So, I have alot of forced downtime at home atm and I have the urge for a longform anime serial. I'd like something which isn't one of the big shonen shows or an isekai, generally has good vibes and isn't too sex weird with its female characters, I'd be open to alot of genres but something that's pretty easy watching and isn't too dense or depressing would be nice. Could anyone make any recommendations, or should try and be more specific?

If you're fine with Shoujo, you might enjoy Precure. It's also a long form serial that has a new cast of characters and different styles and themes each season, so if you aren't feeling one season you can jump to a different season and try that one.

have you watched Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood? I assume you mean "dense" as in plot-heavy, and it's got a lot of story, but I don't think it's TOO heavy.

being more specific to the stuff you like can help people give recommendations, yeah.

I have a whole lot of mandatory TV time scheduled for a long time, big serials are agar I'm looking for.

Also for genres I guess shoujo weighs be interesting? I've never really seen much of the genre over than Sailor Moon and Utena, but adventure or comedy would be fine too. I'll check out Precure once I'm done with The Apothecary Diaries

Fruits basket remake is one of the highest rated anime on MAL and has around 73 episodes. It does get a bit angsty but I remember liking it even as someone whose very much not a teen girl. What you mean by “depressing” or “dense” would also maybe be helpful. Like is it about the animes world view? Is it about what happens to the characters?

Where does your scoring metric stand relative to Azumanga Daioh vs Haibane Renmei?

in terms of which precure season to watch id recommend heartcatch, its got a very distinct style and, while obviously still a show for 5 year olds, it does deal with slightly darker themes than most of the other precure seasons. we're talking like sonic adventure 2 levels of dark themes but.

besides that, if 'big shonen' excludes sports anime haikyuu and hajime no ippo are pretty good. ippo has a bit of horniness over some random female characters but its mostly just the guys having some Boy Talk, i dont really remember anything that bad or prominent, just 'drat that ladys hot' occasionally. like if you can handle dragon ball its below that.

natsumes book of friends is mostly pretty lowkey but its good for relaxing with a couple eps.

while Legend of the Galactic Heroes is indeed one of the best shows ever made, anime or otherwise, I would hesitate to say it's an "easy watch" or not "heavy"

I would like to recommend My Love Story, about a cute shojo protagonist-looking girl and the huge gorilla-shaped guy she starts going out with. it's wonderful, it's not very long but I bet you'll enjoy your time with it.

Thank you all for the recs. Fruits Basket is a really good shout, I watched the first anime adaptation back in the 00s but I think it got one of those fake anime endings because the manga was still going? And I take it I can watch Precure is any order?

yeah, the new fruits basket is a faithful adaptation of the manga, and you can start precure with any season.

I'm once again asking for recommendations of the same type.

I really like realistic sports manga and read mostly that, though I would also accept realistic slice-of-life that tell of some sort of endeavour (so not "just" a slice of life, e.g. Silver Spoon). I also like historical fiction (Golden Kamuy, Vinland Saga) though I'm not really looking for that.

The stuff I like, which might help others looking for a similar style:

Favs:
Real
Ping Pong
Baby Steps
Haikyuu

Liked:
Hajime no ippo
Catenaccio
Days of Diamond
Hikaru no Go
Chihayafuru
Run with the wind
Aoashi
Dogsred

Couldn't really get into Eyeshield 21 or Slam Dunk (though I might have to try another translation for the latter).

Consume:
Aoashi

Akane-banashi fits the "some sort of endeavour" criteria while also having sportslike qualities in that it's about people trying to be the best at something. I had no prior interest in rakugo (just like I had no interest in karuta when reading Chihayafuru), but the manga is so high quality and compelling that I was immersed in no time. It's ongoing on mangaplus and there are a lot of chapters to catch up on.

In a similar vein, is there any wholesome sports manga/anime like Chihayafuru but its about a bunch of kids learning karate? Like an after school karate club? Not some heavy sports manga like baki or whatever, but something similar in tone and positivity like the aforementioned Chihayafuru?

3-Gatsu no Lion / March Comes in Like a Lion isn't 100% focused on the central endeavour of shogi, being more of a broader human drama, but as a human drama about people who dedicate themselves completely to their pursuit I highly recommend it.

Ippon Again which is about a girls judo club and GGWP: Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games.

Edit: Historicals would be Arte, Sing Erina, Brides Tale, Emma, Gisele Alain, Kingdom, Hengoku no Shwester and if you don't mind the settings being fictional and some fantasy elements in some, Prince Freya, Nina the Starry Bride, Yona of the Dawn, Altair: Record of Battles, Magus of the Library, and Taisho Otome Otogibanashi.

Hit up anything by Mitsuri Adachi. Touch is easily his best work (there's a reason why it's a classic!) but he has made a lot of great sports series, and some great stuff that's not sports too.

Seconding anything by Adachi, Touch is great, H2 was a fun baseball one also.

I like a lot of the same stuff as you do, things I've enjoyed not on your list include

Kingdom (Chinese unification built around a few prominent historical figures)
Vagabond (same person that did Real, about Miyamoto Musashi, beautiful)
March Comes in Like a Lion (shogi, good if you liked Chihayafuru)
Nodame Cantabile (professional musicians, but hits the same vibes of Adachi / sports mangas imo)
Medalist (figure skating)
Wondance (dancing)
Ace of the Diamond (highschool baseball)
Days (highschool soccer)
Rookies (hightschool baseball)
Shamo (martial arts, pretty brutal seinen, high highs and low lows of storytelling though, great art)
Giant Killing (pro soccer in Japan)
Blue Period (art / painting, but also kinda hits like a sports manga, you might enjoy)

e: forgot these
Teppu (female MMA fighter, really interesting but ends too soon because of authors health I think)
All-Rounder Meguru (male MMA, very technical discussions on MMA, training etc, pretty fun)

Seconding Mitsuru Adachi, Cross Game is probably the best sports manga I’ve ever read

Thanks for the recs.

I'll retry March Comes in Like a Lion (I watched some of the anime but lost interest, I'll try reading the manga). I read the first chapter of Akane-banashi but it hasn't yet grabbed me, but I'll give it a few chapters.

Show ha showten I've tried before but really did not like it, I think mostly because the "mode" of comedy is so alien to me and nothing strikes me as remotely entertaining so it was actively repulsive.

I avoided Mitsuru Adachi because his stuff looked so "old" (I also have very little interest in baseball), but I'll give one of them another shot. Either Touch or Cross Game I guess.

Both Touch and Cross Game are great but I personally give the edge to Touch because it takes a while before it gets heavily involved with the baseball side of things, to the point where I've successfully recommended it to pals who don't care about the sport. Way I see it is, by the time the main character in Touch actually starts to play baseball it's far enough into the series that presumably most folks who made it that far have enough investment in the cast that they'll wanna continue even if they're not big on baseball.

I mean I already read Days of Diamond so I'm not completely opposed to baseball. If it's just school antics before the baseball I might get bored of that though (the cover makes me think there might be school romance involved which is even worse).
