What are some good (or at least decent) sports anime/manga with pro teams or that are at least not set in high school? I already have a big pile of those to watch but want to mix it up with some shows with characters that are actual adults. I've already watched One Outs and Giant Killing is on my list.

The Devil Tesla posted:Ippo might be what you're looking for, if you haven't already given it a shot. Comedy option: Rowdy Sumo Wrestler Matsutaro. lol I already watched a few episodes of Matsutaro when it aired and it was garbage. I thought Ippo was about a high school guy so it was kinda low on my priority list, isn't the main guy like 16 or something? I may have to move it up the list if the cast is older than I thought.

tbh Ippo was also kinda low on my list because I'd already read All Rounder Meguru and didn't think the comparison would be favorable, but if I stick to the anime that might not be a problem since Meguru doesn't have one and sports stuff is usually more fun when it's in motion.

RabidWeasel posted:Meguru is really loving good though so if you're going to use it as a standard then you're setting yourself up for disappointment. If more sports manga was like Meguru then I would have read an assload of sports manga. Yeah Meguru is fantastic. I wouldn't say I'm holding it up as a standard but more like I just read it recently and being somewhat similar it would be hard to not compare them. I'll put the Ippo anime on the short list (vs the endlessly long eventually list) and probably skip the manga. More team stuff would be good though if it exists; one of the things I like about the sports genre is having a team of dorks being dorks together. I will say Haikyuu!! is kinda my gold standard there but I don't expect everything to live up to it. I grabbed the Giant Killing anime last night BTW, kinda bummed I missed when CR had the rights to it.

Police/detective manga - here are some I'm currently reading or have read: Route End Due to a harsh experience in life, Haruno eventually becomes a cleaning specialist in the field of clearing the remnants of the deceased. After a particular day, Haruno becomes involved in the curious case of 'END'. -ongoing; main character is a civilian working w/police to catch a serial killer Shibatora Officer Shibata Taketora works in a local koban (a small police office). He may have a child-like face on the outside, but he's more serious than anyone in his pursuit of justice! With his goal being to become a detective, Taketora confronts everyday problems that happen within the town! Various incidents within the street make him chase after and apprehend criminals! -a must-read if you like cop manga Switch Etou Kai may look like a squeaky-clean kid, but the Greater Kanto Narcotics Control Division's new investigator hides a violent alter ego and a dangerous past. With his stoic partner Kurabayashi Hal, Kai is assigned to track down and stop the distribution of Dragon Speed, a dangerous new drug. But Ryuugen, the syndicate trafficking the drug, is almost impossible to infiltrate. Add street violence and a jurisdiction war with the Meguro Police into the mix, and it looks like Kai's in for some very long days at the office. -kinda meh; it also has a short anime adaption Himitsu It's the 2060's, and Japan has perfected "The MRI System," a piece of neurotechnology that, when given the brain of a person who died within the past 48 hours, can analyse the visual memories contained within; even being able to give scientists a look into what the deceased saw in their final moments. Needless to say, this is a highly regarded - and greatly feared - method that has been placed under stringent restrictions and is only authorised for use by a special police unit, Section Nine, for the investigation of baffling or high-profile crimes. Aoki Ikkou is a talented newbie who has just been assigned to Section Nine. He initially has qualms about delving into people's most private moments and analysing their darkest fears and fantasies, but as he settles in with his teammates and warms up to his boss, the highly intelligent Maki Tsuyoshi, he becomes more and more competent at his job. Though quick to develop pride in his career, Aoki still struggles to balance his family relationships and love life with his demanding workload, further complicated when he's drawn into the dark past and murky circumstances surrounding the outwardly cool and self-controlled but internally tormented Maki. -sci-fi but limited to the MRI thing; translation is ongoing but VERY slow but 9 volumes out of 12 are complete at least; there's an anime adaption but having watched part of it you're probably better off just reading the manga Border On her first day as a police academy trainee, Haruna is assigned to keep an eye on Ishikawa Ango, a driven and resourceful detective who has recently survived a gunshot wound to the head. What Haruna doesn't know is that the incident has given Ishikawa the ability to see and communicate with spirits of the victims, making him even more determined to use his special ability to catch culprits. -some supernatural elements since the guy sees ghosts but he has to work within the scope of his investigation so it's fairly grounded; ongoing but there's at least one full case translated Seigi Keikan Monju Monju is a prototype of a line of anti-crime police robots, and he was an elite, celebrated member of the force. Now, to his dismay, he's been re-assigned out in the country, working alongside Yamagashi Junpei, a young cop who is mostly concerned with sexy women and his possibly thinning hair. Monju's combat capabilities seem unnecessary for a small town with its small crimes, and the people don't initially welcome him. Monju will have to find his place in this new situation, and win over the people around him with his skill for protecting the innocent. The first major case he must solve is catching an underwear thief, who Monju suspects might actually be the perverted Junpei. Will the two of them be able to catch the thief and clear Junpei's name? -translation of this just picked up on this one after being abandoned so there are only 3 chapters but it's fantastic so far Really looking forward to more of this. I'll also mention Devil's Line which is a pretty cool vampire manga; the lead is in a special police squad that investigates vampire crimes. It's licensed and something like 8 or 9 volumes are already out and it has an anime coming out at some point. I have a bigger list but the rest are all BL titles

I didn't watch the show but I read a large chunk of what was translated of the manga right before it aired and it skeeved me out to the point that I refuse to support anything related to it. I was actually reading it initially because I'd kinda written the whole thing off as being too gross and wanted to make sure I wasn't judging it too harshly so I went in trying to give it a fair shake and was completely blindsided by the pervasive creepiness. (everything by Urasawa is obviously great) I already made a post with some so I'll drag it back out/update it a bit: quote:Route End To that I'll also add Summer of the Ubume which is a stand-alone murder mystery adaption of the novel of the same name. There is a whole series of these based on the novels; the second manga is still being translated (slowly) and also has an anime adaption that I can't really give opinions on since I haven't gotten around to watching it (but is probably better than waiting on the manga to be translated lol), and the third one is being worked on by the same group that finished the first one (e: just noticed they finished it!!). There's also a spinoff that is a little lighter, it's incomplete but finishes up a whole case so you aren't left hanging. Everything Burrito fucked around with this message at 04:45 on Feb 17, 2018 |

There is a lot more around it than just that but you might like the character of Randel Oland in Pumpkin Scissors, the anime is not spectacular but I do recommend watching at least the first fight it opens with and then reading the manga if you're interested in continuing at all. The whole team is really in over their heads and up against some overwhelming forces but they tend to be more about politics and corruption but Randel's fights boil that down to a much simpler man vs tank (or armored train, etc) spectacle.

the All Out manga (not sure about the anime since I haven't gotten around to watching it) spent some time on rugby rules and positions so you'd have some idea of what the heck everyone was doing which was nice since I have no clue how rugby works. The manga 15: Meisetsu Kougyou Koukou Rugby Bu also did that, with helpful charts of player positions!

Giant Killing was a good show despite not being that great looking; there just aren't many team sport shows that are both fairly realistic and feature an adult team either. I tried to switch over and continue with the manga but couldn't get into it as much although I've bookmarked my spot and haven't given up on it entirely
