Sakura Quest inviting comparisons to Shirobako kind of sets it up for disappointment because Shirobako is a show where 100% of the people watching it are already personally invested in its subject whereas Sakura Quest is close to the opposite so it has way more work to do

but the actual best PA Works is Eccentric Family if you haven't seen that

land of the lustrous, girls last tour, and princess principal are all good though i think they're not technically exclusive anymore in that hidive also has them now

dororo and vinland saga are both alright if you like bleak historical setting action/adventure stuff

Tales of Woe
Dec 18, 2004

yeah the second season of the anime is a lot slower and more mystery/thriller than horror

Tales of Woe
Dec 18, 2004

there's plenty of good light novel anime, even if that one is not

Tales of Woe
Dec 18, 2004

definitely try Mob Psycho 100 if you haven't seen it and like one punch man, it's the other series from the same artist and has similarly cool animation but also a stronger emotional core to it.

spice and wolf is kinda unique topically but Katanagatari is another historical adventure series with heavy banter between the leads

i think a lot of crunchyroll's back catalog is available free (with ads but my adblocker seems to catch them) without a subscription, they default the player to standard def to make it look like you have to pay to get HD, but you can tick it up to 1080p anyway, it won't stop you.

i've never heard of anyone getting dmca'd for niche anime but i will risk being the first

In This Corner of the World is an adaptation of a woman mangaka's work, though the film is directed by a guy

Tales of Woe
Dec 18, 2004

yeah they revived it for a second run like 5 years ago. it's still good

Tales of Woe
Dec 18, 2004

seconding A Place Further Than the Universe, i know everyone recommends it to people who missed the last few years but it really is an all-timer and it fits your description well

if you like Utena and Penguindrum, Sarazanmai is ikuhara's newest show and i thought it was good

Tales of Woe
Dec 18, 2004

i don't see how nichibros is much different, they're both sketch comedies without an overall plot which doesn't seem like what they're looking for

hyouka has the best school festival arc in anime and there are like hundreds of those

Recommend to me your #1 absolute favorite anime ever, with no context, description, or limitations. Series, OVA, whatever, lets hear it, but limit it to one please!

i watched that recently and it's fun but i don't know if i'd call it shaft-y despite being shinbo, it's from before he developed most of the visual quirks that i associate with shaft

dennou coil

turn a gundam

i really liked shiki's finale but that one's probably more ymmv than most

Would yall have any recc's for something like Mushishi? Like chill mystery stuff.

Natsume Yuujinchou is a very similar series of episodic youkai stories, it's a little lighter in tone and modern rather than historical but about equally good

Tales of Woe
Dec 18, 2004

that mostly sounds like you're describing gundam though i haven't seen any of the recent gundams so i don't know which ones best fit that

Tales of Woe
Dec 18, 2004

that doesn't sound like the same show i watched

Tales of Woe

just don't be one of the unfortunate souls who deny themselves Turn A Gundam just because it's technically the 'last' one, and then burn out on the bad ones before they get there

Tales of Woe

i'll second Baccano

The Eccentric Family fits the criteria if it doesn't have to be an action series

I enjoy anime the most when it's completely absurd in premise and/or execution: FLCL, Girls und Panzer, Cells at Work!, Panty & Stocking, etc. What are some good, light in tone (or at least obviously comically over the top with dark humor) animes that would fit my clearly discerning pallet?

I'm asking you guys because I don't know poo poo about anime. Case in point, I picked up Madoka Magica at one point because it looked like a cute but somber magical girl anime, and welp

humanity has declined

I asked a very similar question last page so if you want even more recommendations go look up the ones they gave me as well (there is some overlap).

Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions has shown up twice now under the "People also watched:" list for some of the shows you guys recommended. Is it any good?

i like it but i can't think of anything mentioned in here recently that it's similar to, its probably just showing up because it's popular? or maybe if you were watching other kyoani shows

it's a cringe comedy romcom. it's by kyoani so the animation is super good. season 1 is good, season 2 less so.

Hey everyone. I asked a friend about lighthearted slice-of-life stuff and he suggested K-On and Gakkou Gurashi. I've just finished the latter (Really enjoyed it even though it was a hilarious bait-and-switch on my friend's part) and I've just started to watch the former. Anyways, I've realized I really like this genre, where the focus is put on the interaction between the main cast. As someone whose experience with anime has always been stuff like Gundam, Yugioh or Inuyasha, it's been very fun to see storylines where there's basically no fighting (or at least, it's not central to the plot). Any recommendations?

Non Non Biyori is my personal favorite. really prettily directed pastoral comedy

Tales of Woe

Planet With is a super robot show so not hard sci-fi but it's very good

there's been a couple other-genre-but-in-sci-fi-setting shows in Megalobox (boxing) and Carole & Tuesday (music)

can't think of anything else in that small time range that doesn't break one of the criteria

i watched that recently and was underwhelmed, maybe because i couldn't help but compare it to bofuri which was more fun and didn't get bogged down with contrived stakes. or maybe because i'm burnt out on the whole battle royale tactical shooter thing. it definitely seems to have had some luck coming out when that stuff was still on the upswing, timing-wise it seems like it would have already had to be in production when PUBG blew up despite practically being an anime about that game

Tales of Woe
Dec 18, 2004

it's very good, one of my favs. doesn't have much action though if that's what you're looking for, more of a slow and atmospheric series

Tales of Woe

s1 has one particularly uncomfortable torture-porn-y scene and outside of that its just a lot of little TMI-ish bits that add up. havent seen the movie or read the manga so i dunno if it escalates

these ones feel most out of place on what's otherwise a list of really popular and/or critically acclaimed shows. prison school kinda owns though i guess.

also agree with watching Gurren Lagann instead of or ahead of Kill la Kill, its easily the better show by that crew

Tales of Woe

Tales of Woe

I'd like to find some shows that are fantasy, action, lots of flashing lights and fights, not too heavy/thriller/horror/psychological. Basically a JRPG in Anime form. I'd also like to avoid filler wherever possible, but I realise asking for no filler in a genre like fantasy action is probably a bit much.

Also ideally the main character is good at what they do and not struggling every time something pops up.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood would be the big one, if you haven't seen it already

Chaika the Coffin Princess is pretty good and extremely jrpg-ish
