeworthy to me. -Moira's character. I love Alexandra Breckinridge (She grew up a couple towns away from me!) and think Frances Conroy is great, but Moira as a character stood out as a major exception to the rules of the house as we understood them. The change in personality from when she was alive and her ability to appear as an old woman were things that didn't make sense, but still managed to work because everyone made it work. -How there are all these ghosts in this place, but none of them showed up until they received a proper introduction, and were all so polite to wait their turns to terrorize/help the family. Just a tad too convenient, but again, a minor gripe. Season 2: Pros: -Again, you start off with tight focus: Crazed lunatic accused of murder sent to asylum. Hungry reporter wanting to do expose on treatment at asylum. Strict bitch of a nun wanting to maintain order at asylum fucks everyone over. It's all about the asylum. Everything comes back to the asylum and what makes it such a horrible place. Even when you add in nazi doctor and serial killer, it still tied back to the asylum. -Even though you spent most of the time inside a building, you absolutely felt the era come through. You knew this was taking place in the 60's because everything reflected that very strongly. Excellent themeing and atmosphere. Cons: -Alien subplot was problematic. It did serve a purpose at times, but never felt like it was necessary or fully explored. I don't know if I would have wanted more or it or not wanted it at all. -Devil subplot was also problematic. It suffered the same problems as the alien stuff. I wonder if they could have written the season without any supernatural elements at all and still have gotten to the same beats. What if Mary Eunice just started to break down mentally instead of being possessed by the devil? What if there was a belief that aliens were out there, but there actually were no aliens and people actually were just having psychotic episodes? What if Bloodyface (which is a terrible name) was more involved in terrorizing patients and creating an alien hoax to push Kit to a breaking point and make him believe he committed the Bloodyface murders? Things like that. Season 3: Pros: -Riley Voelkel (young Fiona) is really hot. -Lily Rabe as Misty Day was really fun. -Frances Conroy playing the theremin and giving no fucks. Cons: -Literally everything else. Season 4 Pros: -Mat Fraser (Paul) was a joy to watch and I would love to see him come back in another season. Horribly underused dude. -Twisty's design was really creepy and it was nice to see that pulled off so well. -Dandy was fun at times. The trandemark inconsistency of the show worked really well for him. A show that doesn't know what it wants to do featuring a character that doesn't know what he wants to do ends up being a pretty good match, it turns out. Cons: -HELLO GABOUREY SIDIBE HOW ARE YOU THANK YOU FOR CALLING PLEASE TELL ME ALL YOUR BACKSTORY IN REALLY STILTED DIALOGUE. HELLO THEO HUXTABLE LET'S HAVE ANGELA BASSETT TELL THE AUDIENCE YOUR FULL NAME FOR NO REASON. HELLO LAST EPISODE LET'S HAVE EVERYONE WRAP UP AND REMINISCE ABOUT WHAT THEY WANT THROUGH IN THE PREVIOUS EPISODES. The writing is so loving bad. Was it this bad in the previous season? I can't remember and I am probably better off for that. -The songs. Why songs? Why so many songs? Why none of them from the 50's? Why are you singing a song about Jim loving Morrison? That takes me out of this poo poo so hard. Which brings me to. -Never once did I feel like this was in the 50's. There were some things made to look like it was the 50's, but there was just no atmosphere behind it. -American Horror Story: (sometimes we remember this is about a) Freak Show. How many times did these people actually put on their show? I get you don't want redundancy in seeing them do the same poo poo every episode, but I mean there is so very little about the show itself. We see snippets of a couple shows (one of which is played to an empty audience thanks to Dandy, and most of them focus on songs instead of the actual freak show), we see talking at rehearsals a couple times, but there is so little focus on the actual "freak show" aspect that it's more like American Horror Story: Differently-Abled Commune than anything else. -I could keep going because it's so fresh in my mind but I will just say that while watching Freak Show, I found myself continuously pausing to allow myself to process the fresh hell I was observing before I could continue with the episode. Ok - I'm hopeful for this season for one reason. If you look at the first two seasons, the really good seasons, they are named Murderhouse and Asylum. The terrible seasons were Coven and Freakshow. One obvious difference is that the murderhouse and the asylum were PLACES and the coven and freakshow were PEOPLE. Something about having the setting as the center of the story, instead of the characters, works so much better in some way. So here's hoping that Hotel will be able to go back to whatever the formula was that made the first two seasons magical. Eh, who am I kidding, it'll be terrible, but I'll watch it all anyway. Because I hate myself like that.

If this show is set in the 50s why is Elsa dressed like Bowie and singing Life on Mars? My immersion is ruined.

Len posted:If this show is set in the 50s why is Elsa dressed like Bowie and singing Life on Mars? My immersion is ruined. It was really the Lana Del Ray song that bothered me the most because there were lyrics about Jim Morrison in it, and he was only 9 or 10 at the time the show was supposed to be set. I don't think there was anything in the other songs that really "dated" them, but I still don't see why they couldn't have used songs from the 50's. Seeing a mosh pit start up while Sarah Paulson sang Fiona Apple, or having them bust out a Nirvana song for absolutely no context was just so baffling to me.
