Oh yeah, baby. Frame your suffering as a masterpiece. Only one problem - no one's watching. It's boring, buddy, boring as death.

One of the tightest seasons in recent history has wrapped up and now it's time for the Final 8 to duke it out. The postseason/playoffs are called simple The Finals here in Australia.
This is the perfect time to get a taste of Aussie Rules if you missed the season or simply want to see some of the best games on offer for the year.

Dunno what the hell Australian Football is? Watch this.

Want to watch matches online? The AFL Finals package for international streaming can be found here at a cost of $65AU or about $45US.
If you need even more information and history, read the OP to this season's thread.

The AFL's Finals hub, showing ticketing, scheduling, merch and everything else can be found here

So how does the AFL finals all shake out?

The teams that finished in the top 4 play each other in the first week to progress straight to the Preliminary Final, the loser gets a second chance against the winners of the Elimination finals, played by the teams that finished 5-8. Following that is the Preliminary Finals which gate entry to the Grand Final, the biggest event on the Australian sporting calendar.

Here's the lowdown on the remaining teams.

MUSCULAR BEAVER's writeup -

Summary:
Coming off a very Richmond-like 9th place ladder finish in 2014, Adam Simpson looked to improve on the foundations and game plan he had set down in his first year as coach. Unfortunately, his second season looked to be an early write-off with 2 losses from 3 games, including an absolute towelling up in the first Western Derby against Fremantle. The team then managed to go under everyones' radar and win a number of games against middling and lower positioned teams, including a smashing of the up and comers GWS and the old flailing heavyweights Geelong. Because of a draw that had them facing no real top-8 contenders until later in the season, many had called the team flat track bullies as they were now surprisingly 2nd spot on the ladder. However, a hard-fought victory against a solid Richmond side in the mid season split round showed that the team was the real deal. A few stutters late in the season included a draw against Gold Coast and a loss at home to premiership favourites the Hawks, but a huge bounce back demolishing of the Dockers in the year's 2nd western derby showed we were still ready for finals.

Backs:
Despite our back line dropping like flies to month-long injuries (McGinnity and McGovern), the team continues to have surprising depth up back.
Hurn and Schofield week in week out continue to mop up out of the back line providing that carry up the flank and to the wing.
Yeo is showing us that he has an amazing aerial game for a mid-size utility, he'll surely become a household name.
Wellingham has really levelled up since he has found his role in the backline.

Centres:
Priddis continues to show why he won a Brownlow last year, effortlessly getting contested possessions and disposals without a fuss.
Masten had a strong quiet achievers year, only coming up for air between bites of a player's arm.
NicNat has really stepped up as our main ruckman while Sinclair and Lycett develop, but his ability to crum and run and play like a rover while taking the odd flashy overhead mark is why he is such a head turning athlete.
Gaff has become the league leader in vacuuming up uncontested possessions and has an amazing ability to find empty space and run with the ball (watch this guy's count on Brownlow night I reckon).

Forwards:
Darling has found a comfortable place this year playing up the ground a bit more, which has freed up Coleman medalist Kennedy to lead and mark freely inside the 50.
LeCras finally got his accurate boots on this year and showed us how dangerous a good marking small forward he was before a few injury setbacks.
Hill got called back as a regular in the side and while he can still go missing for ages, he has shown us that he can put his hand up in close matches and kick that crucial goal.
We've got one of the best and tallest forward lines in the league which has always been one of our weaker areas in the club's history, but in some games we waste opportunities and kick too many behinds early on.

Welcome back:
Murray Newman, after a strong one hit wonder performance a few years ago, he went to jail, then to WAFL (which is like a kind of jail), then came back on as a sub a few weeks ago and kicked a goal.
Also Mark Hutchings, where the gently caress did you go for so long?

In future:
Look out for Yeo, Sheppard, Sheed and Cripps, as well as the people in bright green on the field - you may think they're umpires but they're actually contracted West Coast players.

Conclusion:
For the first time ever, Western Australian teams sit 1&2 on the ladder and could very well meet in a prelim or the grand final. If this is the case, the ground underneath Perth may split open and swallow everyone and may we all burn in eternal hell fire together.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Testekill's writeup -

Summary:
To put it simply, the Western Bulldogs had a horror end to 2014. They were falling apart on the field, there was reported dissent behind the scenes, captain Ryan Griffen walked out on the club, and coach Brendan McCartney fell on his sword. There were no expectations for 2015, especially not after 2014 Best & Fairest winner Tom Liberatore tore an ACL in the opening game of the preseason. But rookie coach Luke Beveridge has built one of the most exciting teams and spritual leader Robert Murphy has led the club to heights that they had never expected despite having the second least experienced list in the AFL.

Things didn't quite fall into place until round 4 against their upcoming elimination final opponents Adelaide. The Bulldogs recovered from a severe beating in Tasmania at the hands of Hawthorn with a 57 point demolition of the Crows, followed by a hard fought victory in the rain against Sydney. The wheels came off slightly during the middle of the season with losses to St Kilda, Port Adelaide & Melbourne and unconvincing victories over St Kilda, Brisbane & Carlton but from round 15 onwards the Doggies featured in the top three offensively & defensively.
Still a young team and possessing only four players with finals experience on their list, there is still room to improve for the pups and even making finals is far beyond expectations let alone being able to win one.

Backs:
Let's get this out of the way first, the Bulldogs aren't amazing one-on-one defenders. They instead are able to slow down the opponents inside 50's enough that their team defense makes it difficult to take a mark inside 50 or to even get a ground ball.
Veterans like Robert Murphy & Matthew Boyd have hit career best form despite both being 33 and Boyd being an inside midfielder that was not known for his usage of the ball.
Dale Morris is still the brave warrior that he has always been, constantly punching above his weight and still our best tall defender while Easton Wood is a favourite for All Australian selection thanks to posting elite numbers for intercept marks and Jason Johannisen has been deadly off of half back.
The biggest concern is that players like Hamling, Roberts & Talia are all inexperienced players and none are really cut out for playing against a player like Josh Kennedy who is a powerful mark.

Centres:
Bontempelli. Dahlhaus. Macrae. Wallis. Picken. Hunter

All six of these men have stepped up in a massive way and have been instrumental to our rise. Bontempelli is rated in the top 20 players in the AFL based on player ratings and is the youngest player to place in the top 20, beating out Chad Wingard who had been a few months older when he'd placed. The Bont has also shown a dangerous ability to present a marking option in the forward line as a roaming KPF sized player.
Mitch Wallis has finally shown why he was rated as equal to Tom Liberatore when drafted and why he is seen as a future captain of the club. There are concerns that he may not be able to play with Libba as both are similar players but he has shown the ability to present as a marking target up forward by doubling his career total of goals by picking up 15 for the season.
Dahlhaus was always seen as exciting and played with his heart on his sleeve but he had never been able to play primarily midfield like he is now.
Macrae is the forgotten man out of our young stars, never getting the recognition of Bontempelli or Stringer. This is despite averaging 27 disposals a game and picking up a respectable 89 clearances for the home & away season.
Hunter looked on the outs earlier this season after being involved in a betting scandal involving Footscray VFL teammate David Iaccarino. But his last two months have been as good as some of the best in the season, notching up 24+ touches six times playing on the wing. If he can kick more goals then he'll be quite the handy player indeed.
Finally there is Liam Picken. He's not the most naturally talented and had mostly only been used as a tagger but Beveridge freed him up to play a more attacking side to his game and allowing him to drift forward and kick goals.

Forwards:
The Bulldogs forward line has been deadly this season with Stringer, Dickson & Crameri combining for 129 goals between them. Stringer is an utter freak of a player and is just regaining his ability to move aggressively after a broken leg in 2012.
Dickson is one of the most accurate forwards in the game, not missing a goal in 13 games and having a streak of 21 goals without kicking a behind. He has also kicked 17 goals against teams in the top 8 including a bag of 7 against Fremantle.
Crameri missed 5 games during the middle of the season but from round 17 onwards he has kicked at least two goals in all games except for round 23. All three of these players present interesting defensive matchup issues. Stringer & Crameri are both powerful medium-tall forwards but both cover the ground really well. Ideal match ups are few and far between; too strong for small defenders but too mobile for tall defenders.
The weak link is Jack Redpath. He's built like a monster and crashes packs as often as possible but he doesn't take enough marks and loses his footing too easily. Ideally Tom Boyd would be playing but he currently still working on building his tank and cutting weight that GWS had him put on.

The other guys:
The Bulldogs have also performed well in the VFL, making the finals for the second year in their short lived history. I'm not confident of our chances to win back-to-back flags but it's a nice problem to have where both our seniors and reserves are making finals.

The documentary "Sons of the West" does a great job giving an overview of how the Dogs have travelled this season through the eyes of the universally respected, best human in the competition Bob Murphy.

RICHMOND TIGERS

pkid's writeup -

Summary:
Smashed out of the 2014 finals in 9 minutes by Port Adelaide last year it was pretty unclear what the Tigers would dish up in 2015. The team started well with a win in the opening round but then went on be 2-4 after 6 games, losing to The Dogs (not a bad loss in hindsight) and the Demons. With the jungle drums beating the team went out and won 4 on the trot including beating ladder leader Freo in Perth to get their season back on track. Going 9-3 after the bye and beating every team above them bar West Coast has cemented a 3rd finals appearance in a row with the knowledge they can beat anyone on their day.

Backs:
Solid isn't a strong enough word. Rance will be the all-Australian full back to the 2nd year running, Chaplin has been playing great footy, Vlaustin has certainly showed why he was taken with such a high pick in the draft with good speed and great awareness. Grimes, often plauged by injury in the past, has been able to get on the park most weeks and his form has benefits by being consistently out there. Taylor Hunt has been the surprise packet down back by providing run and carry through the midfield. Houli has had a great year too but his brainfade against Freo probably has cost Richmond a top 4 finish.

Centres:
Cotchin has had a quieter year this year, not to say he has been bad but he has certainly been down on his form in previous years. Dustin Martin has gone up another notch. Notorious for going missing in games in the past, he consistently provided 4 quarter efforts throughout 2015. Grigg, like Hunt, has given us great run and carry going forward and has kicked a few himself. Ellis continues to rack up possessions like they're going out of style but the biggest improvement has been Shane Edwards. He would have been a shoe-in for the Richmond B&F before his injury. He has absolutely moved into the elite class this year.

Forwards:
Jack Riewoldt has had an ok year. Down on goals but this is probably more due to the improved performance of the forwardline around him. Brett Deledio up forward has been incredible. He missed the first 6 games but should still be an All Australian. He has incredible hands and is a great kick for goal. Much maligned Ty Vickery has also taken a huge step in his career in the last 3rd of the season, kicking bags of goals and taking strong marks he has cemented his spot in the team and his late season form may lead to Ben Griffiths looking for a new home. Chris Newman has also bobbed up here and there in the forwardline in his last season.

Welcome back:
Ty Vickery - missing after belting Dean Cox last year came back mid-year and became an instrumental part of the team.

In future:
Ben Lennon, Corey Ellis and Connor Menadue all played games this season. Lennon will play finals and looks to be a younger version of Deledio. Great hands, great kick. Ellis might already have the best kick at the club. Find the clip of him hitting Lids lace out during the Freo game through traffic if you can it was amazing.

Conclusion:
Sluggest start cost them a top 4 finish. Should have the double chance. Instead we have to beat North to get a crack at (most likely) Sydney. Good enough to make a prelim. Potentially good enough to win a prelim too.

FREMANTLE DOCKERS

spedman's contribution -

Summary:
Freo supporters held their collective breath for the first month of the season, just hoping to come out of it 50:50, with a daunting run of Port/Geel/WCE/Syd, and were pleasantly surprised to come out of it all so well. The excellent form continued until the giant slayers Richmond came to town in Rd 10 and smashed the purples in the first quarter and then held on for an excellent win, leaving Freo 10/1 going into the bye. The big news of the start of the season being the loss of Johnson, the most influential Freo backman, leaving the side vulnerable down back and losing a lot of creative flare. During this run of wins, Fyfe was unstoppable, doing as he pleased and dragging the team over the line when necessary. Over the second half of the season the team seemed to be going through the motions, winning the games they should and maintaining the top spot on the ladder a game or two clear. However, there were some very notable losses against fellow finalists, a belting from the Hawks in Tassie, and a first quarter blitz from the Eagles setting up a comfortable win. The teams biggest issue is the lack of scoring fire-power in the second half of the season, where the extra scoring was coming from the mid-field/wings dried up, with only one 100+ score since round 8 against a hapless Melbourne at Subiaco.
This is the best chance Freo have ever had to win a flag with a nearly fully fit team, a second chance/home final, the Hawks/Swans having to travel first week of the finals, and WC being hobbled by backline injuries.

Back:
The full contingent of big Freo backman are fit in the finals for the first time in a number of years, McPharlin/Johnson/Dawson with a young star Alex Pearce able to do an excellent job need be. Ibbotson has had a solid year, making up for the 10 week loss of Johnson, mopping up and getting the ball out, and will be relieved to have the big guys back. Spurr and Sutcliffe have been serviceable as small defenders, never outstanding but not often beaten. This is the heart of any Lyon side, and fully fit, the back group will be very hard to beat come September.

Middle:
Freo's early season dominance was due to their big powerful mid-field of Fyfe/Mundy/Barlow all 6'2"+, with the biggest of them all Sandilands in the ruck. The Sandilands/Fyfe combo was unstoppable at the start of the season, but as Fyfe built up soreness/niggles the dominance wained. With a couple of weeks off for Fyfe and a rest for Sandi, it will be telling to Freo's finals chances if the Sandi/Fyfe combo can dominate. Hill and Pearce have been providing excellent outside service with plenty of run and long kicks, however there is alway question marks over D. Pearce's ability to kill goals when needed. And one must not forget Neale, who has been a much needed addition to the mid-field, providing a chop-out to the big guys, that extra support in the middle that was so badly missing in the 2013 GF when the mid-field ran out of puff in the last quarter. The big question about the mid-field is who will back up Sandi, with Griffen going down late in the season with a hammy, will it be the horribly out of form Z Clarke, the young Hannath or the versatile but green Taberner?

Forward:
The forward line is the biggest question mark on the Freo team, with the lack of score board impact over the second half of the season. Pavlich is his usual reliable best, and can been relied upon in finals, Mayne has found form coming into the second half of the season, but has been quite inaccurate, and Walters has had an up and down season and is still searching for his 2013 form. The player everyone loves to hate Ballantyne is due back first round of the finals, and is only a maybe at this point after tearing his pec a few months ago, and would be a very valuable addition. Other talls have been tried with A Pearce looking good in the later portion of the season, with Taberner being trialled for most of the early part of the season as a foil to Pav. Both these players may get the nod with Taberner playing as a forward/ruck and Pearce as a swing man.

Welcome back:
A fit McPharlin/Johnson and Mayne who went missing in 2014.

Conclusion:
As stated earlier, best opportunity for Freo to win a flag in years, the first half of the season showed they have the goods, but the big question is, can they replicate it in Sep/Oct and get that first illusive flag.

NTRabbit's poetry -

Summary:
Adelaide entered the season anew,
Fresh coach, new plan, new desire to win.
They began with thumpings of finalists,
learning and growing through each victory
and through fewer defeats than last season.
Disaster struck in July; Phil Walsh, the
new coach, tragically lost in the cold morn'.
weeks passed, Camporeale stepped in to
fill the chair, and Woosha came from the west.
Regrouped, and determined to see the Walsh
plan through, the Crows kicked on to make it in,
with successive wins over Tigers and
Bombers and Lions and Eagles, sending
a message to the rest of the comp - we
are here now, and we are coming for you.

Back:
What can be said about the Adelaide defence?
It's built around Daniel Talia, or Lord Commander Daniel to me and you,
As really, you will be told by anyone with any sense.

We have a little bloke who small forwards he sometimes does dispense,
Luke Brown is the name, and if you don't know him I don't blame you,
What can be said about the Adelaide defence?

To look at him, you might think Kyle Hartigan to be immense,
but as a second tall he's flummoxed, and flops, it's true
As really, you will be told by anyone with any sense.

Jake lever is a superstar, though only in a future tense,
as a third tall he has a future, once no longer a skinny dude,
What can be said about the Adelaide defence?

It's our rebounding defenders where we run you through,
what else can be said about the Adelaide defence,
Rory Laird, the intercept maestro, and Brodie Smith with his super right shoe,
as really, you will be told by anyone with any AFL sense.

Middle:
It all comes down to Patrick Dangerfield,
with Jacobs the towering, masterful ruck.,
and Sloane, fierce, gut busting and steeled,
to give our midfield its buck.
Mighty Scott Thompson is our bulging centre man,
Richard Douglas the tireless ruck rover,
Without them firing we're an also ran,
our season already over
A bunch of kids are the supporting brigade,
names like Atkins, Knight, Lyons and Crouch,
in order to show this finals run is no charade,
these boys will have to show to a man they're no slouch,
The midfield is the most important line if in modern football you seek to win,
and honestly with the current team, it's fifty-fifty the season ends up in the bin.

Forward:
Oh Zeus! Oh Poseidon! The Adelaide forward line,
such power, Olympian in majesty,
even with thou brother Hades, it usurps your strength combined,

Taylor Walker, a figure so immense and imposing,
his talents unbound in the air and on the earth,
the captain of this team gives all defenders a hosing,

Josh Jenkins, so tall, strong and fast is he
that a matchup for his lead and his leap,
will always prove difficult to fine, indeed

Eddie Betts is though it were Dionysus himself come amongst us,
his array of tricks and fantastical shots at goal are such theatre,
as to provoke joy and ecstasy amongst all, even opposition, who witness

A streak of red flashes from pocket to flank to wing and back once more,
is it Hermes? No, not messages, but deliver of the ball,
the hard working Lynch, ever contributing to the score

The final member of this sextet, this epic forward crew
little Charlie Cameron, the understudy, the livewire
his change of direction and pace leaving many a defender askew

Oh Zeus! Though man for man, this forward line your help it does not need,
we beseech you, give guidance to our midfield's wayward kicks,
lest this heroic, potent forward line be wasted, as unspent seed

Welcome back:
Regular
Outstanding
Redoubtable
Yard gainer

Likely to be
All-Australian
Ignored by Sanderson
Rightfully returned
Dazzling season

Conclusion:
Kicks are still wonky
Turnovers are an ill wind
Maybe next season

A third consecutive flag would obviously be the ultimate for the Hawks, but in saying that there's been plenty of highlights on their 2015 journey so far. From the low of Jarryd Roughead's shock cancer diagnosis, his rapid return to football has been a feel-good story. Ditto for Brendan Whitecross after his long-awaited comeback from his second knee reconstruction. If he can somehow squeeze back into the side and play in a premiership it would top anything this season, although a Brownlow Medal for midfield marvel Sam Mitchell would run close. But perhaps the most uplifting part of the season to date has been Cyril Rioli's stunning turnaround from an injury-plagued 2014. The livewire small forward has reminded everyone of his immense talent with his explosive high-marking and pace, highlighted by a stunning six-goal haul from 12 touches against Geelong in round 20. Long may his previously dodgy hamstrings hold together

SYDNEY SWANS

Video Preview

When club champion Adam Goodes took personal leave during the week before the round 18 clash with Adelaide after constant abuse from opposition fans had finally taken its toll, the Swans united as one. They'd lost three of their past five games and the season looked to have stalled, but with their mate hurting, the club's leaders rallied the side against the Crows. A key figure when the Goodes saga finally boiled over the week before in Perth, Lewis Jetta booted the opening goal of the game, celebrated with his own indigenous dance, and from that moment it was all over. Co-captain Jarrad McVeigh, Dan Hannebery and Josh Kennedy shared 109 touches and five goals in a thumping win, while Lance Franklin, who battled through the pain of a back injury and probably shouldn't have been on the park, kicked three goals. The Swans crowd rose at the seven-minute mark of the third term as a rousing tribute to Goodes and the SCG was filled with banners and shirts in an outpouring of love for the dual Brownlow medallist. It was a brilliant night to witness.

This is an astute writeup on the tactical issues facing each team going into finals, worth a read for more in-depth analysis.

OTHER GOING ONS

The All-Australian Team:
With finals footy firmly knocking on the door, the AFL is beginning to prepare its other annual end-of-season festivities. And among the most important is the naming of the All-Australian side for Season 2015.
The panel of selectors have revealed the initial 40-man squad for the team - a ceremonial side of players selected as the best in their position for the year - with the list to be subsequently whittled down to a final 22-man side closer to the Grand Final.
The Full list can be found here.

Brownlow Medal:
The Brownlow Medal is a pseudo-MVP award that is considered the most prestigious with the AFL. The race for the Brownlow looks set to be a close-run thing with favourite Nat Fyfe missing a number of games in the back half of the season.
Most pundits had all but awarded Fyfe the Brownlow in the middle of the season with an anticipated 10 best-on-ground performances in his pocket after just 13 rounds.
By the end of the regular season, Fyfe would have missed four games which means he will have to defy history to claim the game's most coveted individual award. The only player to have won the Brownlow after missing four matches was St Kilda and Richmond legend Ian Stewart back in 1965.
North Melbourne ruckman Todd Goldstein, Hawthorn midfielder Sam Mitchell, Fremantle onballer David Mundy, reigning Brownlow Medallist Matt Priddis, Port Adelaide captain Travis Boak, and Sydney Coaches hard nut, and coaches MVP Dan Hannebery, look to be the main challengers.

The award ceremony is held on the evening of the Monday prior to the Grand Final.

Grand Final Week:
The AFL seem intent on turning Melbourne into some kind of extra-insane Football Mecca in the week leading up to the Grand Final. The parkland surrounding the MCG will have films, concerts, a parade, all sorts of hokey touristy poo poo that we scorn because it's better to sit in the pub and drink to forget the fact your team is a rabble, you've got one good player and probably won't make finals in the next decade. I'll be making a GDT thread for the Grand Final this year, let's hope it's a classic.

***************************************

Sorry if your team, like mine, sucked hard enough to not make the finals, let's focus on the good footy to come and worry about fixing our bad teams in mid-October.

So apparently Barrett was right about McCarthy leaving GWS.

GWS have released this statement:

quote:

The manager of Cameron McCarthy, Colin Young, has today formally enquired about a trade.

The GIANTS have categorically rejected this request.

McCarthy, 20, kicked 35 goals in 20 games for the GIANTS this season and is contracted until the end of 2017 - See more at: http://www.gwsgiants.com.au/news/2015-09-11/cameron-mccarthy-statement#sthash.I99rvDDw.dpuf

This will get interesting. Freo will be desperate for him and I think GWS will happily hold onto him for a year if they don't get an offer they like.

Frankly the short summary for the club works better than the biased wall of text I would've written if I had time and gave a poo poo.

I wonder if it's about cap space with an eye on targeting free agents? Going to be another massive year of list turnover. Does anyone have the stats to hand of how many players Hardwick changed over his first few years? Roos is at 22 in 2 years, and looking like double figures again.

Its just lovely here this time of year.
It's going to be quite rainy and windy this evening. Surely favours the Melbourne side.

Jesus, 30+ in 3 years?! That's 75% of the list.

Bit surprised about jamar, he's decent for a backup ruck, and if he's willing to play on why not just cut his contract? Lot of teams have been exposed by lack of backup rucks during injury this year

Oh yeah, baby. Frame your suffering as a masterpiece. Only one problem - no one's watching. It's boring, buddy, boring as death.

It was fine and sunny when I went for lunch in Subi but it's already overcast again.

Chance of hail tomorrow, bad luck Dockers.

Hardwick took over at the end of 2009.
Only 8 players who were on the list when he took over. 2 (Foley & Newman) are retiring at the end of this season.

Intrigued seppos should definitely start by watching the finals, they're usually the best games to watch all year outside of contests between cross city rivals.

Also I recommend the Saturday morning game of the Adelaide Crows @ the Western Bulldogs, it should prove to be a thrilling contest between two young, lower seeded teams with powerful attacks, and fast and free styles of play.

Paul roos might not have been the saviour everyone wanted, but if nothing else at least he's given them the confidence to make some tough list management choices

See you say that now, but I'm fully expecting many comparisons of Umpires calls to what you might see at a Dees game.
