Chapter One: Big Brother

Location: Camp Aleph Green

The rain has fallen for at least a week now, turning the cracked concrete of the place once known as the city of New Detroit into a virtual lake, the water failing to drain as the storm outlets have been blocked with ashes and bones of the unfortunates who tried to resist the Coalition or were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Coalition soldiers pay it no mind, strange insects perch on their shoulders which tap the stolen Fire to bend water away from them. The creatures have a fondness for human meat, as the insects are frequently also seen scavenging the corpse pile at the far end of the place now known Camp Aleph Green.

Most of the buildings have been destroyed, shelled into rubble in the initial attack, and the Coalition's own geodesic structures have sprung up atop the ruins and in parking lots. No such luxury for the conquered, however, they are forced to wander the wreckage of a once great city seeking what shelter they can. Each prisoner has been fitted with a tracking collar, rigged to explode at the Coalition's whim or if they wander out of the designated safe zones and into restricted areas.

Periodically, a patrol of Coalition soldiers will come by with their short range atmospheric craft which resembled flying saucers, if flying saucers were jet black and belched flame from a central aperture as they flew jerkily through the sky. At times, the craft will land and a few dozen humans would be force marched into the craft, and from there to the Harvesters, where they would eventually join the corpse pile.

The soldiers are the most common type of Coalition alien, which the last vestiges of terrestrial media, before it went silent, dubbed the Reds. Reds were a bit smaller than the average human but much more muscled, each one looking like a body builder with the head of a carnivorous dinosaur. In addition to the Reds, the second most commonly seen alien were the Whites, who were menials, large slow and heavy bipeds covered head to toe in white fur, concealing any features they might have. Whites ranged in size from barely bigger than a man to the size of houses. Unlike the other Coalition aliens, Whites showed no signs of intelligence or initiative, merely performing rote tasks from dawn until dusk, then stopping in place and seemingly sleeping standing up until the next sunrise.

Aside from these basic security measures, the humans in Camp Aleph Green were left to their own devices. They merely had to avoid the Reds in their saucer patrols and guard posts, and could scrounge for food or hope that the Whites had left supplies where they could reach them.

As night falls the D'Aubney Twins, Ernie and Evie take shelter beneath the remains of a car wash along with a few other refugees. Their collar lights glow the uncomfortable red that indicate they're still in the safe zone (they begin flashing white if the wearer approaches a restricted area). Nearby, young Lilly Greene plays with a small bit of fire idly as she considers risking a larger fire to warm up. The Reds could see heat, but the rain would mask anything short of an actual fire. Sadly, no one in the small group had had any luck finding food today and hunger was beginning to take its toll.

Location: Forests of Michigan, outside Camp Aleph Green

Caught in a routine patrol of the forests outside Detroit, Julian "Le Geai" Babineaux and Anna "Frantic" Gibson find themselves restrained together by a kind of sticky webbing that has globbed up both of their hands and arms. The Reds carry their confiscated weapons easily, familiar with these human tools that were no match for their Champion, who walks at the head of the column, letting out the wheezing hiss that passes for laughter amongst the Coalition Reds.

Kevin "Shift" Thomas watched the two prisoners from his perch in a nearby tree. The patrol was only ten Reds, the local resistance team he'd teamed up with, the Spiders, outnumbered them three to one, but the Reds had a Champion, and he could feel the power radiating off of the larger Red, the stolen Fire of Creation had made him bigger and probably stronger and tougher than the other Reds, who could already take him in a fistfight if he didn't have the element of surprise. Fortunately, the Spiders had their fast climbing harnesses that let them practically fly through the trees so they had a better than even chance of freeing the prisoners and getting away clean. One of the nearby Spiders handed him a combat knife and a pistol. "Go on your mark." She whispered.

Heyo, your friendly GM here. Remember to include your character sheet in your first post in Pre tags, and any OOC stuff you need to include in a post should be done in italics at the bottom. It also helps people reading if you put your character's name at the start of your post in Bold. Have fun!

Also forgot one thing. Please add this to your sheets

...how does that work?
Fuel

"It will work drat it, just listen!"

Being caught and stuck in a camp was bad enough. But it also had to be in America, which made it all the more worse. Add on top of it starving for a few days, Evie never let herself eat what little food they had come across before everybody else had had their 'fill'. Nobody ever had their fill, so Evie ended up going without more often than not. Only when Ernie forced her to take something had she actually stopped to eat. It wasn't the healthiest way to live, but if it kept the few others in their group going she was glad to do it

All that was reason enough to be on edge. But for Evie it was not having been able to find a fag in can't-even-remember-how-long that had really tipped the scales. She was downright irritable. Right now, she was up in the face of the blonde haired girl playing with a spark of fire in her hands.

"It's simple. I can see your powers, yeah? You can heal yourself. So. You trigger your collar and get your head blown off, I keep your healing power going, you grow your head back. Sans collar. It'll bloody work!"

Complications:

1. Motivation (Responsibility): Evie is the scion of the D’Aubigny clan, holding on
her shoulders the hopes and expectations of her family. From matriarch, grandmother
Audrey, down she is held up as the latest example in a notable line of those willing to
give their all to benefit the United Kingdom and her subjects. Believing she has to live
up to it or not, it has instilled in her a deep sense of responsibility. She didn't have
her powers until later in life, but she still had a duty to try and help others.

2. Relationship (Brother): Ernest developed powers while still young, and while
that in of itself was nothing too troubling in this day and age the nature of his powers
were. He could block other powers, immediately ostracising him from other people
with powers. Combined with his failing to live up to the D’Aubigny name, this left him
with precious few people he could rely one. Evie was one of them, never able to sit by
while her brother was left to struggle.

Lipstick Apathy
Ernie

Upon hearing his sister suggest an idea like this--out of the box even for her--Ernie realizes exactly how malnourished his sister was. "Sis," Ernie begins, "even if it does work. Which, well...It's still the problem of, they'll probably know when, what's it called, the necklace blows up, and want to come investigate. Or at least want to come over here to soak up the Fire. So when they see what's happening, won't they shoot her, or, since they can't hurt her, blow up our heads in retaliation?"

Ernie was doing his best to keep his own spirits up, but laying prone under a bombed out van in a bombed out car wash in the most cold concrete scenario imaginable wasn't helping. Doing something allowed him to turn his focus outwards and not think about how dire their situation--earth's situation--was. There was also the fact that Evie's experiment wasn't something he wanted to be a part of or see. He wanted, no, needed, to feel like he was doing something to improve their situation.

Ernie had spent a fair amount of time hanging around a car wash, and he knew how varied the products in the attached convenience stores could get. He knew that often they had detailing units attached that had most of the tools you'd find in a mechanics shop. It was unlikely they'd find food that was unspoiled, but, "Instead of doing that, why don't we look and see if there's anything laying around we could use. The convenience store might have cigarettes," he says in the sweet tone he always used when he tried to convince Evie to do something she might not be crazy about, "or something useful." He adds sarcastically. "Medicine, batteries, a map? Something we could trade for food. But then we'd have to find someone to trade with."

"If Lilly helped us with light while we all looked, I bet we'd find something." Ernie didn't want to get anyone's hopes up too high, but he was pretty sure that if he could find the parts and a couple tools, he might be able to get one of these cars running given enough time. For how long? Who knows. To do what exactly? Who knows. But those were questions for after the ignition turned over.

Not rolling anything yet. Ernie's goal is to get the three of them working together so that Lilly can light various areas while they look Evie can bump up their ranks with teamwork and they have a better chance of not missing anything.

Freedom - Since he's been in the camps, Ernie's decided he's going to secure Earth's freedom or die trying.

Family - Without Evie, Ernie wouldn't have made it to 20.
Ernie will 100% put Evie's well-being over any mission, person, or situation short of a binary

Looking at the two prisoners he knew that once they had collars on, they couldn't fight back, the champion looked tough, he would have to distract it. The Spiders were a solid team, but not exactly up to taking on a champion, they would do best, confusing and assisting in the escape. Shift looked at the woman in front of him, taking the knife and swirling around in his hands, until he held it like a retracted claw, his other hand taking the pistol and with a soft click, cocking the hammer back softly. "Let me draw them in, and then take them down" He whispered back.

Wordlessly, there is a crack as Shift disappears from in front of the woman and appears behind a tree in a flash, and with careful aim at the champion, Shift, opened fire at the Champion with his pistol signalling the Spiders to attack. They were to get the prisoners free first while Shift sowed the seeds of confusion and chaos among them. The champion however was going to be his primary focus.

Le Geai

Even with his arms webbed together, Julian did his best to appear at ease. Which he mostly was. He settled into a casual stroll and a whistled a pleasant tune. Birdsong was always pleasant. Even when the words weren’t.

<Thanks a loving lot,> he whistled. <I guess nobody loving noticed these shitheads coming?>

The tree swallows overhead ruffled their feathers with as much indignation as their tiny five inch bodies could muster.

<That’s not fair!> chirped one. <We tried to warn you!>

<That’s true. We tried our best.> chimed in a second.

<But you wouldn’t respond. You just sat there.> said a third.

<Yeah! You just sat there!>

The trees erupted in song. Beautiful, lovely melodies to everyone but Julian who could only hear a bunch of dumb birds agreeing with each other over and over and over again. Talking to a flock got real irritating real fast. And he was already irritated at having been captured. He felt stupid going into a trance without checking the area first. It was just that this section of the woods was normally pretty safe. How long had he been peering into the past anyway?

Whatever. It didn’t matter now. He looked down at his hands and began working his fingers. Wiggling them back and forth. Back and forth. The webbing was tight but he didn’t need much more room. Just enough to hold his rifle and to pull the trigger. As soon as he could get a little bit of space he’d make his move. Honestly, he would have disappeared earlier if it wasn’t for the girl. He didn’t have it in him to just leave her at the hands of the Coalition.

<Hey> Julian said, formulating a plan. <I could use some help here in a minute. I don’t want you to do anything dangerous but if, on my signal, you guys could just fly right at these fucker’s faces that’d be awesome. I don’t need a lot. Nothing risky. Just a little distraction.>

The birds were quiet for a moment. Then there was some soft cooing that constituted whispering in birdsong.

<When?> one asked, hopping onto a nearby branch.

<In a minute.>

<When, though? Like now?>

<No. Now right this second. I need to get my hands ready. I’ll give you a signal.>

<You want us to go now?>

<No. What did I just say? I’ll give you a signal.>

<So when? Now?>

<Goddamnit! No! Not now! Wait for a signal! poo poo. Goddamn. >

Julian grit his teeth. Flocks could be absolutely infuriating. They hadn’t even agreed yet. Very unreliable, swallows were. What he wouldn’t give for a good bird of prey right about then. Or a bunch of magpies. Hell, he’d take a woodpecker.

<I’ve been thinking,> one swallow said, <they did move pretty fast. We didn’t have a lot of time to warn you. Still sorry about that, though. Our bad.>

Julian just shook his head and worked on wiggling his fingers.

<I mean they were almost as fast as all these people sitting up here in the trees with us.>

Julian looked up.

<I’m sorry,> he whistled slowly. <What was that?>

I can't believe this poo poo. A routine patrol they said to ease me into things and then I'm partnered with an idiot. Oh he seemed ok at first. He hefted that oversized rifle of his like he knew how to use it but no sooner are we out in the woods is he walking around in a daze listening to the birds sing. Waste of good food if you ask me just letting it sit there and sing but who am I to argue? I'm still kicking myself for not seeing the aliens coming they jumped us from ambush before we even had a chance to react. I could have run for it but that would have meant leaving him for the aliens and I'm not about to abandon my partner even if he is an idiot.

I mean look at him whistling away like that in the middle of all this poo poo. I'm sure he's not right in the head. It'd be child's play for me to slip out of this webbing. But then it would be me in the midst of a pack of aliens on my own. Now if I had my gun back it wouldn't be a problem. I'd laugh at those odds and even be able to run rings around that champion bastard up front. But there's no way I'd be able to wrestle the gun off them and turn it on them not without some sort of distraction anyway.

Lilly Green, Salamander of Val

How dare they address the avatar of the Fire of Creation so casually...

Sighing, I reminded myself that now is not the time for such things. That will have to come later, once I'm out of this drat camp.

Feeling really bad, actually. My body temperature is low enough to be a problem. But first, we got to get some food. For that woman, specifically. What was her name again? Did they even tell her? Or did she just forget? Lilly never cared all that much about memorizing names.

Doesn't matter. This woman clearly is going mad from starvation. At least her brother is here to knock some sense into her... Fine. I'll be their light in these dark times.

Wait, what if her idea actually works?... No, I must be going mad from starvation as well. Bloody hell...

"Fine." she replied to the man, choosing to ignore the woman entirely.

"That's why you'll mask our paranormal energy signature the whole time, Ernie." Evie responds in a tone all to familiar to her brother, the one that sounds like she talking down to a particularly well dressed monkey. "The Fire just dissipates naturally anyway, they don't have to hoover it up and they don't care about the bodies." Which was evidenced by just how many of them were piled up around the camp. "I'm telling you, it will work!"

But between her brother being rather insistent on looking over the car wash just to make sure it was already picked clean by scavengers and the blonde girl not even looking at her, it was clear she couldn't make them see reason. "…fine." Evie sighs, stepping away to give the girl some of her personal space back. "I doubt anything useful will be left here. But I suppose if anywhere ever had cigarettes it'd be a dump like this."

At the car wash, whoah oh oh...

The three group together and start rummaging through the damaged store. Most of the food is already gone or ruined, but Evie manages to locate a bag containing some extremely dry jerky and some stale menthol cigarettes. A few old printed maps, now partially out of date, litter the floor. Unfortunately little else of use can be found, even the motor oil bottles are empty.

Shift needs to adjust some points because I wasn't doing proper checks

Shift pops in front of the patrol and raises his pistol. The Champion laughs as he takes aim and raises its own weapon, a pulsing weapon that fires stunning electric bolts or burning fire blasts. From long experience Shift notes that the Champion has set the weapon to 'stun' as he opens fire, unfortunately, the bullet strikes the Champion in the upper arm, where it harmlessly ricochets off the creature's rock hard powered skin.

The alien returns fire, sending a bolt of electricity into Shift, leaving him twitching against the tree as the energy courses through his veins painfully.

The other aliens have no time to capture Shift however, as the Spiders leap from the trees and silently fall onto the other Reds, knives flashing in the night as they strike the unsuspecting and distracted aliens. Green blood burbles from the throats of the Reds as they breathe their last.

Next to Frantic and Le Geal a pair of Spiders land with a strange canister, spraying something that bubbles as it comes into contact with the webbing, causing it to foam and dissolve away. The other Spider scoops up the fallen guns of the two captives and hand them over. "You up for round two or should we run?" He asks, jerking a thumb at the Champion, who turns to face the Spiders.

"…jumped up little poo poo…" Evie mutters under her breath, as the room lights up and she starts to rummage around. Between her trained eye as a scientist and years of scrounging around to survive, she was about as good as anyone could be at this sort of thing.

And it pays off.

"Looks like you were right. Food." She tells Ernie and Blondie. Shoving her hand into the bag, she takes the half-empty box of cigarettes and hands the rest of the bag off to Ernie. "Probably somebody else's stash. Probably dead by now." She surmises, tapping out one of the menthols. "Eat some of it and give the rest of it out to the others." She tells her brother. Reaching over she grabs Blondie's hand, using her burning finger as a lighter for her cigarette. As it doesn't just instantly burn up upon lighting, Evie takes a nice long drag. "Cheers, Blondie." She has the courtesy to not blow smoke right into her face, at least.

"We've got some maps here, too." She notes, unfolding one and giving it a quick look over. "Pretty old, not sure how useful they'll be."

Julian waited patiently as the Squirrels freed his hands. He looked over at Frantic and gave a calm little shrug. As if to ‘And you were worried?’ The swallows, of course, had already taken off. They took flight as soon as the attack started. Not terribly surprising. They were jumpy little birds. Flocks always were. He made a mental note to leave out some seed for them anyway.

After all, they had tried their best.

Merci beaucoup,” Julian said, receiving his rifle.

He pantomimed ringing a boxing bell and gave a little "Ding Ding" to signify the beginning of round two. Then, with a wink and a playful grin, he disappeared. Invisible, Julian eyeballed the Champion's armor. It'd be tight i he could find a deficiency or a weakness. Something with which he might exploit with a bullet. If not- there was always center mass, two knee caps, and a head. He inhaled slowly.

I'm using two advantages here: assessment as a free action and improved aim with my standard.

Jerking against the tree hadn't been Shift's plan, but the electricity had stunned him, thankfully they had moved close enough to actually be ambushed by the Spiders. Slowly trying to regain sensation, Shift swore that next time he would try to attack from better cover, or at least from above. If he was captured there wasn't going to be a way for him to save more people. It was that grim determination that Shift focused on and started to drill into his head to keep on target. Leaning against the trunk it afforded at least a little cover as the rest of the Spiders rained down from the tops of the trees to get the prisoners.

"Get- them- out- of- here." He said through gritting teeth.

Ernie takes a handful of beef jerky, definitely more than his share, but not such an egregious amount that people would call him on it, hands the bag to Lilly, then presses half of that into Evie's hand. "Keep eating," He says with a firmness not often present in his voice, "You're gonna have some interesting breath..."

He crouches down next to his sister, and helps her spread the map out on the floor. "The maps might tell us something we didn't know, since we don't know a lot of stuff right now." He looks over to Lilly, "Hey, zippo, want to bring that light over here? Help us see what, uh, there is to see on this map?"

A second after the cigarette was removed from the flame emerging from her fire, said flame flares up to be nearly three times the size for a second.

Damnit, to slow. The insolence of this woman is astounding. I should just roast her... ugh. "You wanna burn..." I mutters under my breath.

Using the flame, I heat up a bit of the jerky, before eating it. Man, this tastes disgusting. I want Grandma's cooking back...

All this rain is the first decent shower any of use have had for months." She further responds, knocking the ash from her cigarette onto the floor. She was sure the owners wouldn't mine. "Besides, I don't like it any more than you do. I hate menthols."

"Careful!" Evie scolds as her cigarette lighter jumps up into a right proper flame. "If you can't control your power then don't go waving it about everywhere, Blondie." Orienteering is something they teach Girl Scouts too, right?

Fuel goes over the map looking for points of interest. It doesn't take her long to locate the car wash itself on the map as someone had helpfully printed the address onto the top of the map. She quickly locates a nearby gun store (almost certainly looted or destroyed) a supermarket (same) and something else that catches her eye. "John Carter's Bookstore" is only about two blocks away and if her memory is correct there should be a decommissioned MERLIN outpost in the basement. If she can reactivate it, they have a fighting chance of getting these deadly collars off, step one in making an escape.

Go for the eyes!

Le Geai eyeballs a Champion, this one is fairly standard as far as Champions go, the Reds prefer to enhance their own natural abilities over giving themselves new ones, no real imagination at all. As such, the monster is strong enough to knock the woodsman unconscious with one, maybe two hits, and the alien's hide is tough enough to stop most arms fire cold, if there's one thing he's learned over the years though, is that eyes are never as tough as the rest of the beast that sees with them. The Red skull is almost birdlike in that respect, the eye sockets were thin, and super powered or not, a good bullet through one should ruin its day at the least.

Frantic, in her rush for revenge upon her captors, almost opens fire on her rescuers before realizing that the patrol is dead save for their hateful leader. At the last second she manages to whip her pistol in its general direction and empty the clip, the bullets spanging harmlessly off its arms and legs.

"Okay, let's look at this then." Evie moves the cigarette to the side of her mouth and starts to pour over over the map. "Hmmm." A careful but quick eye goes over every major landmark in the area, looking to find exactly where they were in relation to the city. "Okay, so we are here." She points down, matching the address up top with the street. "Not a lot of help there." She editorialises, starting from there to really take a look at what was surrounding them. "Destroyed. Destroyed. Definitely looted. Probably looted. Is now a pile of rubble…" Evie doesn't even bother pointing out the various locations that might have been useful a few years ago. "Pawn shop. Homewares. White goods. Florist. Bookstore…"

"You only know Prometheus because I made you read my dissertation." Evie notes in an aside to her dearest brother.

But then it's back to their reluctant third wheel. Evie sighs, momentarily haunting the quick step towards their hopeful salvation and walking back over to Blondie.
